Symposium on rock mechanics at BHU

12 Feb 2009, 2043 hrs IST, TNN

VARANASI: The three-day international symposium on rock mechanics and geo-environment in mining and allied industries began at Banaras Hindu University on Thursday. Addressing the inaugural function, president of a power company VK Singh said that the country needed safe and economically viable exploitation of minerals, and there was a growing need for implementation of environment friendly measures for mining.

Saying that there is immense scope for developing Institute-Industry Partnership for finding methods to reduce adverse impact on environment, he added that measures should be evolved for minimum destruction of natural resources at the mining site.

Earlier, highlighting the theme of the symposium, coordinator prof BK Srivastava said that the program would cover almost every practical aspect of rock mechanics and geo-environment ranging from rock fragmentation, reinforcements and stabilization of structures to prediction and management of ground vibrations, flyrocks and airblasts besides impact of mining excavation on ground water and air.

The convener of the program, SK Sharma from the department of mining engineering, Institute of Technology (IT) BHU, said that the advent of computers and numerical modelling had enabled engineers to design customised dams and mines.

Dean, faculty of Engineering and Technology, IT, BHU, Prof V Singh stressed on the need of knowledge of allied disciplines including hydraulics and fluid mechanics for mining engineers to design environment friendly and stable structures on the occasion. Director IT (BHU) prof SN Upadhyaya, department head of mining engineering prof NC Karmakar and other senior faculty members of IT (BHU) were also present on the occasion.
