India's T20 exit queers the pitch for advertisers

Ratna Bhushan & Meenakshi Verma Ambwani, ET Bureau

NEW DELHI: Knives are out for Mahendra Singh Dhoni & Co, with India crashing out of the Twenty20 World Cup, and advertisers are chewing their nails fearing a slump in viewership, but event broadcaster ESPN Star Sports is sitting pretty, having sold all the spots for the entire tournament at a premium.

“We do expect some attrition in ratings with India’s exit, but as far as commercial deals are concerned, we are sold out,” said ESPN Software India MD RC Venkateish.

551-cricketer.png

His firm had closed advertising deals at rates ranging from Rs 2.7 lakh to 4 lakh per 10 seconds, at least three weeks before the tournament kicked off, and only a few seconds are left to be picked up.

Advertisers who paid a 20-25 % premium over the previous Twenty20 World Cup to ESPN Star Sports (ESS) include Reliance Mobile, Hero Honda, PepsiCo, Reebok, Hewlett-Packard, Maruti, Perfetti, Nokia, Adani, Visa, LG Electronics and Max New York Life.

ESS is learnt to have earned close to Rs 180 crore from the tournament.

“Viewership ratings will be adversely impacted, with India now out of the tournament. But our arrangement with ESS is till 2015,” said Sanjay Behl, CEO of Big TV and head of Reliance Mobile’s branding and marketing operation.

From Beijing, a lesson for Delhi

Reshma Patil and Atul Mathur, Hindustan Times

Beijing/New Delhi, June 14, 2009

First Published: 01:42 IST(14/6/2009)

Last Updated: 02:06 IST(14/6/2009)

Every day, about 1,000 new cars hit the roads of both the capitals of India and China.

To decongest the capital, Delhi is struggling to build at least half, or 135 km of the third ring road by next May.

A six-hour flight away, Beijing is struggling to make commuters stop using the six ring roads — and building the world’s biggest subway network set to surpass that of London and New York.

As both capitals grapple with a 17 million-strong population each and the problem of how to keep it moving, the message from China is that badly planned ring roads create congestion if they don’t allow easy access to public transport nodes.

“The danger is, unless you are very careful, the ring road will induce land development that will cause even greater congestion that will be harder to fix,’’ Shomik Mehndiratta, a senior transport specialist with the World Bank in Beijing, told Hindustan Times.

Beijing’s sixth ring road now slices the mountainous outskirts, but the capital’s latest problem is how to make commuters stop using these roads and ride the subway, buses or even bicycles. Since April, one-fifth of Beijing’s vehicles were ordered off the roads on weekdays in a system based on license plate numbers.

The officials who proposed Delhi’s third ring road agree the capital needs a strong public transport system.

“The peripheral expressway alone will not help decongest Delhi, but it will definitely keep non-destined commercial vehicles away,” Noor Mohammad, member-secretary of the National Capital Region Planning Board told HT.

“Along with peripheral expressways and an orbital rail system, we need a strong public transport system so that people leave behind their private vehicles and travel by public transport,” he said.

Delhi’s metro lines are set to expand from 74 km today to 193 km by 2010 and another 112 km between 2010-15. By 2015, Beijing’s subway tracks will grow from over 200 km today to 561 km.

But just expanding the metro lines is not enough. The newly rich commuters living around Beijing’s six ring roads don’t want to park the car and sweat to work. “For most people in Beijing, the commute is not a simple matter of a subway ride with a walk at each end,” pointed out Mehndiratta. “It involves an inconvenient mix of a walk to a bus-stop, bus ride, metro ride, probably a metro transfer and a taxi/bus ride at the end.’’

Singapore, not Beijing, has the best example of a ring road, said Mehndiratta, pointing out it was one of Singapore’s last pieces of infrastructure put in place after urban development was concentrated around public transport nodes.

“Singapore first focused on carefully aligning road and urban rail corridors and paid careful attention to urban design, to ensure that public transport was always a more convenient option than cars even for the rich,’’ he said.

Beijing did not foresee that residents living around the new ring roads would help China become the world’s biggest car market this year. New cars in Beijing will soon need 60 sq km parking space, equal to area within the second ring road. China’s capital has come full circle.

Reveal admission test marks, CIC tells FMS

Email: nduhan@gmail.com

NEW DELHI: The dean of Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University has been served a show cause notice by the Central Information Commission (CIC) for not furnishing information under RTI regarding the marks break-up of students admitted to its MBA programme.

The RTI was filed by the student who had topped the FMS written test in 2008 but could not make it to the flagship management programme as his extempore, interview and GD marks were not good enough. CIC has asked FMS to give the information sought - an order that may force B-schools across the country to disclose their admission test marks break-ups too or be flooded with RTIs.

CIC has asked the Public Information Officer (PIO) to explain why penalty should not be levied under Section 20 (1). The commission held dean J K Mitra (deemed PIO) guilty of not furnishing information within the time specified has said that it raises doubt about the refusal being malafide. The order came in response to the student's appeal.

On April 9, 2008 Nitesh Duhan, a MBA (Management Services student) of the 2010 batch filed an RTI seeking information on written, group discussion (GD), extempore and personal interview (PI) marks of each of the candidates who were admitted to the MBA programme. The DU registrar who is the first appellate authority had asked FMS to give the information to the PIO by July 31, 2008 so that the appellant gets it by August 14, 2008.

On May 6, 2008 Duhan received a reply stating that information is denied under section 8 (1) (j) as "disclosure of the same to the applicant can be objected to by the candidates concerned.'' It came with a copy of the merit list for the MBA MS programme. Duhan then approached the DU registrar on June 3, 2008.

"Despite the order I received no information and I told this to the FAA in February 2009. I wrote three more applications, the last one on March 25, 2009. Finally I was provided given a copy of the MBA merit list on March 31, 2009 but there was still no break-up of marks,'' said Duhan.

The CIC notice (Times City has a copy) said: "It is also apparent that in spite of the clear order of the FAA to give the information by August 14, 2008, the information had not been provided to the appellant until March 31, 2009. The respondents were asked to explain the reasons for this and it appears from their statements that dean, FMS had taken a position that this information could not be given. All officers in public authority have to understand that they are bound to obey the laws and the structures thereof. It appears that Professor

J K Mitra, dean, FMS has taken a position to defy the order of the FAA under RTI.''

In its decision allowing the appeal CIC said that the PIO will give the information mentioned before June 15, 2009. The CIC said: "From the facts before the Commission it is apparent that the deemed PIO Professor J K Mitra, dean FMS, is guilty of not furnishing information within the time specified under sub-section (1) of Section 7 by not replying within 30 days, as per requirement of the RTI Act. He has further refused to obey the orders of his superior officer, which raises a reasonable doubt that the denial of information may also be malafide. The FAA has clearly ordered the information to be given.''

Mitra refused to comment. But FMS sources say the admission committee would soon meet to discuss the reply to the notice.

Endowed Fellowships-Manoj Sinha (Electronics 1999)

Endowed Fellowships

Great universities, and great departments within great universities, make their mark on the world by training graduate students. Financial support for graduate students therefore represents a powerful pressure point for achieving excellence at the University of Virginia. By meeting this one need, donors will generate a multiplier effect that results in improved faculty hiring, better teaching, increased grant support, and higher productivity in our research activities. There are few more effective ways to transform the institution.

555-manoj sinha.png

Manoj Sinha: Fueling the Future

Email: manoj.sinha@lycos.com

Thomas Wolfe was wrong: You can go home again.

Manoj Sinha left home in Bihar, India, about a decade ago to study electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University. He earned a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and took a job at Intel Corporation in Austin, Texas.

For two years, he led a global team that was designing the company's smallest computer chip, the Intel Atom processor.

"At one point I learned that, because of hostilities [between Israel and Lebanon in the summer of 2006], the people in Israel were working on this product on their laptops in bunkers," he said. "That was extremely humbling."

His experience at Intel, which helped him sharpen some skills, also gave him insight into skills he lacked. "I knew I needed to know how to lead people of different cultures and be able to communicate with people from different mindsets," he said.

The case method, small classes, and a close-knit community brought Mr. Sinha to Charlottesville for the MBA at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. The school has helped him in many ways, large and small. Among these is financial support.

In the spring of 2008, Mr. Sinha was one of four Darden students who won a prestigious Genovese Fellowship—a $45,000 award that covers the cost of the second year of an MBA degree. Frank Genovese (Darden '74), president of Rothbury Corporation, a Richmond-area investment company, has provided $1.5 million in fellowships to forty-five Darden students over the past seventeen years.

The awards are designed to support students with entrepreneurial ambitions. Mr. Sinha fits that profile.

Before arriving at Darden, he and a classmate, fellow engineer Gyanesh Pandey, designed a power generator fueled by rice husks for use in developing countries. Their project was a response to the situation in the eastern "Rice Belt" of their native India, a largely rural area, off the national power grid, where farmers grew a lot of rice while piles of husks sat around unused.

The power plants generate electricity by burning rice husks, producing a gas that runs an engine. One plant generates enough power to reach four hundred houses, one hundred farms, and ten businesses, such as flour or rice mills, or a water-purification system.

Originally, the pair had planned to establish power plants using these generators in a few small villages in India. But at Darden, Mr. Sinha learned about the power of private equity.

"We can build a viable business to attract investors and not limit ourselves to four or five villages," said Mr. Sinha, who is now working with Darden classmate Charles "Chip" Ransler IV to raise $4 million in private equity for the project. "We can expand to 2,000 villages. I'm meeting people who have money they want to invest and who want to help people improve their lives."

The company they have created, Husk Power Systems, is designed to make money in three ways: by selling electricity to residential and commercial customers; by refining waste ash for use in the manufacture of cement; and by selling Certified Emission Reductions (CERs), carbon credits earned by reducing the production of carbon dioxide under the global Kyoto Protocol.

Still at an early stage, their company has won acclaim at university business competitions around the country.

Ultimately, Mr. Sinha envisions serving villages not only in India, but also in other developing countries with rural power needs, such as Indonesia, Cambodia, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

For now, he is content to return home, bringing new opportunities to rural villages through electrification and the economic development it makes possible, and affording hope for a better life among the people he once left behind.

Pradeep K. Chintagunta conducts research into the analysis of household purchase behavior, pharmaceutical markets, and technology products. "A lot of my early research was with scanner panel data trying to understand how consumers respond to different marketing activities of firms - prices, promotions, advertising, etc.," explained Chintagunta. "My research has expanded in two directions - one was to expand the domain beyond CPG products to pharmaceuticals and technology products and the other was to go beyond the consumer to other players in the broader 'ecosystem' to obtain a more holistic view of the effects of marketing."

Chintagunta is an area editor of Marketing Science, an associate editor of the Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, and Quantitative Marketing & Economics. Ogilvy India has bagged one Silver Lion Campaign for the entries ‘Cave-Man’, ‘Diver’ and ‘Tourist’ done for Perfetti Van Melle’s Sour Marbels Candies. Rediffusion Y&R has bagged a Bronze Lion Campaign for ‘Engineer’, ‘Housewife’ and ‘Tourist’ from the print campaign done for Bharti Airtel.

David Lubars, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, BBDO North America stated at the outset that the jury was very tough on the Press entries this year. He explained, “There has been significant talk on how there is superficial stuff that has been entered in awards, and what is the point of that in a year like this where everyone is cautious about what they are spending. You have to use this as a platform to show clients that when you do good work, ground breaking work, it holds everyone in good stead. The shortlist was much shorter than any year. We were clear that even a shortlist entry should mean something.”

Ogilvy India's Abhijit Avasthi, who was the Indian juror on Press LionsAvasthi stated that it was decent year for India. He added, “Crafting in Indian press entries have improved substantially, and that is one reason why we have two entries that have a Lion.”

In all there were 10 entries from India that had made it to the Press Lions’ shortlist.

The IIM-B Board has appointed a sub-committee headed by ITC Chairman Emeritus K L Chugh to chalk out a fund-raising plan towards this end.

The institute has already recruited a senior manager, with experience in fund-raising from international agencies for this purpose.
