Campus News: All India Seminar on Future Scenario of Energy

The Institution of Engineers, Varanasi Local Center (IEVLC)& the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering jointly organised the All India Seminar on “Energy : The Future Scenario”. The seminar was held on 10th and 11th March, 2007 in Swatantrata Bhawan, BHU.

The inaugural function of the seminar set the tone for the coming two days as the Chief Guest, Sri Mihir Moitra, Vice President, Hindalco Industries Ltd. incorporated in his speech the present energy scenario in general in the country, the efforts of his company in making itself more energy efficient. The Guest of honor, Sri R.K. Hegde, Additional Director, Central Power Research Institute, Bangalore gave insight into developments in the area of renewable sources of energy. The inaugural function was presided over by Prof. S.K. Sharma, Head of Department, Department of Mechanical Engineering, ITBHU. The Chairman of the seminar, Prof. B.B. Bansal, the convener of the seminar and the Chairman of IEVLC, Prof. A.K. Agarwal and Dr. R.K. Mishra, the organizing Secretary were the others who were present in the inaugural function.

The seminar consisted of 5 technical sessions of paper presentation intertwined with a cultural function at the end of the first day. The seminar was concluded by a panel discussion on the theme of the seminar. The seminar saw 47 papers being presented and a few keynote lectures by some of the renowned names of the country.

The keynote lectures, which were one of the most important parts of the seminar, were given by Mr. R.K. Hegde, Shri S.C. Solanki, Ex-head of dept., Dept. of Mechanical Engg, IIT-Roorkee, Mr. S.V. Bhate, Technical Advisor to the Director-Refineries, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Mr. Raju Kalra, EESD Div., L.G. Electronics Pvt. Ltd. and Shri P. Banerjee, Steel Authority of India Ltd.
The evening of first day was graced by a Bharatnatyam performance, and two plays from the renowned Aarshi Theatre Group from Kolkata.

The event concluded with a heated panel discussion where all the members had assumed different roles viz. Mr. B. K. Padhi, Manager, Captive Power Plant, NALCO, assumed the role of energy consumer, Mr. Raju Kalra assumed the role of energy consuming electronics goods manufacturer, Mr. R.K. Hegde assumed the role of power management and production person, Mr. S.V. Bhate, the energy producer, Mr. P. Banerjee, another energy consumer and Shri S.C. Solanki, the academician. The moderator of the event was Prof. B.B. Bansal. The panel discussion on the theme of the seminar was very interesting for the students apart from the other participants present there as well.

Prof. AK Agarwal concluded the seminar by thanking all the people individually who had come from far and apart to make it a success.
