The govt. has gone back from its promise to convert our institute into an IIT, as per the recent media reports. On March 28, 2008 a cabinet meeting chaired by our Prime Minister, decided to establish 8 new IITs in the country, and also decided to convert IT-BHU into an IIT.
Now as per news media, the govt. has dropped the plan to convert our institute to an IIT. Our alumni volunteers who regularly contacts HRD ministry were also informed by the ministry sources that the conversion will not happen this time, not at least in this year and don't know whether it will happen or when it will happen. No clear explanation is available from the govt. about the reason for this about turn.
We have been given false promises in the past 5 years by the government; including promise of IIT status, then IIEST status, again IIT status and finally nothing.
In the next parliament session (Feb 12-26, 2008), govt. plans to amend the IIT, Act to include 8 new IITs; but as per media reports, our college will not be included.
With no other alternatives to support their issue, students and faculty of our institute have carried out series of protests and demonstrations, and other forms of protests are also being planned. We appreciate the initiative taken by our students and faculty to start spontaneous actions to press for this burning issue of getting an IIT status for our institute.
A coordination committee has been formed to plan, coordinate and publish the activities of the current students' agitation. It has following alumni and students members:
- Yogesh Upadhyaya (Chemical 1977)
- Vish Narayanan ((Electrical 1983)
- Arvind Gupta (Electronics 1992)
- Anshuman Singh (Electrical 1998)
- Animesh Pathak (CSE 2003)
- Praharsh Sharma (3rd yr Electronics)
- Devender Maun (2nd yr Ceramic)
We will continue our protests till we get public announcement from HRD minister that our institute will be converted into an IIT or till the IIT Act is amended by the Parliament to include our institute in the list of IITs.
Our protests shall always remain peaceful and students will not boycott the classes or will not block the movement on the roads. The protests can be in form of wearing black-ribbons or black T-shirts, posters/banners, carrying out peaceful rally within and outside campus, hunger strike, etc. The actions will include meeting our VC and political leaders, submitting petition, appraising media of latest developments, etc.
We need help and cooperation from our IT-BHU community, including all students, faculty and alumni to make our struggle a success.

CHARU SUDAN KASTURI
New Delhi, Feb. 3: The Centre plans to shelve the promised upgrade of Banaras Hindu University's engineering school to an Indian Institute of Technology, citing opposition from the IITs' top decision-making body.
The upgrade was opposed last week at a meeting of the IIT Council by R. Chidambaram, member of the Prime Minister's Scientific Advisory Committee, government officials have said.
Now, the human resource development ministry plans to cite the opposition to freeze the transformation of one of India's best and oldest engineering schools into an IIT.
The ministry had prepared a note seeking the expenditure finance committee's clearance for the upgrade but is now likely to argue that the plan be kept in abeyance, a top ministry official said.
The committee's clearance is a precursor to seeking the mandatory approval from the cabinet. The ministry, the official added, has no plans of approaching the cabinet.
The Institute of Technology, BHU (IT-BHU), has admitted students based on the IIT Joint Entrance Examination since 1971 and is widely regarded as the best government engineering college after the IITs. But at the council meeting, sources said Chidambaram argued the government was opening too many IITs together -- six were started in 2008 and two more are planned in 2009.
Chidambaram also argued that IT-BHU was a crucial component of the varsity, the sources said. Separating it would hurt the university, he said.
A decision to backtrack from the promised upgrade is, however, unlikely to please Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayavati, now opposed to the ruling UPA. Mayavati is learnt to have written at least once to HRD minister Arjun Singh voicing concerns over the delay in the upgrade.
Early in 2008, first the Prime Minister and then Arjun had announced the government was starting eight new IITs besides converting the IT-BHU into an IIT. But in July last year, when the cabinet cleared starting eight new IITs, it did not take a decision on IT-BHU.
Today, a senior IT-BHU administrator questioned the opposition to the upgrade. Officially, BHU has not opposed the separation of IT-BHU, required for the conversion, he said.
Thanks for the update Yogesh. Please do let us know how we can help contribute to the cause. Since many of us are overseas, we may not be able to help with logistics in India, but we can support the agitation financially. A big thank you to all the members of the coordination committee. Lets go for the kill and give it our best possible shot - we owe it to our institute.

February 11, 2009 7:02 AMbreaking news !!!!!!!!!
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090215/jsp/nation/story_10537919.jsp
The Aligarh Muslim University has demanded an IIT tag for its engineering wing, thrusting on the government a political dilemma at a time it has shelved the promise of an IIT to another university.
The human resource development ministry is evaluating a proposal submitted earlier this month to upgrade the Aligarh university’s Zakir Hussein College of Engineering and Technology to an IIT, The Telegraph has learnt.
Junior HRD minister M.A.A. Fatmi, it is learnt, is keen that the university’s demand be met and ministry officials are to discuss its merits on Monday, government sources said.
Just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls where the UPA is counting heavily on minority support, few in the government want to upset the AMU, its students or those backing the demand, the sources said.
But the AMU demand has come within days of the IIT Council striking down a government promise to upgrade the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), to an IIT.
The IIT Council is the highest executive body of the tech schools and the HRD ministry has decided to adhere to its view on the IT-BHU upgrade, leading to protests on the campus.
“In such a scenario, granting the AMU college IIT status, when it was not even on our radar, will be hard to explain to the BHU and its students,” a top HRD ministry official said.
But AMU vice-chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis said: “We believe the Zakir Hussein College deserves autonomy from the university and IIT status in particular. If the government can promise the IT-BHU the status of an IIT, we believe the ZHCET can also qualify.”
I am deeply hurt by this break of promise by the government of India. If any institution has right to become IIT at the first place, then it is IT-BHU only. Since 1971 it admits student through JEE and produce one of the best engineers to serve the country. The faculty and staff of IT-BHU are among the best in the country and many of them are world renowned. Many of its students have earned respect for the country by their work in the top international universities and institutions. Though IT-BHU has a strong reputation abroad, global brand IIT will give it leverage in the field of financial and technical collaboration with top universities abroad and this will help India. If we have to compete with China and many other fast developing nations, then first we have to strengthen our universities and bring fairness in the education system. It will be a joke that ITI - Patna will become IIT while IT-BHU will be kept away. IIT will loose its brand value if a prime institution like IT-BHU is excluded and many small institutions are made IIT. Things will never change in India unless political people stop doing politics in education field. In the western world fairness is the key in their development, while in India politically motivated decisions always hampers the fair process. Government should stop going back and forth on their promise and take the right decision of making it IIT Varanasi. Making it IIT will be more beneficial in the long term perspective for Indian government also.
Giving it IIT status will be true justice to the fair education system in India and people will have faith in the government.
I hope some learned and far sighted people in the government will think again and will approve the IT-BHU to IIT Varanasi conversion.

Rahul Gandhi assures BHU-IT students of early IIT status
Varanasi, Feb 19: The Congress General Secretary and MP Rahul Gandhi has assured the Institute of Technology- Banaras Hindu University students that their demand of IIT status for IT-BHU will be fulfilled very soon.
The students of the Institute who returned here after meeting him at New Delhi on Wednesday told media that Gandhi heard them patiently and assured that he will try his best to get the bill granting IIT status to the Institute placed before the parliament in the present session itself, however he added that it was a little too late this time.
Gaurav, a student who met Gandhi claimed that he was already aware of the issue and promised to get the bill through the parliament or get the status through even a government notification if the passage of the bill was not possible in the present brief session.
Chetan, another student of the delegation said, "We have met several top bureaucrats, ministers and politicians at New Delhi to achieve our goal and we are hopeful that now the issue could not be at least shelved."
The students and teachers who visited the capital said that the IIT amendment Act is pending in the Law Ministry for certain clarifications and as soon as it gets law ministry's clearance it may get the government's final nod.
Meanwhile the Director of the IT-BHU, Prof S N Upadhyay said that the delay in granting IIT status to the Institute is making the students restless.

BHU blow to IIT plan
OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
New Delhi, Feb. 27: Banaras Hindu University’s executive council has refused to part with the engineering wing, dealing a blow to the Centre’s plans to grant it IIT status.
The council has sent the HRD ministry a resolution rejecting the proposed separation of the Institute of Technology from the BHU, necessary for IIT status. The resolution comes less than a week after the BHU vice-chancellor had assured the Centre the separation was possible.
The council has, instead, raised visions of a new IIT coming up in Varanasi. The executive council, supreme in matters of policy, has suggested handing over 500 acres to the Centre to build a new IIT.
Failure to grant IIT status to IT-BHU, as promised by the Centre last year, will upset the students, now agitating against the delay on campus.
our hope may be well shatterd. BHU Executive council has refused to part with IT.

February 27, 2009 7:54 PMnow, what we are going to do after the rejection from BHU executive council.
March 1, 2009 8:13 AMIs there any chance of the ordinance of the conversion being passed before election or the current govt. can't pass any ordinance now?
March 7, 2009 3:36 AMWe should not sit quite on this issue. Somebody must go and meet Sh.Rahul Gandhi and Sh. Kapil Sibal, our new HRD minister.
June 30, 2009 9:52 PMAny new updates about conversion of our institute...
Is everything queit now...i joined this year hoping it'll be soon to find out its almost dead....
Any clear answer it'll be converted or not
July 3, 2009 9:45 PMMay we have the current status of IT BHU getting recognised as IIT? Since long there is no news on net/ in media? Does anybody really interested in this ?
July 4, 2009 5:31 AMJust saw this news. Though not sure, how much it means closure to reality. Especially after multiple back-stabbing from IIT council to politician to BHU council itself.
July 13, 2009 6:18 PMCream students of IT BHU are the off springs of JEE. Then what is that holding back of not giving it an IIT status. The Ministry is terribly impartial.
July 14th, 2009
How true is this story of hindustan times? It says 'The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has taken a decision to convert IT BHU into an IIT.'
oes it mean the government has finally decided??
I am about to join IT-BHU this year in the electrical engnn deptt and ill breathe easy if i get th idea of the timeline in which IIT status will be given to BHU. If IIT status is not given to BHU then it must stop admitting students through JEE so that future JEE qualifiers are not under a false impression when they are filling their choice sheets.
July 14, 2009 11:17 PMRecent news published by Hindustan times hs no meaning unless our HRD minister confirm and announce this news in the parliament session. U must have seen false promises earlier and how we take this news true.
July 16, 2009 4:53 AMGovt. is indeed delaying in converting I.T.- B.H.U.into an IIT. The institute definitely has vast potential in terms of faculty, infrastructure, research projects carried out and quality of students. Even the new IITs created do not have such facilities which the institute has. It is one of the oldest engineering institute which the country can be proud of. I wish to urge the ministry of HRD, Govt. of India to take a positive decision in this regard so that hundreds of students who can gain advantage of the facilities mentioned above may be diverted into other institutes although they are newer ones and do not have those facilities as yet which I.T.- B.H.U. can provide.

Kapil Sibal, MHRD, clears last hurdle in IT-BHU road to IIT-BHU
@ 07:28 PM
New Delhi, Sept. 7: Human resource development minister Kapil Sibal has cleared the last roadblock to the conversion of Banaras Hindu University's engineering wing into an IIT, accepting an administrative umbilical chord threatening to strangle the promised upgrade.
Sibal has accepted a BHU demand that its vice-chancellor be made a co-chairman on the board of governors of the proposed IIT to be created by cleaving the 93-year old university.
Top government officials confirmed to The Telegraph that Sibal yesterday signed his approval on the BHU demand, ending over three years of hectic bargaining between the university and the Centre.
ITBHU Mechanical Department Panoramic View
The Institute of Technology, BHU, first promised IIT status under the NDA government, may now finally be an IIT by the start of the 2010 academic session. "The minister's signature effectively seals the deal," a top official said.
There are no longer any differences between the HRD ministry and BHU on the structure and administration of the new institute, which will be called IIT-BHU.
IT-BHU is now scheduled to become India's 16th IIT and the first that will bear in its name a link to another institution.
The government and BHU will need to complete a series of bureaucratic and parliamentary procedures before IT-BHU's upgrade is official. The HRD ministry and the university will then need to implement a plan already in place to phase IT-BHU out of BHU and into an independent entity.
The HRD ministry will first include the name of IT-BHU in the list of new IITs that it has created, but which are still awaiting legal approval under amendments to the IIT Act. The Centre hopes to introduce the proposed amendments in the next session of Parliament.
