(Forwarded by Vasudevan Raghavan, Mechanical 1983. Email: vasuerfolg@alumni.itbhu.ac.in)
The Class of 1983 is meeting at IT campus in Varanasi on 27th, 28th and 29th December 2008 to celebrate their Silver Jubilee Year of graduation. Among the various programs and events being planned as part of this rendezvous include; a visit to Sarnath, a meeting with the Director Dr. S.N. Upadhyay and a possible meeting with the Vice Chancellor of the University. For the meetings with the Director and the VC, we are hoping to get their calendar commitments and are hopeful of clinching these.
Other events being planned are:
1. A round tour of the Institute (all departments) – could be reminiscent of the round tour we all were taken on during our first days at the Institute!!
2. Interactive meetings with the current students (in groups)
3. An open-for-all dinner that is meant to be an occasion for the current students to mix and mingle and eventually network with the 1983 batch
4. A thanks-giving and felicitations event in which we hope to present mementos to some (or all) Faculties from our times (if they happen to be around). The specifics of this event are being worked out by a group led by Pratap Mohan, Supreet Jain et al.
5. We hope to announce, during or around this event, a project or undertaking that the 1983 batch will own / sponsor for our Alma Mater. The exact project that would be taken up is being discussed among the larger group of the 1983 batch.
6. A banquet / dinner at a Five-star hotel to which the Director and faculty will be invited.
Not to forget about having chai at Bechus / Mochus / DG Corner etc., (if these joints are still around !!), a visit to the Birla Mandir, Godowlia / Hanuman Ghat / Vishwanathjee Mandir / Sankat Mochan, as the case may be. Lankating could also be on the cards!! A visit to Pehalwaan shop and to taste the ever mouth-watering “loungalathaa” should certainly be counted upon.
All in all, we would try to re-live the grand campus life we enjoyed for five long years in a matter of three days and to show pieces of this to our family too!! A prime time for nostalgia, all said and done.
Many of us have planned to land up on 26th afternoon itself and would be leaving around the noon of 30th Dec., so for some of us, it will practically be a five day event.
Accommodations are being arranged at the IT-BHU guest house and also at some of the five-star / three-star hotels at Varanasi. Reuniting alumni will pay directly for the rooms. Transportation from and to these hotels will also be organized. Naturally, all these expenses will be met by the reuniting alumni themselves, by contributing generously for the reunion event. Any money that is left over after meeting all the reunion expenses will be donated to the itbhuglobal.org corpus.
We hope to and INTEND to have a great time during the reunion and wish to issue a call to all graduates of the Class of 1983 to join the bandwagon and make it a grand success.
IT-BHU Alumni meet at Sydney, Australia - a report

The 1st Sydney Chapter IT-BHU Alumni meet was held at Bicentennial Park on the August 24th, 2008.
This meet was organized informally and the format was similar to that of a picnic in the iconic and centrally located Bicentennial Park in the Sydney Olympic Park suburb. After the initial spate of emails preceding the planned event, around 15 people confirmed their attendance. People started gathering from around 2-2:30 PM. Many of us did not know each other and so started introducing themselves. There were 3 alumni from the 21st century batch (2000 onwards), 1 from the 1990s batch, many from 1980s, a few from 70s and even 60s’. After about an hour or so, when the numbers increased to about 20 or so (around 35 including family members), Harpreet Marwah (Electronic 2003) and Alak Jhaji (Electrical 1967) (fondly called Bhishm Pitamah in the Sydney circle) requested everyone to form a large circle and do the introduction round.
This introduction round was mainly for everyone to introduce themselves and recall some fond memories of their days in IT-BHU. The introduction round started from the youngest members to the oldest. Harpreet and Pramod introduced as 2003 batch and gave all of us updates of the popular IT Girls Hostel. How the Girls hostel started as being rooms in a proper house and ended as a hostel behind Vishwesharaya Hostel. Jhaji from 1967 batch recalled his days from the BENCO where the hostel was not even located in the campus and how they moved into the campus after their first year outside the campus. Shashi Baranwal (Civil 1983) recalled how they had a major flood in Banaras during their college days.
Many of the guys had brought along their wives too, and some had even brought their children. The wives had been thoughtful enough to bring along some food to go around too!
After all the talking, it had gotten fairly late in the afternoon, and everyone realized that they had actually been starving for a while. Some very welcome meat curry and rice brought by Meena – Somir’s wife – as also some upma that Devaki – Partha’s wife – had brought, began to get circulated at that point.
By this time weather had also started to turn fairly chilly and when foam cups with hot tea brought in a flask by someone began to get handed around, they were greeted with almost the same intensity of joy as that with which a few hours back the alumni had greeted their “long lost BHU-IT” friends! This also brought back fond memories to many, of the 10 paisa chais from Bechu’s little stall outside De hostel. Someone then broke the sad news that Bechu’s tea-stall had disappeared a while ago…..Sad but true.
After the tea, with the cold really beginning to set in, it was time to trudge back to the various parts of that huge park, locate our cars, and return back to our day-to-day, mundane routines, amidst promises of the organization of a similar event in a couple of months’ time…..
The event concluded with the some photos and contact swapping sessions.

CE Grad Student wins top honor at TeraGrid '08 Conference

Sanjiv Kumar, a PhD Student working with Professor Venkatesh Merwade in the Hydraulics and Hydrology area of the School of Civil Engineering recently won the first prize in Graduate Student Research Competition at TeraGrid ‘08 Conference, held in Las Vegas from June 9 – 13, 2008. His poster titled “Cyberinfrastructure for Environmental Data and Modeling” demonstrated the most efficient and justifiable use of the greatest computational power (TeraGrid) for scientific investigation in hydrology. Other co-authors on the poster include Dr. Carol Song and Lan Zhao from Purdue’s Rosen Center for Advance Computing.
TeraGrid is a public domain computational infrastructure that integrates computing resources from eleven partner institutions (including Purdue) in the United States to provide 750 teraflops of computing capability and more than 30 petabytes of online and archival data storage, with rapid access and retrieval over high-performance networks (see
http://www.teragrid.org). Sanjiv’s research using TeraGrid involved modeling of 26 hydrologic scenarios in St. Joseph River Watershed in northern Indiana to investigate modeling uncertainty in understanding of watershed hydrology. This study which would have taken more than a year on a regular desktop computer was accomplished in less than two weeks using TeraGrid resources. Sanjiv’s research is a part of a larger ongoing collaborative project at Purdue titled “Cyberinfrastructure for End-to-End Environmental Explorations (C4E4)” funded by the National Science Foundation. (Dr. S. K. Shrivastava is a Reader in Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering. His research team has done break-through research in developing valproic acid combination medicine for treatment of epilepsy. This pioneer research work was released at British Pharmaceutical Conference held at Manchester, UK, during September 7-9, 2008.)
(Dr. S. K. Shrivastava)
LONDON, September 8 /PRNewswire/ --
A breakthrough method has been found to reduce the dangerous side-effects of a medicine that successfully tackles epilepsy, according to research released at the British Pharmaceutical Conference (BPC) in Manchester. Epilepsy is an incurable condition which causes people to suffer repeated seizures caused by a burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It affects about one in 30 people in the UK.(1)
Anti-epileptic medicines such as valproic acid help stabilise the electrical activity in the brain and prevent seizures in most epilepsy patients. Its use is restricted due to rare, but potentially life-threatening side effects, such as toxic liver damage, stomach ulcers and serious inflammation of the pancreas.
Pharmacy researchers combined amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) with the valproic acid, and this combination medicine significantly reduced the likelihood of valproic acid causing liver damage or ulcers. Amino acids are found in normal foods, and have a healing effect on gastric irritation.
The research team is also investigating whether the valproic acid combination medicine has any potential as an anti-cancer therapy.
Lead pharmacy researcher, Dr Sushant Kumar Shivastava, Department of Pharmaceutics, Banaras Hindu University, India, said: "Valproic acid is powerfully effective against different kinds of epilepsy and we are confident this research breakthrough represents a major future improvement for patients with epilepsy." Notes to editors
The British Pharmaceutical Conference 2008 (BPC)
BPC 2008: Pharmacy in the 21st Century: Adding years to life and life to years. In 2008, as the NHS marks its 60th anniversary year, BPC will examine how pharmacy and the pharmaceutical services are helping to add years to life and life to the year of the UK population. The profession of pharmacy plays an important role in meeting the healthcare challenges associated with the UK's ageing population.
How can pharmacists contribute to caring for the population as well as ensuring quality of life? Increasingly, scientists and practitioners have to consider the cost implications of this conundrum, and the evidence base for all interventions is becoming of paramount importance: BPC 2008 will debate these issues and open up discussion on them. Study makes epilepsy medicine safer
Tuesday 9th September 2008

The dangerous side-effects of a drug used to control epilepsy could be reduced with the use of a new treatment.
Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disorder that is characterised by recurrent unprovoked seizures. These seizures are caused by a burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is incurable and affects about one in 30 people in the UK.
Medicines such as valproic acid can stabilise the electrical activity in the brain and prevent seizures in many epilepsy patients. But it has been found to cause toxic liver damage, stomach ulcers and serious inflammation of the pancreas. This means its use is often limited to extreme cases.
Researchers from Banaras Hindu University, in India, have now combined amino acids with valproic acid. In this form the risk of the valproic acid causing liver damage or ulcers is greatly reduced, the British Pharmaceutical Conference (BPC) in Manchester heard.
Lead pharmacy researcher, Dr Sushant Kumar Shivastava, said: "Valproic acid is powerfully effective against different kinds of epilepsy and we are confident this research breakthrough represents a major future improvement for patients with epilepsy."

Helping victims of Bihar flood-A noble work by Rajesh Ranjan (Mechanical 2003)

Recent flood in the state of Bihar has created a misery on a large scale to the people for the state. Many relief work organization and individuals have come forward to help the flood victims and displaced persons. Among them is our alumnus Rajesh Ranjan (Mechanical 2003), who started organizing help with the help of his friends and relief organizations. His appeal for help and list of NGO’s is posted on our website,
(Rajesh Ranjan)
Here is what Rajesh has to say about the relief work by him and others:
------------------------------------
Thanks for your appreciation. It is really nice to have support of our alumni in the effort to provide relief to the victims of Bihar deluge. The flood is not the annual localized one. It happened due to the breach by Kosi river at Kusaha, Nepal and things have become worse as it could have been in the districts of Supaul, Saharsa, Araria, Madhepura, Purnea, Katihar and some adjoining areas.
The govt. is working and relief is also pouring in, though people at far areas are not much responsive as they are not aware of the magnitude of the devastation and are in the impression that every year there will be floods in those areas.
We are working and many other local NGOs are also with us. One organization (Jawaab) working for RTI is also contributing to this effort.
Siddharth Arora (Mech 2003) and Ranjeev (Chem 2004) are also supporting in their own way. A team of doctors (from Institute of Medical Sciences-BHU) has also gone to the flood-affected region. Many IT-BHU students are putting efforts as well.
As I am located in Hyderabad right now, I had discussions with my colleagues at BHEL and other friends working in different organizations. We also had interactions with the students of University of Hyderabad and they have started collection of cash and kind in their campus.
We are also in touch with NGOs like Goonj (for clothes), Prayaas, Alternative Realities, Lakshya to provide necessary support to their relief works.
We have received contributions from abroad also. Some PhD students of Biotechnology in Germany and Switzerland have donated cash for our support. My idea is not to go for a collection drive for either money or items. The main objective is to make people aware that a huge population (>3 million) is badly affected due to Kosi waters. We need to empathise with them and be of some help to their struggle to survive.
It will take time for things to get back to normal and the people need us through their journey to a decent life. Hope to be with them…
Please mail me if you need any specific information.

Workosaur.com-website for Corporate-level hiring-by Nimish Adani (Chemical 2001)
Chronicle Editor @ Sep 27, 2008
view in one page and print

This website was launched on August 24, 2008 by our alumnus Nimish Adani (Chemical 2001).
It is a unique website, catering to the needs of recruitment needs for corporate-level executives, such as, Company President, CEO, Director, etc.
(Nimish Adani)
Workosaur.com is a free job board for senior positions i.e. jobs that pay more than Rs. 10+ lacs per annum. Unlike the other job sites, workosaur.com truly focus on aggregating the most lucrative jobs in India and overseas - Corporate-level, vice president, director and manager positions. Workosaur.com explicitly asks employers to use the job board only for positions for which they can afford to pay more than Rs. 10 lacs per annum. Hence, the site would be of great use to the professionals who are seeking to move up the career ladder. The site name is derived from “dinosaur at workplace”
Special features of the website
Although the site has been launched recently, it is loaded with many useful features. The site posts senior level jobs in different categories, such as, Finance, Consulting, Marketing, HR, etc. The job can also be searched by key word search for the company. About 800 jobs are currently posted on the website.
The site has a career Advice blog, which gives advice on topics ranging from “how to tie a tie” to “how to answer Guesswork type questions during interview”. It has also a career Advice forum, in which readers can post and freely discuss topics related to jobs or of everyday life.
Future Plans-as discussed by Nimish with Chronicle
The site (workosaur.com) is going to be free for job-seekers and employers for the first 1-year. The entire focus till then is to make it the most preferred online destination for middle-level and senior-level management. Those interested in advertising could send me an email at:
nimish@workosaur.com.
Going ahead, I'd like to diversify vertically in the online recruitment space by kick starting jobsites in niche domains. Also, plans are afoot for a whole set of interesting dot com ideas and these can be followed at
inboxofideas.com.
Nimish has the following message for the engineering students
“The different modules on
workosaur.com are built on open source platforms. Since a large pool of developers is collaborating on the open source platforms,
workosaur.com stands to leverage the latest Web 2.0 technologies and evolve into a truly useful site for its users. Also having seen the power of such collaborations, I wish to advise every student in the software domain to be an active part of an open source community. More than anything else, it is an enriching experience and would foster the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst the students.”
