Dear all,
Over the next few days, we will be making our final push to achieve the long-awaited and well-deserved conversion of IT-BHU to IIT. From what we know, the wording of the resolution of the previous EC meeting of BHU was found to be restrictive by the HRD ministry, and therefore the conversion process is stalled.
We have prepared a petition for the Vice Chancellor of BHU, asking him to convene a meeting of the BHU EC as soon as possible, and clearly state his unconditional support for the conversion, as was conveyed to us informally in various ways (youtube video, press coverage).
Our aim is to present this petition with signatures in the next couple of days to the Vice-Chancellor and the BHU Executive Council.
Therefore, we urge you to sign the petition for converting IT-BHU to IIT, and also spread this link with fellow members of the IT-BHU community.
Thanks,
The IT-BHU Family

Sub: Conversion of IT-BHU to IIT-Petition from IT-BHU Community
Respected Sir:
We, the alumni, students, faculty and staff of the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), are deeply disturbed by the contents of the resolution of the Executive Council of BHU, which met on February 21, 2009 to consider the MHRD's plan to convert IT-BHU into an IIT.
As you may kindly recall, the MHRD and the Union Cabinet have in principle decided to take over IT-BHU, convert into an IIT and integrate with IIT system, as per PIB notifications dated March 28 and July 17, 2008. In February 2009, you had spoken to the Hon'ble HRD Minister and he had assured that the IT-BHU would be converted into an IIT. A few days later, there was another press release on your behalf on February 10, 2009 and an announcement by the Hon'ble Rector before the agitating students of IT-BHU that the University is committed to the conversion of IT-BHU into an IIT. However, the version of the EC resolutions which have come in the media does not reflect the commitments made by the university and is also not consonant with the MHRD and the Union Cabinet's decision for the takeover of IT-BHU, its conversion into an IIT and integration with the IIT system in the country.
This has puzzled us beyond our imagination, as we have been sincerely hoping that IT-BHU will be converted into IIT from July 2009 session.
In view of the above, we appeal to you to kindly stand by your commitments made to us all along for the conversion of IT-BHU into IIT-BHU. We sincerely believe that with your kind help, strong support and active persuasion in this matter, IT-BHU will become an IIT very soon. From this conversion, Malaviyaji's great Institute of technology will be given the due respect and status in National and International scenario and days will come when it will become one of the outstanding Institutes in the World.
We request you to kindly take all necessary action for removing the obstacles created by the EC resolutions in the conversion of IT-BHU into an IIT. We urge to you the call a meeting of BHU Executive Council as soon as possible and have the following agenda discussed and approved:
1) Separate IT-BHU from BHU in order to become a fully autonomous institute like any IIT and integrate with the IIT system in the country while retaining it as an integral part of BHU by remaining in the same campus and maintaining the linkages such as having participation of VC and his/her nominee in the governing body of IIT as well as in academics, professional, social etc. through an MoU
2) Approve your nomination as an appropriately empowered permanent ex-officio member of IIT-BHU (or IIT, Varanasi) Governing Board after conversion
3) Allow our institute to retain the existing campus.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,
The Alumni, Students, Faculty and Staff of IT-BHU

I strongly support and urge for the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT. IT-BHU has been a part of IIT network for over 25 years through the JEE entrance exams. IT-BHU has a solid academic program and network of accomplished alumni at par with that of any other IIT. The conversion is long overdue and shall be an acknowledgment of IT-BHU's 80 years of producing solid engineering talent and solid contribution to India's vast talent pool and skilled labor force.
April 25, 2009 7:19 PMWe always deserved it!
It's high time we get the IIT status!
April 25, 2009 7:22 PMI fully support that it is the most sensible thing to convert IT-BHU to an IIT and provide it with the much deserved funding and recognition that would boost its output even more.
April 25, 2009 7:45 PMThis is high time. IT-BHU is India's most deserving Institute to be converted into an IIT.
April 26, 2009 7:39 AMWe do not want IIT status. We deserve it.
April 26, 2009 10:34 AMI support the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT. Please expedite the approval process.
April 26, 2009 11:13 AMI support the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT. Please act now as there has been enough deliberations.
April 26, 2009 11:34 AMThis debate has gone on long enough. Go through with the original commitment without further delay.
April 26, 2009 12:51 PMI fully support that it is the most sensible thing to convert IT-BHU to an IIT
April 26, 2009 1:15 PMit is overdue and govt is planning to set up new iits this institute has total infrastructure ready why it is not being done
April 26, 2009 3:35 PMit is overdue and govt is planning to set up new iits this institute has total infrastructure ready why it is not being done
April 26, 2009 3:36 PMIT-BHU was the one most closely associated with IITs. It is ironical that other institutes have been recognized as IIT earlier than IT-BHU. Kindly give IT-BHU its due and do the needful.
April 26, 2009 5:44 PMThis conversion is the most deserving & long overdue . It is high time it is legitmately done. I strongly support the Cause & Vote for the speedy approval
April 26, 2009 7:31 PMWhat better way to give due recognition to the vision of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya than to convert this apex institute to an IIT?
April 26, 2009 7:59 PMप्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय को भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान का दर्जा मिल जाना चाहिये।
April 26, 2009 8:15 PMIt's high time that IT-BHU should be converted to IIT.
April 26, 2009 9:26 PMAfter clearing JEE in year 1972 I always thought I am in IIT (as I could have got into any IIT that time), it was never in my mind that I am outside IIT faternity. Its high time that IT BHU now be officially called IIT BHU
April 26, 2009 10:10 PMThere should not be any hurdle for the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT-BHU or IIT-Varanasi. It would rather be a win-to-win decision of BHU EC for the conversion, since after IIT comes into being here at BHU the entire BHU community could gainfully extract the benefit from the sisterly presence and co-existence of an international level institution just adjacent to BHU.
25 years is a huge timeframe, this must have been done much earlier, with all necessary infrastructure present, best faculty available, have not been able to understand what are pressure/ pain points.
As a much needed move for the betterment of the country which needs this conversion to produce and give the best of talent the right place they Deserve in corporate world and the country.
We belive this conversion would enable and give the country which is facing and wants to saisfy its huge talent shortage, the best of the breed available after filtering and clearing JEE.
I support this movement strongly.
Regards,
Subodh Gandhi
I support the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT. Please expedite the approval process.
April 26, 2009 11:08 PMIT-BHU has long been under the IIT-JEE umbrella and had selected students based on the same criteria. It is high time we instituionalise the same and convert it into an IIT for the sake of students, more than anything else.
Please expedite the process and fulfill a long standing promise.
April 26, 2009 11:22 PMI support the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT. Please expedite the approval process.

I support the petition. ITBHU should be given the promised conversion.
April 27, 2009 12:37 AMThe formal conversion to an IIT is both necessary and fair to alumni. And it would be a win for the university, city, state and ultimately the country!
April 27, 2009 12:57 AMIT-BHU is an all time great institute and far superior than the recently made (or converted) ones, in terms of standards of excellence and quality of education/facilities and faculty. However, it is a victim of unwilling attitude of our political leaders. It is unfortunate that we need to debate and represent again and again to the authorities, that it is in no way inferior to the rest of the IITs already in existence.
High time that it gets its due status and autonomy from the clutches of the politics.
April 27, 2009 1:52 AMEverybody within and outside BHU should strongly support the conversion of IT to IIT, it will further enhance value and recognition for BHU and its campus.
April 27, 2009 4:08 AM
Admission to BHU-IT as well as IITs are thro' the same competetive examination; well laid infrastructure is there at IT, faculty is highly qualified and engaged in advance reaserch.Alumni are spread through the world and occupying coveted posts(this is a testimony to the out putfrom the institute); what else is required to be made it as full fledge IIT. Probably "MANTRI JI KI DAYA CHAHIYE?"
I urge the responsible authorites to ensure that the conversion of IT-BHU to IIT is completed in a timely manner as promised.
I don't see any valid reason why there is delay in according the IIT status to ITBHU??
April 27, 2009 5:29 AMIT-BHU must get converted to IIT-BHU at earliest. I supports this conversion
April 27, 2009 5:45 AMIt is surprising that even after years of association with IIT system, IIT standard education & infrastructure, and MHRD consent, IT-BHU has not yet been converted to a full fledged IIT! It is high time, it should be converted into IIT, Varansi at the earliest.
April 27, 2009 7:06 AMAdmissions to ITBHU are being done through same exam (JEE) by which all other IITs admit the students since 1972. More over, ITBHU dont even have any sort of reservation/quota like teacher's quota or VIP quota. So, the students of ITBHU are those who have qualified JEE and are equally brilliant as those of other IITs.
This time we want to move under the tag of IIT, because the new IITs are going to degrade the level of our college, which is currently above some of the IITs as well in the rankings.
April 27, 2009 10:29 AMITBHU is no less than IITs but is not acknowledged of its true worth because of a single "I". This step will bring a huge change not only in the mindsets of students and faculties but also future employers and foreign universities who "shop" students by the IIT brand name. Hence it will open a plethora of opportunities for the untapped talent and bring value to the hard efforts that faculties and students put mutually during their academic interaction....
April 27, 2009 10:30 AMGreetings:
It will be an understatement to write that I just support this. I wish to further emphasize that the egos and hollow rivalries of individuals and organizations should not be allowed to hinder any progress of this effort. This will be easier to accomplish with unity and in the absence of any hidden agenda.
Dhanyawaad.
April 27, 2009 1:56 PMI hope BHU wants IT BHU to maintain its position as a prominant institution of technology in India and that will be greatest help to the cause of Malviya ji, who founded BHU with a vision of providing world class education locally. Realization of this will be possible only with the conversion of ITBHU into a full fledged IIT (Varanasi or BHU) as with 8 more IITs coming up and other institutes picking up fast ITBHU may become just another engineering college.
April 27, 2009 7:34 PMIT-BHU was premier College(BENCO) even before establishment of IIT's in 1960's. Gradually IIT's started gaining more aid from Government and IT-BHU somehow lost in that money Glamour.Despite that IT-BHU maintained its standards and churn out future Technological Leaders of India.Integration with IIT will only help in getting its overdue recognition Back.

Make it happen! Let not the petty considerations of vested interests come in the way! The conversion will help attract the best faculty, the best students and of course more funds. Surely, yeh sarva vidya ki rajadhani, deserves an IIT!
April 28, 2009 5:41 AMIT IS AN IDEA WHOSE TIME IS OVER DUE. LET BHU BE AT PAR WITH IIT.
April 28, 2009 8:53 AMThere has to be parity between BHU and the IIT's. Let's get it done.
April 28, 2009 8:55 AMI whole heartedly support this petition.. this is long overdue
April 28, 2009 9:00 AMIt should have been converted to IIT prior to the 6th IIT itself. I support the aforementioned petition.
April 28, 2009 9:26 AMBHU authorities should respectfully let itbhu go in the IIT system, otherwise there could be negative consequences. Till now they get our respect.
April 28, 2009 9:34 AMIt's now or never,,,,,we have been in JEE system for 3 decades,,,,for the sake of institutes funding and development it's important.
We are not begging, we deserve it and we must get it.
Strongly support IT-BHU to IIT conversion!

April 29, 2009 12:07 AMInitially I was also against the conversion because of breaking away from BHU. The present proposal takes care of this.
We are in the fore-front for almost a century and have produced some of the finest engineers of the country. We have a unique campus experience and share a legacy with a huge and strong Alumini base, unique feeling of brotherhood and support. With the growing affinity for brands and aggresive marketing - have made IIT a Brand and pushed IT-BHU to second place. The strengts of the Institute does not justify this even with a common JEE.
Now we have the opportunity to get the Brand IIT and also retain connections with BHU and share the same campus. We have the best of both worlds and should go ahead with this.
I request the VC to support the students thereby reserving for himself a respected position in the history of BHU and become part of the Legacy started by the great Mahamana.

April 29, 2009 3:32 AMI vote for this petition towards conversion of IT-BHU to IIT status.
April 29, 2009 6:09 AMIT BHU deserves to be given its due place & converted to IIT without any further delay.
April 29, 2009 8:18 AMEC-BHU is perhaps apprehensive that IT (heart of BHU)will slip from their hand. Where as they should be proud that one of the prestigious IITs they have in the campus. We may have to take some agitational steps.May God good sense prevail.
April 29, 2009 8:20 AMI extend my full support for this petition on upgrading IT-BHU to an IIT status.
April 29, 2009 3:57 PM
I think it is critical that the BHU administration support the conversion of IT-BHU to an IIT. The benefits of that conversion would be the enhancement of the image of IT, as well as the prestige it will bring to the University. That would result in the University attracting more external funding as well as collaboration with other world reknowned universities and other institutions. I hope the BHU administration sees this decision in that light and makes the decision for the conversion.
I support the petition. IT-BHU should be converted to IIT.

May 4, 2009 12:21 AMWhile I got into ITBHU thro' JEE ( same entrance exam of IIT ) way back in 1974 , I thought that by the time I pass out , ITBHU will get converted into IIT. Sadly , it did not happen. I am surprised why today this cannot be IIT when this is a premium institution w/o amny doubt is something which baffels me. I strongly support this conversion.

May 10, 2009 8:24 PMVaranasi is inextricably linked with ancient India and premier education. I.T. will only be further glorified by adding the word Indian to it. It is one of the 5 original IITs. I support it, not sure what is the fuss all about.
