Biography of Dr. Radha Shelat in Data Quest magazine, June 2005:

Queen of Technology

 Monday, June 27, 2005

Radha Shelat is synonymous with Veritas Software. After all this statistician from IT BHU (she did her PhD in probability theory) has been an active member of the core India leadership team that has spearheaded its growth from a four-member organization to over 1,000 people currently. Today the Pune-based Veritas Software is the largest R&D center globally for the $2.4 bn Veritas Software, one of the 10 largest software companies in the world.

Hailing from a conservative and traditional Gujarati family settled in Varanasi did not prevent her parents from ensuring that she gets the best education. As a student, Shelat also did well in sports-she was part of the University team in badminton and table tennis, and even played in the district basketball team. "But, in our society, it is important to get your focus back to education," she sighs.

She moved to Mumbai in 1987 when she got married and joined research at IIT Bombay. The next four years was devoted to research and some part-time consulting. Shelat's life changed in 1992, when she spotted an advertisement in the newspaper from Frontier Software, who were looking for people with Unix skills. "A work profile like the one I was offered at Frontier was something that was unimaginable outside the IITs at that time," Shelat recalls. Veritas later acquired Frontier and Shelat moved with her team of four to join Veritas Software India in 1994.

Shelat places high impetus on building a good core team that helps provide effective leadership to the product development teams. In fact, this has been her biggest challenge in the last 12 years. Veritas was not only a lesser-known name in the IT industry, the Pune address also played spoilsport. But that did not hamper her spirits and she personally accompanied the team during the initial years of recruitment. "Attracting the right people was the challenge, retention was not," says Shelat. Some of these people continue to work for Veritas today. The team got together and designed question papers for entrance tests, solving which was considered to be a big challenge even at the IITs till some time back.

Today, the difficult years are over. Shelat and her team-she insists she could not have done all this without the cooperation of her team at Veritas-have established a place for Veritas Software in India. But that's not enough for Radha Shelat. Her next goal is to build a strong team of independent thinkers and innovators who would make "invented in India" a reality. Currently, 30% of the annual global patents at Veritas come from India. She wants to see this figure rise significantly.

Shelat's success is especially noteworthy because one gets to see very few women in this field. "Women tend to struggle with personal and professional challenges," explains Shelat. "You also need a lot of perseverance and family support to continue in this field," she adds. Till a couple of years back, Shelat would only take time off from work when she would go trekking with her husband. But things are a little different now with the presence of their daughter Arundhati, 4, whom the couple has adopted recently. "It's so fulfilling to be a mother. I feel like a complete woman," says Shelat.

Nikesh Arora (Electrical 1989) Google's new sales boss

(Chronicle note: Nikesh Arora has been appointed by Google as President, Global Sales Operations and Business Development. He is the highest ranking and the most successful executive among our alumni.)

http://business.rediff.com/report/2009/apr/17/nikesh-arora-googles-new-sales-boss.htm

April 17, 2009

554-Nikesh Arora.png

                 (Nikesh Arora)

Tucked into the first quarter report that showed an 8.45 per cent increase in Google's net profitability was another announcement. Nikesh Arora, president, international operations and known for running Google Europe, would be replacing Omid Kordestsani, the current global sales boss.

This will make him the top-ranking Indian in Google.

Here's what the Google statement said:

'After ten years of building and managing our global sales and partnership operations, Omid Kordestani has decided to hand over the reins to Nikesh Arora, currently president of international operations, and take on a new role as senior advisor, office of the CEO and founders.

'Continued growth is essential to our future success and no one is better placed to advise on new revenue opportunities than Omid, the business founder of Google.

'In his new role as president, global sales operations and business development, Nikesh Arora will have responsibility for all Google's revenue and customer operations, as well as marketing and partnerships. He has a proven track record at Google, having spent the last four and a half years building our European operations into a substantial business.

Here's some more interesting info about Arora. The Independent reports that Arora, who is nearly 40, was recruited by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in an interview conducted among the artefacts of the British Museum.

'We walked around. We looked at the exhibits and a lot of our conversation was about the Rosetta stone,' says Arora, referring to an Egyptian artefact that dates to 196BC and is inscribed in three languages. The Greek wording enabled scholars to decipher the hieroglyphics and was a major breakthrough in Egyptology. Arora says: 'We discussed how it was an amazing parallel to Google translating its services around the world.'

As this informal interview concluded, Arora left the museum but Brin continued to tour the exhibits. Ten days later Arora learned that he had the job.

He was the first Google vice president to be appointed outside the US

Here's something else he told The Independent: 'I enjoy working in places which are very fast-moving and where things are changing. As my life takes on a steady pattern I do things to undo the pattern,' he says.

Before joining Google, Arora was chief marketing officer and a member of the management board at T-Mobile, where he's said to have spearheaded all product development, terminals, brand and marketing activities of T-Mobile Europe.

He started working with Deutsche Telekom in 1999 and founded T-Motion PLC, a mobile multimedia subsidiary of T-Mobile International. In his pre-Deutsche Telekom days, Nikesh held management positions at Putnam Investments and Fidelity Investments in Boston.

Arora holds a master's degree and CFA certification from Boston College, an MBA from Northeastern University and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Institute of Technology in Varanasi, India.

Times Online adds that Arora was born in Delhi to a father who was a financial planner for the Indian Air Force and a mother with a master's degree in mathematics. He left India at the age of 21 to study for an MBA in the United States.

Clearly, he didn't look back.

Introduction by Jaskirat Singh

Our website, http://myneta.info is aimed at voters and citizens of India to help them make an informed choice when they go out to vote. All the candidates are required to file an affidavit giving details of their pending criminal charges, past convictions, assets, liabilities and education with their nomination papers to the election commission. We are collecting copies of those affidavits from all over the country for the candidates of the current Lok Sabha elections, and making their data available to people and media in an easy to access and easy to understand format. The process of collecting affidavits, processing their data into reports and disseminating it via web, media, SMS campaigns is what we call Election Watch. Every state has an election watch group that manages it in the respective states. There are about 1200 NGOs in all who are involved all over India in this. Further this campaign has been supported by Aamir Khan whose "Sachhe ko Chuney, Achche ko Chuney" ads are being shown on various TV channels.

This website has been a smashing hit and has already served a huge numbers of visitors from India and abroad. Within first two weeks the total number of visitors has crossed six figures.

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) is an NGO which won PIL in the supreme court of India which resulted in these affidavits being made compulsory for candidates filing nominations. A lot more info on that is available on their website http://www.adrindia.org

I got involved with them first in 2007 when they wanted to do Punjab Election Watch for assembly elections and I volunteered for them during that. As I am a web developer running my own business, I thought it would be nice if we could create a web based data entry and reporting system which can make this information reach farther and faster. The reports generated from this software have been in the headlines in most national dailies from the past one month or so.  That database also feeds myneta.info.

I am presently also the North Zone Coordinator for the National Election Watch.

 I run www.webrosoft.com, a dot.com company

Thanks,

 Jaskirat Singh

About National Election Watch

The National Election Watch (NEW) is a nationwide campaign comprising of more than 1200 NGO and other citizen led organizations working on electoral reforms, improving democracy and governance in India.

National Election Watch is active in almost all states of India and has done election watch for all states and Lok Sabha elections since ADR, along with couple other organizations, won the PIL in Supreme Court in 2002 to making disclosure of educational, financial and criminal background of electoral candidates mandatory.

Lots of people around the country are questioning what our elected representatives do. Do you know what the responsibilities of our elected representatives are?

Although a few responsibilities of the elected representatives are defined, the fact is that their responsibilities are very fluid. In fact, citizens and voters of their constituency can and should approach them for any problem that affects general public – be it related to education, health, transport, or any issue affecting general public.

The purpose of this site is several folds:

* Give information on the elected representatives – everything that they give in their affidavits.

* Give information about a constituency – various human development index parameters.

* Give a chance to the general public to give comments on work done by their elected representatives.

* Rate various representatives based on peoples’ comments and improvement shown in their constituency during their tenure, etc.

* Feed this feedback back to your elected representative, so that he has a chance to work on the feedback received from his constituency.

Get started by clicking here to find out more about your representatives and comment on how he/she is doing.

About ADR

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) is a Non-Political, Non-Partisan and a Non-Governmental Organization whose PIL filed in Dec 1999 culminated in a Supreme Court order on Mar 13, 2003 requiring disclosure of criminal, financial and educational background of all contesting candidates. Since then ADR has done Election Watches in almost all State Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

ADR continues to works towards strengthening democracy and governance in India by focusing on fair and transparent electoral and political processes. It is currently conducting election watch is all states going for assembly polls. You can learn more about ADR at: www.adrindia.org

THE WEBSITE http://myneta.info GIVING CONTESTING CANDIDATES

INFORMATION A SMASHING HIT SAYS NATIONAL ELECTION WATCH

New Delhi, April 27, 2009 - MYNETA.INFO has been a smashing hit, with the number of visitors crossing into six digits within the first two weeks of its launch. This website presents profiles of all candidates contesting Lok Sabha 2009 elections all over India based on contents of their affidavits.

What most visitors found exceptional about this website was not only that it provides full details of pending criminal charges, convicted cases, asset details, liability details and education details of all candidates, but also the comparison charts for each constituency which they can use as a powerful aid in making an informed choice for their vote.

These charts have also been used by NGOs to print posters and leaflets for their constituencies for the benefit of those who do not use internet.

"We got more than twenty thousand visitors on 22nd April with page views surging to 3.5 lakh, which is the highest so far on any single day. From the day one of the launch of this website we have been flooded with hundreds of messages a day with feedback and comments which has been very encouraging." said Jaskirat Singh the architect of this website.

"It has been blogged about and linked to by scores of Bloggers and that has been a significant source of visitors. This has also spawned many discussions on various popular discussion forums and community websites like Orkut and Face Book. Other than that we have been getting a very big percentage of visitors from search engines who find myneta.info while searching on Google etc. for information about their constituencies and candidates." he added.

The candidate information from this website also feeds the replies to SMS queries generated by TV advertisements of "Sachhe ko Chuney, Achche ko Chuney" campaign by Aamir Khan.

Data presented on myneta.info is also being shared with a number of other websites on the internet which are using it in their own way in raising voter awareness like www.bharatvotes.org and the much talked about "Google 2009 Lok Sabha Elections - Be an Informed Voter!" Campaign.

ITBHUGlobal.org website receives Google Apps Education Edition
@ Apr 30, 2009
view in one page and print

(Forwarded by Animesh Pathak, CSE 2003. Email: Animesh@gmail.com)

We are pleased to state that website run by our alumni association has received approval from Google Apps Team through its email dated April 17, 2009.

The Google offer is for www.itbhuglobal.org, the official website for IT-BHU global Alumni Association. We are currently using Google Apps, but with limited numbers of accounts and features. Now, with our non-profit status and Google approval, we can have unlimited numbers of accounts and more features to use.

The institute’s website www.itbhu.ac.in already receives Google Apps services due to accredited educational institution status of IT-BHU. In fact, our institute was among the first institutes in India to use Google Apps. The institute’s website was set up with a dedicated group of alumni led by Anshuman Singh (Electrical 1998).

The approval is given by Google after we received tax-exempt status (as a non-profit organization) from Internal Revenue Service of US Government last month.

The best part is that now the Google Apps is free to us because of US Govt. granting us status as non-profit organization. Google Apps provides free service to recognized Educational Institutes and organizations with non-profit status.

About Google Apps:

The Google Apps service was launched in August 2006. Google Apps provides the users of a domain with large email boxes just like Gmail (which they can also read using outlook and mobile phones, and also forward to normal addresses). In addition, it also allows them to use shared documents and spreadsheets, much like you do today using Google docs.

The big part is - the users can now have IDs @itbhuglobal.org, and we can give proper email inboxes (with POP/IMAP/space) to ALL our members, as opposed to simple email redirection.

The users can also create their own small websites on a section of our website such as http://sites.itbhuglobal.org/ (this will be of interest to our future plan for providing users personal pages in version2 of the alumni website)

Google also allows programmatic access to these services, so we can easily integrate this with our existing alumni database system.

More info about Google apps for education (also for non-profits, currently being used in itbhu.ac.in) is at http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/index.html

Google app is a set of capabilities that are provided by Google as an online service.

These capabilities include

 1. Email accounts

2. Google Docs

3. Google Calendar etc. etc.

We can integrate these capabilities into our website; and all of that with the domain of itbhuglobal.org

All the mailing lists that we have today are managed via the Google email application; so all things like scholarships@itbhuglobal.org are being handled via Google and we don't have to do anything much on our servers.

Just for information, the entire official email of IT-BHU is run via Google Apps. All emails sent to xyz@itbhu.ac.in are actually handled by the Google system. It provides email facility for 3700+ people including all students, faculty and staff.

Helping students for summer internship
@ Apr 30, 2009
view in one page and print

Introduction:

The summer internship (or industrial training) is compulsory for the students in our institute. It is usually taken during summer break after 3rd year. However, because of the practical advantage of training in understanding the subject and for future career growth, students try to take training also after 2nd year or even after 1st year of study.

The summer internship is a burning question for our students, since it is compulsory and they are more worry of getting it than getting a job later. With number of students increasing each year at our institute and limited number of offers available from companies due to current economic downturn, any help shall be useful to students. In fact, many students get internship through sponsorship by alumni owned or managed companies.

Last year we admitted 600 students to our institute. In next 3 years, it will go up to 925 students after implementation of 54% OBC quota. That means 1850 students (counting both 2nd and 3rd year) competing for internships in the area of their interest and locations. This does not include students desire to get training after completion of 1st year.

As a first step, our alumni volunteers have contacted some of the alumni requesting to provide internship to their companies. Most of the internship is currently provided through TPO (Training & Placement Office) of our institute. Since internship/training is part of curriculum, all requests must finally go through our TPO.

The second and third year students will finish their semester exams by around the 10th of May (latest), and are advised to start with their internships immediately after that. For students left over without any training/internship in hand, we have provided the list of companies (mostly IT companies) who are still willing to take few students. The list is also posted on our website:

http://www.itbhuglobal.org/angels/archives/2009/04/internships.php

The list is only partial list showing the still vacant positions, as most of the slots are already filled up in other companies. We advise our students to search for internship few months in advance. We shall publish more articles on summer internship with much more details later this year.

At the end, we have produced a news item about internship problem being handled by IIT-Bombay for its students. I hope it will be useful to our students and readers.

IIT-B start-ups a big hit with students

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1249273

Mihika Basu

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 2:39 IST

Mumbai: Harsh Shah, a third year Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay student is all set to intern in a start-up, an experience he says will enable him to sharpen his entrepreneurship skills. He is one of the 100 students who had registered for "start-up interns", a platform to create summer internship opportunities for the institute's third year B. Tech and dual degree students.

"The work profile of an intern in a big company is usually at a superficial level. On the other hand, profiles in a start-up are more in-depth, so it's better from the learning point of view," said Shah.

Nearly two weeks after the initiative was launched by IIT-Bombay's Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell), 15 students have already been placed.

"Students are very happy that we initiated this event. About 100 students registered. There are 65 openings and so far 15 students have been selected. The interviews are on in full swing and the process will take another three weeks," said T Manoj, media manager, E-Cell.

The initiative was aimed at fostering entrepreneurship among students. The idea was also to benefit students in this slowdown. Around 30% of the students at the institute are still looking for internships, said Manoj.

Now students like Shah are using the platform as an opportunity to opt for different profiles. A student of metallurgical engineering, he will handle marketing and corporate communications.

"You take decisions as an entrepreneur when you work in a start-up. And since I want to set up my own venture, it'll help me acquire necessary skill sets," said Shah.

About 32 companies are participating. The openings are in core engineering, marketing, business strategising, finance and web development.

Rahul Singh, founding member of Ideaforge (start-up), said that the initiative provided a perfect and convenient platform for students and start-ups to connect. "Since a large group could apply, we could evaluate a better set of people than we could have otherwise done," said Singh.

Pravesh Dudani, director co-founder of GreenHat Ventures (start-up), said that cost is a crucial factor for start-ups. "Instead of hiring people on a long-term basis, we can hire interns for a short period, make them work on challenging projects while giving them the freedom to be innovative."
