(Forwarded by: Viswanath Nittala (B. Tech. Electrical Engineering, Part II), Event coordinator, “Possibility Search- The champion in every ITBHUite”, Kashi Yatra team. He can be contacted at: n.viswanath.eee07@itbhu.ac.in)
This January ITians had to fight bitter cold. So to heat ourselves up; we came up with Kashiyatra ‘09! Boys and girls danced, laughed and did stuff to increase circulation in their frigid veins. The event saw great show of tempo and energy by students, organizers and coordinators (although the tedious ones were outsourced to the ‘fucchas’!) and the people in the background who made it a roaring success. Among all these energy and color, most of us get lost and have no time for self-introspection or any inkling of what to do in future. So the organizers thought that someone had to be sent to bring purpose in our rather aimless lives.
This is where Subham Basu and Jagat Rathore enter the scene. Subham Basu is our alumnus (Ceramic 2002 batch). He is presently a noted columnist in The Indian Express; and a corporate trainer; Jagat Rathore, his colleague and close friend is a NLP Master Practitioner and Executive coach. On Jan 24th in G-11 hall, the speech was scheduled to start at 10:30 in the Saturday morning but started at 11:00 AM because only few people showed up in the first place. This was a boon in disguise because the audience had more one-to-one interactions which would not have been possible if say 200 people had showed up. Plus the other lazy ITians never knew what they were missing!
Subham and Jagat then began the brainstorming session that broke some of our notions and created new ones. Jagat started off with Helen Keller, the famous blind and deaf woman who in spite of all her difficulties could achieve heights that even a normal person with two pairs of eyes could not. He asked us “How many of you have decided what to do in our life?” Except a guy who had decided to own the next big roller-coaster no one else present had given it a serious thought (of the nature that you write your aims on a piece of paper). He asked us to take inspiration from our founder Madan Mohan Malaviya who collected 50 lakh rupees in those times to set up this university. Malaviya Ji did a ‘Possibility Search’ in the cesspool of British Empire and created a lotus in it. His speech contained interesting facts and were peppered with personal anecdotes.
After Jagat’s enlightening ‘interaction’ (saying ‘speech’ would be injustice); Subham took over and shared his views on how to tackle completion and be a winner in the race of life. He gave us an interesting presentation and showed us a video clip of Cliff Meidl survived 30,000 volt shock in a freak construction accident that had burnt his knee caps .He survived three cardiac arrests before he could be operated on. Doctors said his legs had to be amputated. But Dr. Malcolm Lesavoy said no. He did a ‘Possibility Search’ and figured out a way. Fifteen surgeries and two years later Cliff started walking without clutches. And in the year 2000 he bore the American Flag at the Olympic Games!
Subham then explained 5 magic steps to build a successful carrier which I am not going to reveal of course. (Such things should not be common knowledge after all. It gives you the edge!).
Well, time trickles by as it always does and so the talk ended on a positive note and we hope that everyone took something from this workshop that they are going to remember and put it into action for the rest of their life.

(This article is forwarded by Abhinav Bansal, B. Tech. Mechanical Engineering, Part II student at IT-BHU. Abhinav Bansal is actively involved in volunteering work through Kashi-Utkarsh. He can be contacted at: abhinav.bansal2607@gmail.com)

Let us for once think the special reason of our existence. We do not mean to answer but to put before all our compatriots this question. If someone would ask what Kashi Utkarsh is for me, I will not simply answer the quest rather I will say “For me Kashi Utkarsh is an endeavour to compensate the quid-pro-quo of social inequality prevailing in our society”. I will not be exaggerating if I write that I am doing my so called services as a KU member.
Submitting this article would have been easier & quicker for me if I was not involved in KU works, as I would have simply given a report like thing after searching and interviewing the related people. In fact I tried to adopt the simple way only but could not restrain myself from expressing my own views. Here is a modest attempt to introduce our organization to our community.
Kashi Utkarsh is a student run social organization of the Institute of Technology which has been working for the alleviation of misery, penury and disease in its adopted village of Lehartara, Varanasi. It was in 1997 when two IT students Anupam Bansal and Vinod Chowdhary firmly decided to work for the welfare of poor and backward children of the society and thus established a social group of IT students with the name Kashi Utkarsh. Afterwards Prof. B B Bansal helped Kashi Utkarsh a lot especially in opening boarding school in Susuwahi Basti with the name Utkarsh Bhawan. Prof B B Bansal is currently acting as the patron for the group and helping them in every possible way. Following the trends, their juniors worked with the same spirit and it can be called the good fortune of KU and the children of Basti that from then till now these adolescents have always procured someone or other to be called “Bhaiyaji”. Currently around 30 volunteers from IT are working for the upliftment of these people
KU people very well know what will attract the worthy readers and so they don’t forget to describe the activities of KU in which the money of IT community is being utilized.
Keeping in mind the objectives laid down by the alumni, following works are done in KU:
1) 173 students studying in 3 different schools of Lehartara are being funded by Kashi Utkarsh in this session. It includes 107 students in Sarasvati Shiksha Niketan; 43 in Gyan Sagar; 23 in Ravidas School.
The admission procedure is like this: KU volunteers visit the houses of these children and enquire whether guardians are in a condition to pay the fees or not. This way they get assured that their money is going in the hands of actual needy. One of our alumni says that the objective behind adopting this village was not to fund them lifelong but to make the inhabitants self-dependent. We want them to realize their responsibilities towards their wards and KU is gradually moving towards its goals.
2) A fair part of KU money is employed in providing free books to the KU funded students. In certain cases where it is required, KU also provide school uniforms so that the decorum of the school is maintained.
3) Among these students, some are selected for coaching of Navodaya Entrance Examinations. Special classes are organized for them and they are provided with trained teachers. Every year, 4-5 students get admissions in different classes of Navodaya School.
4) To make the Basti people self-dependent KU has regularly done something or other. This year they are opening a “Silai Prashikshan Centre” in the basti with 4 stitching machines already bought for the purpose.
5) (i) KU has provided financial aid for the operation of leg deformation of Guddu, a boy from Lehartara and for treatment of brain tumor of Manish, a boy in De hostel mess in the year 2004. Now these children are enjoying their lives as their normal brothers and sisters.
(ii) Kashi Utkarsh took up the case of Pinky, a 6 year old girl of Lehartara Basti who was diagnosed with suffering from congenital heart disease i.e. a hole in the heart. She got treatment at Narayan Hridayalay, Bangalore on 5th March,’04 which cost around 1 Lakh Rupees, wholly contributed by IT-students and alumni.
(iii)Laxmi’s burnt leg was treated with the help of KU.
(iv) A 13 year old girl named Gauri was provided with medical treatment for her illness of lungs.
6) Nineteen children working in the mess of IT hostels (2 of other faculty hostels) are taught daily at Mousi’s (wife of Prof. A. K. Mukherjee) place by girls of IT. These children are given rewards on the basis of their regularity and performance. Maharaj of the respective messes are also given some useful gifts.
7) Medical check-up is done in Basti every year with the support from the Institute of Medical Sciences-BHU. Blood Donation Camps are also organized in IT campus.
8) With the help of alumni, KU also fund those students of the Basti which show interest in studying after completing their class VIII from these schools. The parents of the girl students are especially persuaded for this purpose. This year 6 students have got admissions in different UP Board or even the English Medium schools of the city out of which 4 are girls. All their academic expenses will be borne by KU. So, KU basically wants alumni to fund these students.
9) Cultural and Sports Day are celebrated every year as a trend in these schools where the IT students show their organizing and management potentials. Moreover KU arranges picnic and educational tour for these students to enhance their practical knowledge.
In spite of all such appreciable efforts by KU members, this social group has never got admiration or such recognition which is delightfully enjoyed by any other cultural, technical or sports group of the institute. Actually the KU volunteers don’t have any grievances because they don't measure themselves by what they have accomplished, but by what they should have accomplished with their ability.
KU needs around Rs. 8,000 per month to carry out all their activities and still they find themselves in need of more help. To help KU you can contact Abhinav Bansal.
Recently during a weekly visit to the Basti, a person asked us that “Bhaiyaji, what do you get in return for working in Kashi Utkarsh i.e. you must be at least getting some certificate sort of thing”. We said “Nothing we get” and just recalled the lines of great social worker Robert Frost,
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the less traveled by and that has made all the difference.”
