New Delhi: The Union government may have put on hold its plan to set up new IITs, but it has set the ball rolling to evaluate whether seven engineering institutes could be upgraded to the level of IITs.
The Union ministry of human resources development has set up a committee under M Ananda Krishnan of Madras Institute of Development Studies. The committee is expected to submit its report by mid-January. Mr Krishnan, a former professor at IIT Kanpur, will be heading a three-member committee. The other members are DV Singh, former vice-chancellor, Roorkee University, and Amitava Ghosh, former director, IIT Kharagpur, and currently professor at IIT Kanpur.
