ABOUT 500 million adults worldwide were suffering from chronic kidney diseases, experts said here on Thursday. They were speaking at a World Kidney Day programme. The Nephrology Department of the Institute of Medical Sciences at Banaras Hindu University and the International Society of Nephrology organised the function.
Eminent nephrologists said early detection was the best way to avoid kidney transplant or dialysis. “Kidney transplant and dialysis are too expensive for citizens of developing countries,” they said.
“Only 4 to 5 per cent of the population in India can afford kidney transplant or dialysis,” they added. “Early detection of kidney diseases is possible through simple urine and blood tests,” they said.
