Varanasi, March 8

ABOUT 500 million adults worldwide were suffering from chronic kidney diseases, experts said here on Thursday. They were speaking at a World Kidney Day programme. The Nephrology Department of the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University and the International Society of Nephrology organised the function.

Eminent nephrologists said early detection was the best way to avoid kidney transplant or dialysis. “Kidney transplant and dialysis are too expensive for citizens of developing countries,” they said.

“Only 4 to 5 per cent of the population in India can afford kidney transplant or dialysis,” they added. “Early detection of kidney diseases is possible through simple urine and blood tests,” they said.

Head of the Nephrology Department Prof Rana Gopal Singh, Prof Jai Prakash, Dr PK Rai and Dr Shivendra Singh laid stress on raising awareness about these diseases. Prof Rana Gopal Singh, Head of the Urology Department Prof Udai Shanker Dwivedi, Prof Jai Prakash, Dr Shivendra Singh and Prof Pratap Bahadur Singh also held a panel discussion. They said one should undergo regular check-up to avoid chronic kidney diseases.

Besides, a free health screening programme to detect kidney disease, diabetes, blood pressure and cardiac trouble were organised at Sir Sunderlal Hospital of the BHU.
