Hostel Wi-Fi project-Frequently Asked Questions

Q-1: What is Hostel Wi-Fi project?
A-1: It is a project to connect all the ten hostels on our campus through wireless access points, so that students can use their computers in the hostel rooms, without any need to go out for web surfing.

(Note-Gandhi Smriti Girls’ hostel was connected by wired internet in Feb. 2004, The project was funded by the class of 1979).

Q-2: Describe the project.
A-2: The project involves installing wireless routers in each hostel so that students can use internet facility in hostels. The university has already provided high-speed internet connection of 10 Gbps speed which terminates at each hostel.

Wi-Fir project will take the 802.11g/b access to the hostel rooms. The total estimated project cost is estimated to be Rs. 22.74 lakhs ($50,000 approx.)

It is targeted for completion by beginning of 2006-2007 academic year, i.e. by July 2006.

Q-3: Which hostels are covered under this project?
A-3: All 10 hostels of IT-BHU are covered under this project. They are:

  5. Rajputana
  6. 6.Raman
  7. Vishwakarma
  8. Visvesvarya
  9. Vivekananda
  10. ITBHU Girls’ Hostel

Q-4: What is the status of the project?
A-4: We have received a competitive bid from a leading vendor in India for the project. The total cost of Rs. 22.74 lakhs includes hardware cost of Rs. 17.62 lakhs and service/installation cost of Rs. 5.12 lakhs. A Purchase Order for a total amount of Rs. 22.74 lakhs will be issued to the vendor very soon.

Q-5: How much should I donate?
A-5: The donation for Hostel Wi-Fi project is entirely voluntary and there is no minimum or maximum amount to donate. All-students/alumni/faculty/well-wishers-are encouraged to donate.

All donors who donate Rs. 20,000 or more (in India) or $500 or more (abroad) will have his name permanently listed in the List of Patrons for the project. For large donors who donate Rs. 40,000 or more (in India) or $1,000 or more (abroad) will have his name listed on a plaque, to be installed in Alumni Cell office on the campus. A person can also take up the tab of providing Wi-Fi internet for the hostel of his choice, by contributing the amount for connecting one such hostel, i.e. Rs. 2,00,000 (or $5,000). ITBHUGlobal.org is contemplating to provide a permanent display (plaque or something similar). We are in the process of working through these logistics and all of these arrangements are pending approval by the administration.

Q-6: How long will the fund collection drive continue?
A-6: The fund collection drive will continue till our target amount ($50,000 approximate or Rs. 22,74,000) is achieved. Since we plan to complete the project by July 2006, we hope to collect the target amount by May/June 2006. Any surplus amount collected will be used towards implementing similar project, such as “Hostel intranet project” which will cover whole of IT including Institute / Common facilities and Hostels.

Q-7: Can I avail income-tax deduction for the amount donated?
A-7: Yes, ITBHUGlobal.org registered in California, USA has applied for the status as a charitable organization with US government, under the clause 501(c)(3). All donors residing in USA can claim the amount donated for income-tax deduction with immediate effect. Similarly Bangalore based Prayas has also applied for registration as charitable organization in India.

Q-8: How the donation can be paid?
A-8: At present, dues can be paid by either cash or check or PayPal. Dues can either be sent directly to Jagadish Bandhole, treasurer or can be handed over to coordinators of local/regional chapters of ITBHUGlobal.org association. A business account for ITBHUGlobal.org is maintained in a San Francisco, USA branch of Bank of America. All checks must be drawn on “ITBHU Organization of Alumni, Inc.”

Please note that whatever may be method of payment, all the donated amounts will be received by ITBHUGlobal.org organization and shall be exclusively used for Wi-Fi project. For more details on the modes of payment, refer to itbhuglobal.org website: http://www.itbhuglobal.org/donate/
