The 6th IT-BHU Alumni AGM was jointly hosted by AIBA(Association of IT-BHU Alumni) and EBU (European Business Group, India.) The evening witnessed a huge turn up and turned out to be a great evening for those who attended.
The evening started with the rich tradition by honoring the great founder of Banaras Hindu University, Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya ji with a floral tribute followed by lighting of lamp and the BHU Kulgeet. The aura created made everyone feel as if they were attending some event at the BHU Campus!
After a brief welcome address by AIBA President Prof. B.B. Dhar, Mr. Debasish Bhattacharya, Vice-President AIBA spoke about the progress being made globally by IT-BHU alumni. This was followed by the Secretery's report by Mr. Rajeev Gupta and then the Treasurer's report by Mr. Sanjai Sorick. The meeting ended with the election of new office bearers and Governing Body.
Then came a stunning performance by India's youngest virtuoso pianist, Abhay Goyle, who enthralled the distinguished gathering of EU ambassadors, senior government officials, seasoned technocrats, renowned academicians and alumni members of the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University by the mellifluous notes emanating from this child prodigy's piano. All of 12 years old, Abhay has been regaling audiences across the world, and has shared the dias with such luminaries as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Late Shri Naushad Ali, Ustand Amjad Ali Khan, Shri Anup Jalota and Shri Pankaj Udhas. This evening too, he took the audience on a melodious and memorable musical journey, as he played some classics from his Indian and Western repertoire of melodies. The assembled dignitaries and their families responded enthusiastically by giving the young and talented musician a standing ovation.
The Slovenian Ambassador, Mr. Miklaz Borstnik spoke on "Role of Institutions of Excellence in Garnering EU-India Relationship". He said "The real strength of a relationship between any two countries does not lie in the several treaties and agreements executed between their governments, but in the perception in the common man's eyes about the value of such a relationship to him and his country. In such events, the people to people contact, conducted in a serious yet social setting, reinforces the positive perceptions."
The stage and the evening's proceedings were flawlessly managed by Mr. Pramod Joshi. His shuttle sense of humor made the proceedings more interesting. The piano recitals were continued in-between and every time Abhay put his hands on the Piano, he stunned everyone in the auditorium.
The star-studded evening witnessed the 2nd Annual Awards of Excellence, 2008 being bestowed upon four of IT-BHU's distinguished alumni. These were:
1. Mr. S.S. Kohli for his outstanding contribution in the area of financial management and banking. Mr. Kohli holds a B.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) from BENCO, Banaras Hindu University and Diploma in Industrial Finance. View Citation
2. Dr. Prem C. Jain for his contribution in Environment and Development in general and Special Services Consulting Engineer in particular. Dr. Jain graduated in Mechanical Engineering from BENCO, Banaras Hindu University in 1957. He obtained his Post Graduation and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Minnesota, USA in 1967. View Citation
3. Mr. Supriya Das Gupta for his outstanding contribution in the field of Metallurgical Engineering in general and design and development in particular of iron and steel industry in India and abroad. Mr. Gupta is a graduate in Metallurgical Engineering, Min-Met, Banaras Hindu University, 1955, and PG Diploma in Metallurgy, Mechanical and Electrical of Iron and Steel from Technical Institute, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur in 1957. This year AIBA introduced the IT-BHU Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award and this year's award was conferred to
Mr. Anirudh Kumar Sah for his long outstanding contributions in the field of Development and Management of Energy Sector in India. Mr. Sah holds B.Sc. (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering) from BENCO, Banaras Hindu University, 1947. View Citation and
Col. (Dr.) S.P. Wahi (View Citation) for his outstanding contribution in the management in general and oil and natural gas sector in particular. Col. (Dr.) S.P. Wahi graduated in 1949 from BENCO, Banaras Hindu University with B.Sc. (Electrical & Mechanical). He was Chairman, ONGC from 1st October 1981 to 15th December 1989. He has been CMD of Cement Corporation of India for nearly 3 years. He was at BHEL, Haridwar from 1974 to 1978. He was Chief of Planning and Inspection of Bokaro Steel Limited (SAIL) from 1969 to 1974.
During his army days he had two tenures in Jammu and Kashmir on Uri and Sialkot sector. He had training in U.K./Germany with British Army on Armoured Fighting Vehicles, Manufacturing and Maintenance. He is a recipient of Padma Bhushan National Award 1988, Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) by Indian School of Mines, 1985, Doctorate of Engineering (Honoris Causa) by Roorkee University, 1987, Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) by Banaras Hindu University, 1989 and Giant International Award, 1989 and has several awards to his credit including Life Time Achievement Award by Petrotech in 2007.
Col. Wahi has over 50 articles on Oil, Energy, Leadership, Corporate Governance, published in National and international publications/magazines. His book Leading from the Front published by Sterling Publishers has been a big success in Corporate Leadership. 25 copies of his book were put for a 'Silent Auction' and the response was outstanding. One of the Alumnus, Mr. Mohan Saxena had bid for all of them and it was the highest bid too!
Shri Arun Kumar Rath, IAS, Secretary (School Education and Literacy), Govt. of India addressed the audience on "Role of Institution of Excellence in the shaping of Economy - A Tribute to IT-BHU"
The Souvenir was released by Mr. Miklaz Borstnik, The Slovenian Ambassador along with the recipients of the awards of excellence. Abhay enthralled the audience for the last time in the evening by his unmatched performance. He was facilitated by AIBA for making the evening a treat to the ears.
The evening ended on a high note, with all attendees enjoying a lavish spread of cocktails and dinner.
