Varanasi, January 23

EMINENT SCIENTIST and advisor to the Indian Space Research Organisation, Padma Vibhushan Prof MGK Menon, said the growth of science depended upon the social milieu.

He was delivering the inaugural address of a four-day international seminar on ‘History of Indian Science and Technology’ at Swatantrata Bhawan in Banaras Hindu University here on Tuesday. The Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology Department of BHU, in association with Infinity Foundation (USA), had organised the seminar.

Prof Menon, also former director general of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said scientific discoveries were influencing the society today. Expressing serious concern, he said bright minds were not going for science in India. He stressed the need to create an atmosphere where young minds came forward and helped in the growth of science.

“We must know the history of science and technology and it should be encouraged as an area of study. Ayurvedic system was totally different from allopathic system as Ayurveda had a holistic approach. A large part of allopathic medicines was based on Ayurveda but lacked holistic approach,” he said.

Noted scientist and former director of IT-BHU Prof TR Anantharaman delivered the keynote address.
