Press Release - AGM 2008

agm08.JPG

May 17, 2008, New Delhi: At a scintillating evening jointly organized by the Association of IT-BHU Alumni (AIBA), NCR and the European Business Group, India here at the Air Force Auditorium, Subroto Park, India's youngest virtuoso pianist, Abhay Goyle, enthralled the distinguished gathering of EU ambassadors, senior government officials, seasoned technocrats, renowned academicians and alumni members of the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University. The evening, which saw the conferring of the AIBA Awards of Excellence 2008 to some of the most outstanding alumni of the Institute, was made sweeter by the mellifluous notes emanating from this child prodigy's piano. All of 12 years old, Abhay has been regaling audiences across the world, and has shared the dias with such luminaries as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Late Shri Naushad Ali, Ustand Amjad Ali Khan, Shri Anup Jalota and Shri Pankaj Udhas. This evening too, he took the audience on a melodious and memorable musical journey, as he played some classics from his Indian and Western repertoire of melodies. The assembled dignitaries and their families responded enthusiastically by giving the young and talented musician a standing ovation.

The event, however, was not just another cultural extravaganza. As Rajeev Gupta, Secretary, AIBA said on the sidelines of the event, "The Association of IT-BHU Alumni has always seen its role as going beyond just another alumni body that meets occasionally to wine and dine. In the spirit of the great founder of Banaras Hindu University, Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya ji, we have always striven to give our platform a socially relevant and meaningful role in nation building. One way to do this is to encourage young talents like Abhay. Another way is to bring the best of India's minds together with international ones, so that they can exchange ideas and explore potential growth and developmental areas. This year, we invited the European Business Group to be a part of the event, since we believe that business and commerce opportunities between India and Europe are still a long way from being fully tapped." His excitement was shared by many among the IT-BHU alumni present on the occasion as well as by the EU ambassadors and their senior staff. Several small groups of such people could be seen talking excitedly about one project, program or the other. Several ambassadors told this correspondent that there should be more such events organized, wherein working professionals from the Indian community could meet with senior functionaries of the European governments in a bid to leverage their mutual strengths, away from the political spotlights. Said one EU member ambassador, "The real strength of a relationship between any two countries does not lie in the several treaties and agreements executed between their governments, but in the perception in the common man's eyes about the value of such a relationship to him and his country. In such events, the people to people contact, conducted in a serious yet social setting, reinforces the positive perceptions."
The star-studded evening witnessed the 2nd Annual Awards of Excellence, 2008 being bestowed upon three of IT-BHU's distinguished alumni. These were Mr S.S. Kohli (CMD IIFC and ex CMD Punjab National Bank), Mr P C Jain (CMD Spectral Services) and Mr Supriyo Das Gupta (CMD MN Dastur & Co). They were lauded for their eminent role in nation building and carrying forward the legacy of the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University. One of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the engineering and technology domain, the Institute's pre-eminence was recently recognized by the Union Government, by according it the IIT status. The evening ended on a high note, with all attendees enjoying a lavish spread of cocktails and dinner.

Respected senior members of the association, Prof Dhar, Debashish, Sanjai  and other Governing Body members

Another successful year has gone by , another year which has strenthened our bonds , another year which has brought us closer , another year where we pay tribute our great Institution . With initiation coming from Mr. Onkar Gupta ( Director Lurgi), this year we  tried to meet some of the senior alumni in person . The reception was great wherever we went and whoever we  met . And my god ! How many of us are at the helm of affairs and holding key positions in the Industry. Mr. US Awasthi ( CMD IFFCO) , Mr Kohli ( ex CMD PNB),Mr Arbind Kumar ( CMD NPCC), Mr Rajan ( CMD PDIL), Mr. Satish Agarwal (CMD Kamdhenu Ispat), Mr. Dasgupta( CMD M. N Dastur & Co.), Mr. Pankaj Chandra ( Director IIM), Mr. PC Jain ( CMD Spectral Services), Mr. Pramil Jindal ( CMD Barmalt India), Col. SP Wahi ( ex CMD ONGC),Mr. Pankaj Vaish ( County Head Accenture).  Mr. Banerjee ( ex CMD Gail) , Mr. BC Bora ( ex CMD ONGC), Mr. K.K. Nohria( Chairman emeritus Crompton Greaves), Mr VP Goyal(MP)......I can go on & on .......Infant my work as the Head of a HR consulting firm takes me to several organizations and I am zapped that almost everywhere one goes one finds our alumni holding a coveted office.

Coming to our programs this year .During the current year, we started our program with a talk on " Right To Information Act "by Information Commissioner Mr Ansari, at Manav Rachna Auditorium ,on 28th sept 2007.Around 35 members attended . The Program was hosted by Prof Bansal and the expenses related to it were picked by his instution.

On Popular demand we advanced  our Picnic this year to 18th November  instead of February , so that people  could  participate without being bothered by the examination season. The venue was Nehru Park . The attendance though was again about 40 people which was not very different from last several years.

The Annual Dinner  was held on 22.12.2007. It  was held at the House of Mr. Viren Kaushik (1967 Mech) who very graciously  agreed to give the venue for the event . Mr. Pramod Joshi was the master of ceremonies, and he engaged the attendees with various activities. This time also we had a lot of cultural events performed by children of alumni. Our Sanjeev Sharma ( 1982 )enthralled the audience this year also  by rendering Kishore Kumar hits . We had about 200 people who attended and as usual it was a big success

As you are aware , last year, we had  instituted an award for significant contributors from amongst our distinguished alumni. We are carrying forward the tradition .....This year also an eminent Jury under the Chairmanship of Mr. AK Sah  ( ex-CMD NTPC) and consisting of stalwarts like  Mr. MK Modi ( Modigroup),Mr. Deepak Pahwa( CMD Bry- Air ) , Mr. RP Singh ( CMD Power Grid), Dr Raj Singh( Pro VC Amity University) , Mr. Kashi Memani ( Ex- chairman PWC)   and Mr. Vinod  Chandiok (Grant Thorton ) was constituted to do the onerous task of judging the significant contributors .......Of course you would appreciate that  the task is extremely difficult . Although everything is done to keep it objective , it may result in  a few heart burns  .I would just like to clarify that our intention is to award all eminent  alumni  but since the volume of such  people is very high, it may take a few years to reach to  all those who are deserving . I hope we would all take it in the right spirit.....

In this journey we have added another first this year . We are co-hosting the awards function tonite  with European Business Group ( EBG) an equally eminent body representing the European Business World .Hope this would add another dimension in  enhancing  the EU-India relations .We  have also added "A life time achievement Award" this year.

The Honourable members may find the Souvenir 2008 to have more of articles and write ups; we have attempted this year to try and make the Souvenir a compendium of the the literary capabilities of our members and their families, in addition to it carrying the directory of members and messages. We have also brought in pictures of various alumni events held across the world.

In addition to these activities, your association had  also been lobbying with the Ministry of HRD, together with the Institute officials, to try and push for an upgradation to IIT. As you might be aware that this has got the cabinet nod this year and we understand that the process of this upgradation is on .

We are also taking up projects for building / upgrading infrastructure of the Institute, and in this, we are working closely with the nominated officials of the Institute, and the Director.

While we had planned to add our current portfolio of activities, we have been held back for want of organisers and volunteers. Honourable members will appreicate that unless the association is broad based, and we have additional volunteers for taking up these activities, it is not possible for a small group of governing body members only to try and expand the scope of our activities. I again request you to please come out and help us in making the association more vibrant.

To come back to another important item: the member database. To reach to you , we also taken up a paid SMS facility this year. Despite our best efforts, we have found that every time a mailing campaign - whether electronic or otherwise - is carried out, about 40% of the e-mails, and a similar number of couriered letters come back to us, which other than the wasted money, also inhibits our capability to reach out to you, and get complaints from honourable members as to how they were not informed about some event or the other. I would like to repeat that this can be enabled if and only if you keep us updated about your changes - in address, telephone numbers, offices, e-mail addresses. On behalf of the association, I request you again to please drop a mail, giving details of your changes, so that the database can be updated. We are also trying to have a software created, which will make it easier for us to maintain the database - if some member can help, it would be appreciated.

Please also participate by sharing your ideas on how the reach of the association can be inproved, and how its bandwidth can be increased. Slowly and slowly, we would like the association to become an important part of our lives, and would like to see the association moving beyond networking within the alumni group to Institution building and, maybe, to nation building.

I shall not take up more time, and hand over the podium to our Treasurer, Mr. Sanjai Sorrick.

With best regards

Rajeev Gupta

Secretary
