Petrotech recognizes lifetime efforts of B K Bakshi and S P Wahi

New Delhi, January 17, 2007

The Lifetime Achievement Awards in Petrotech-2007 went to B K Bakshi, former Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOC) and Padmabhushan Col. S P Wahi, former Chairman of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC).

The Petrotech series of Conferences had instituted this Life time Achievement Awards in 1999, to honour outstanding contributions to the development of Indian Oil and Gas industry.

The Petrotech-2007 Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contribution in Downstream Oil and Gas Industry went to Bhism Kumar Bakshi. Born in 1936, Bakshi did his Industrial Engineering from the Oklahoma State University, USA. His commitment to national energy security brought him back to Indian petroleum sector.

After rising to the Board of IOC, Bakshi brought in a number of changes in the business approach of the public enterprise. The Manpower Productivity of IOC improved to 40% higher than even that of the multinationals. IOC also became the first Indian Public Enterprise to enter the portals of Fortune- Global-500.

The Petrotech-2007 Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contribution in Indian Upstream industry went to Col. Satya Pal Wahi, former Chairman of ONGC. An electrical engineer from Benaras Hindu University, Col. Wahi started his career in the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of the Indian Army.

Col. Wahi joined the corporate sector, and soon came to be known as an astute turnaround strategist. He was the chairman of ONGC during 1981-89. His regime saw ONGC achieve phenomenal growth, with major thrust on indigenization and IT initiatives.

He is known for his 3 Fs in management viz. Fairness, Friendliness and Firmness. During the end of his tenure, ONGC’s production peaked its all-time high. He was awarded Padmabhushan in 1988.

The Petrotech-2007 Lifetime Achievement Awards carried with them a ceremonial shawl, a scroll, a purse of rupees two lakh and a lifetime achievement Trophy each.

Padma Bhushan (Col) S P Wahi, the high-profile former Chairman of ONGC was the Chief Guest of the occasion. Pointing to the great work being done by ONGC for the nation, the former Chairman said that ONGC has a great future.
