'Saari-Raat', a play by Badal Sircar was performed by students on April 5, 2009 at G-11 at 05:30 pm. The play was beautifully performed by the cast. The casting was flawless, the stage-setting grand and the make-up professional. The performance was well-appreciated by the huge audience as was evident from the generous ovation.
The play was focused around three characters that coincidentally spend a night together which changes their life. Embedded poems with beautiful music composition were appreciated. A vote of thanks was given to the alumni who helped the team financially.
The play 'Saari-Raat' has helped IT-BHU theatre to reach a new level of professionalism and maturity. The play is based on the times of late 70s and is the story of a 28 year old married lady trying to find her true love even after being 7 years in marriage. The play starts with a Bengali couple arriving at an abandoned, broken house to take shelter from the rainy night. They soon come to find that they were not alone and a strange old man appeared out of nowhere claiming to be the owner of the house. As the play continued, the character of the old man kept getting stranger as he seemed to know everything about this couple, things that even the husband was unaware of. However, the lady comes to have a feeling of déjà vu every time the old man tells her something about her life, her marriage and she feels that the he knows a lot more about her. May be he knows why she gets this feeling of emptiness in her life and why, every time she gets up in the middle of the night and sits by the window, thinking and maybe he finally knows the answer to all her anxious questions. May be he is the one she has been searching for 28 years, maybe he is her RANJAN.
The biggest challenge in the performance of the play proved to be its biggest advantage i.e. the play has only three characters - the lady, her husband and the old man. There are no names in the script except RANJAN and the three characters are referred as stree, purush and vrradh. The play stretching to about 1 hour 45 minutes does not have a definitive ending as Badal Sircar left the play at its highest point leaving it to the audience’s imagination to conclude.
