Electrical Engineering Dept. organises Prastuti 2006
Arun @ Apr 13, 2006
PRASTUTI - All India Engineering Student Paper Contest organized by Electrical Engineering Society, was conceived in August 2000 when the IEE, IT-BHU chapter felt the need to start an activity to assist the budding technological issues in their fields. The idea was to provide a platform nearer home to inculcate in the students a culture of research, thinking and presenting new ideas and technologies. The idea was that a successful engineer is not only able to research and create new technologies but is also able to present his/her subject in a professional manner. To enable it to be a platform for students to debate the recent issues which dominated industrial space in a big way, four categories were created viz.

  • Electronics & Communication
  • Computer Systems
  • Electrical Engineering

Important Fields Related to Electrical Engineering

A committee of teachers and experts reviewed the papers received and the authors whose papers are selected for presentation are invited to IT-BHU. The presentations are held in the state-of-the-art Senate Hall of BHU Swantantrata Bhawan where a group of teachers, experts and students question the presenters on the merits and de-merits of their papers and debate on a host of issues related to the papers.

PRASTUTI is one of the activities among a host of other activities of IEE/IEEE IT-BHU Chapter where students are encouraged to participate in quiz contests, software design. Beneficiaries of this event, however, have been the student organizing bodies of the successive editions of PRASTUTI as the experience of organizing an All India level paper presentation contest has enriched them and developed their skills.

This year, PRASTUTI invitations were sent to more than 250 colleges and an excellent response was received with about 180 out station papers in total. The event started on 24th March, Friday. In the inaugural function, Mr. Sanjay Kr. Saxena, Technical Advisor and Director of Preemptive Systems Ltd. were invited as chief guest. The director of the institute Prof. S.N.Upadhyay, Dean of students Prof. J.N. Sinha and the Head of Department of Electrical Engineering Prof. S.C.Gupta were also among the dignitaries present. The event was organized from 24-26th march.

For the slide presentation in Electrical Engineering category, sponsored by Areva T&D, the presentation included simulations and studies related to core Electrical engineering such as 3 phase ac-ac converter, semi-global stabilization of linear systems, weld free contactors etc. Among the posters presented in this, interesting topics like Kalman filter, Magnetic levitation and new types of motors were lucidly presented by students. The first prize was awarded to Mitesh Popat of IIT Roorkee for his paper on Modeling And Simulation Of A Three Phase Ac- Ac Matrix Converter Using Direct Transfer Function Approach. From IT BHU, Rajat Kashyap of 4th yr Electrical Engineering bagged the third prize. In the posters, M.Vykuntarao and D.Siva Nagahari of J.N.T.U.C.E Kakinada won the first prize for their poster on Motorator. In Computer science category, sponsored by Flextronics, the papers covered a wide range of topics and innovations in the field of Computer science such as Optical Ethernet, Online character recognition and encryption algorithms. The First prize was given to P.Basu of 3rd yr Computer science, IT BHU while Ashutosh Parkhi of same branch and yr was third. For the posters, Saurabh Tripathi and Ritu Nayak of IEC College of Engineering & Technology, Greater Noida were awarded the first prize.

In Electronics and communication category – an interesting slide session comprising of topics like Mobile controlled domestic appliances, neutron dosimetry and multiplexer decomposition using genetic algorithms was discussed. Sudeep Tandon of B.Tech Pt. IV Electronics Engineering IT BHU won the first prize and Shilpi Prasad of 3rd yr IT BHU stood 2nd in the contest.

Papers presented in other important fields related to electrical engineering covered concerns related to Bio-medical engineering like Bio-electronic sensors, security using Bio-metrics etc. Sushant Mittal and Rahul Gupta of IT BHU won first prize for his paper on Blind’s paradise.

Apart from paper presentations, PRASTUTI 2006 also hosted a number of other interesting events. On the first day, delegates from Flextronics gave an informative talk on 3G technology in Mobile communication. It was followed by an interactive technical quiz on the same topic by Shravan Kr Shukla, an Alumni of Electrical Engineering department, IT BHU in the senate hall. He is currently associated with Flextronics Software Systems. In this quiz many attractive prizes were given on the spot. The next day, there was a software quiz sponsored by Swastik computers on C language. There was a talk on studying abroad in Australia by Mrs. Hema Sharda. In this talk students were informed about the procedures and the requirements for foreign studies.
