New Delhi, Sept. 7: Human resource development minister Kapil Sibal has cleared the last roadblock to the conversion of Banaras Hindu University's engineering wing into an IIT, accepting an administrative umbilical chord threatening to strangle the promised upgrade.
Sibal has accepted a BHU demand that its vice-chancellor be made a co-chairman on the board of governors of the proposed IIT to be created by cleaving the 93-year old university.
Top government officials confirmed to The Telegraph that Sibal yesterday signed his approval on the BHU demand, ending over three years of hectic bargaining between the university and the Centre.

The Institute of Technology, BHU, first promised IIT status under the NDA government, may now finally be an IIT by the start of the 2010 academic session. "The minister's signature effectively seals the deal," a top official said.
There are no longer any differences between the HRD ministry and BHU on the structure and administration of the new institute, which will be called IIT-BHU.
IT-BHU is now scheduled to become India's 16th IIT and the first that will bear in its name a link to another institution.
The government and BHU will need to complete a series of bureaucratic and parliamentary procedures before IT-BHU's upgrade is official. The HRD ministry and the university will then need to implement a plan already in place to phase IT-BHU out of BHU and into an independent entity.
The HRD ministry will first include the name of IT-BHU in the list of new IITs that it has created, but which are still awaiting legal approval under amendments to the IIT Act. The Centre hopes to introduce the proposed amendments in the next session of Parliament.
Thanks to Charu Sudan Kasturi, The Telegraph, for the report

Has our institute received any communication from HRD regarding the change of IT-BHU to IIT-BHU.

Great news!! Great work guyz!!
Congratulations to all stakeholders. But i m still keeping my finger crossed. Waiting for the official inclusion of IT-BHU into IITs.
It is really a great news. Congratulations to all students, faculty members, alumni and staff. Long perseverance and committed efforts finally brought us the extra "I" which we always deserved to have.
September 16, 2009 8:03 PMCongrats! Even as we feel happy on this achievement, there are numerous good things about the BHU legacy which we should not forget. With Sixteen IITs around, it is the BHU part which will continue to give us our identity.
Thanks BHU, Thanks IT-BHU, Happy Birthday IIT-BHU!!!!

September 17, 2009 2:31 AMIn this article there are few points that I noted
1. No mention of ITBHU
2. Looks like Rajasthan has still not decided place for its IIT.
Dear All,
Winter session of parliament expected to commence in second week of November. Hope that the BHU and IIT amendment bill are passed in this session only without further delay.
When is the Union Cabinet approval for the conversion? It was to be couple of weeks before the Parliamentary Session of November.
October 6, 2009 12:38 PMIIT Rajasthan location will be decided after 8th of this months (as it looks like) .. then IIT Council on 19th Oct.. , hope it will go to the cabinet after that ... and then parliament .. (Probably from 9th Nov.. tentative) and they will not take IIT Act bussiness as the first job .. there are many more in the agenda like NCHER etc .. , so considering all these.. we can expect some thing by end of Nov .. or so ..(Considering the fact we have waited so loooooooong) .. a couple of week can be acceptable ...
by the way . .In off parliament time cabinet is meeting every thrusday ..( unless its not a holiday .. ) so a day to keep an eye on ...
October 6, 2009 10:56 PMAny update from any friend on IIT Council Meeting on 19th October ?
Regards
some updates about dates ... , location decision had been postponed .. , may be it will be decided this week .. and parliament is from 19th Nov ..
October 21, 2009 6:52 PMI am not sure how many of us are really aware of the fact that our issue of conversion of ITBHU-IIT has been quietly passed and approved in IIT council meeting held on Monday, 19th October under the Chairmanship of Hon'ble Minister Shri Kapil sibal-ji. Atleast I was not till Wednesday eveing.
When I heard this news on Wednesday, I could not believe as there was no report in media/PIB. However the news has been confirmed from several sources. The reason that the media could not give attention because they were too busy for reporting and discussing another buring issue on cut of marks for the students to appear for IIT-JEE.
In any case our issue was one the agenda in that IIT council meeting and it was discussed including the name and other details. For God's grace and Malaviyaji's blessings this has been approved without any objection. The approval of IIT council was necessary as IIT council is the highest decision making body regarding IIT issues. Any silly objection could have delayed the process. All of may recall that IIT council rejected our case in January 24, 2009 meeting and kept the issue at abeyance (i.e to close the chapter). According to me this one is a great success and an important development to our journey to reach to the final goal.
Still there are few other steps/ formalities which need to be completed before placing in Parliament. Let us hope for the best for November/December session!!!
Thank you for the update on IIT Council Meeting. Perhaps from now onward it is better if rest of legislative progress happens quietly and without media glare.
Along with other 8 IITs , this will also go through the process. Only we need to ensure that necessary amendmentd to bills are made in this batch itself with 8 IITs and does not go next batch of papers which will then wait for next session for introdction.
