Vedic Alternative to Evolution - a Seminar by Dr. Michael A. Cremo

(Forwarded by: Aviral Srivastava, B. Tech. Part-I, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Email: avirals1@hotmail.com)

A seminar on “Human Devolution : A Vedic alternative to Darwin’s theory” was addressed by Dr. Michael A Cremo on 11th April, 2009 at G-14 hall on campus, celebrating Darwin’s bicentenary and 150 years of publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species. The lecture was attended by Prof. S.K. Sharma (Dean of Students, BHU), Prof. J.P. Dwivedi (Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering, IT-BHU), Dr. Debashish Khan (Faculty, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IT-BHU), Dr. Vibha Tripathi (Department of Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology, BHU) and numerous students.

Dr. Cremo has done extensive research in Human origins and his work, translated into 20 languages, has often been described as unique and provocative. Having lectured at The Royal Institute in London, The International Congress of History and Science and The Darwin Museum in Moscow, he is currently on a tour of India, where he has already lectured at prestigious institutions like Indian Institute of Science, Delhi College of Engineering, BITS Pilani, IIT-Bombay and IIT-Madras.

Dr. Cremo acknowledged the role of our institute in the history of India’s intellectual growth. He challenged the theory of survival of the fittest, claiming that men are more than mere patterned machines in competition. Darwin’s theory states that mankind emerged on this planet around 150,000 years ago. Having done extensive research on the Puranas - the Hindu religious scriptures, Dr. Cremo argued that mankind has been in existence for over 300 million years and presented several findings and arguments to support his claim. He asserted that beings exist on three levels as per the Puranas -body, mind and consciousness. Devolution is the process by which pure consciousness is covered by the lower energies of the body and mind. However, he admitted that science will have to evolve to a level of spirituality before his ideas can be accepted. He recognized that a vast majority of scientists accept the theory of evolution but also advocated that a theistic alternative to evolution be included in the academic curriculum.

Dr. Vibha Tripathi also shared her views on Devolution. The seminar was enlightening which exposed its participants to new ideas. The vote of thanks to Dr. Cremo and the participants of the seminar was read by Prof. J. P. Dwivedi.

Saari-Raat Play on campus-The report
@ Apr 30, 2009
view in one page and print

(Report forwarded by Mohit Modi, Part-III Biochemical Engineering ; Devender Singh Maun, Part II Ceramic Engineering and Praharsh Sharma, Part III Electronics Engineering)

'Saari-Raat', a play by Badal Sircar was performed by students on April 5, 2009 at G-11 at 05:30 pm. The play was beautifully performed by the cast. The casting was flawless, the stage-setting grand and the make-up professional.  The performance was well-appreciated by the huge audience as was evident from the generous ovation.

The play was focused around three characters that coincidentally spend a night together which changes their life. Embedded poems with beautiful music composition were appreciated. A vote of thanks was given to the alumni who helped the team financially.

The play 'Saari-Raat' has helped IT-BHU theatre to reach a new level of professionalism and maturity. The play is based on the times of late 70s and is the story of a 28 year old married lady trying to find her true love even after being 7 years in marriage.  The play starts with a Bengali couple arriving at an abandoned, broken house to take shelter from the rainy night. They soon come to find that they were not alone and a strange old man appeared out of nowhere claiming to be the owner of the house. As the play continued, the character of the old man kept getting stranger as he seemed to know everything about this couple, things that even the husband was unaware of.  However, the lady comes to have a feeling of déjà vu every time the old man tells her something about her life, her marriage and she feels that the he knows a lot more about her. May be he knows why she gets this feeling of emptiness in her life and why, every time she gets up in the middle of the night and sits by the window, thinking and maybe he finally knows the answer to all her anxious questions. May be he is the one she has been searching for 28 years, maybe he is her RANJAN.

The biggest challenge in the performance of the play proved to be its biggest advantage i.e. the play has only three characters - the lady, her husband and the old man. There are no names in the script except RANJAN and the three characters are referred as stree, purush and vrradh. The play stretching to about 1 hour 45 minutes does not have a definitive ending as Badal Sircar left the play at its highest point leaving it to the audience’s imagination to conclude.
