Govt. team to visit IT

A THREE-MEMBER committee of the Union Human Resources Development Ministry will be visiting Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on November 16 and 17 in view of the government’s plan to grant IIT status to the Institute of Technology (IT).

According to information, former faculty member at IIT-Kanpur and Madras Institute of Developmental Studies director Prof Anand Krishnan would lead the expert team.
Former vice-chancellor of Roorkee University, Prof DB Singh, and former IIT-Kharagpur director Prof Amitabh Ghosh are the other team members.

IT (BHU) director Prof SN Upadhyay said they would apprise the team members of the departmental profile. He further said preparations were full swing in view of the proposed visit.
Sources added that the team would also take stock of the infrastructure facilities on the IT campus during the two-day visit.

Representatives of IT have also presented their Vision Document before the HRD Ministry.
As many as seven institutes, including IT (BHU), Engineering College of Usmania University, Bengal Engineering College (Shivpur, West Bengal), Engineering and Technology Department of Jadhavpur University (Kolkata), Zaqir Hussain Engineering and Technology College of Aligarh Muslim University, College of Engineering at Andhra University and Kochin University of Science and Technology, are competing for the IIT status.

Sources said a meeting of experts would also be held in the HRD Ministry in New Delhi on Friday to consider the proposals of these seven institutes.
