Our entire IT-BHU community, including students, faculty, staff and alumni are working together towards the goal of making our institute an IIT. The University fraternity is by and large supportive for this issue.

The current status is as follows:

a) The BHU Executive Council has passed a fresh resolution on July 16, supporting upgradation of our Institute to IIT.

b) The Vice-Chancellor and Rector have on separate occasions in the University have announced that IT is going to be upgraded as IIT soon. It was also mentioned to the new entrants and their parents that they are going to get IIT degree.

c) The proposal for conversion of IT-BHU to IIT is being processed in MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development).  The relevant paperwork may take some more time. It is expected that the Union Cabinet will accord their approval soon. After the Cabinet approval, this is further expected to be placed in November Parliament Session

BHU Executive Council passes resolution during July 16 meeting in support of IT-BHU to IIT conversion

Since the earlier resolution dated 21st February 2009 did not completely meet govt. requirements for upgrade of IT-BHU to IIT, the Executive Council of Banaras Hindu University met again on Thursday July 16. The Council meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. D.P. Singh and attended by six (out of eight) council members. The resolution supporting the upgradation was passed was unanimously and the hurdles for converting our Institute to IIT has been removed.

We would take this opportunity to thank our Vice-Chancellor and all the EC members for supporting the upgradation and making a history in the evolution of an IIT in BHU.

Amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act is expected to be passed by the Parliament during its November Session, if all the formalities by that time is completed.  The name of our institute will be changed to IIT-BHU.

The Amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 could not be passed by the Parliament during July-August Session, which ended on August 07. This is because some formalities are still to be completed by the govt. The Institutes of Technology Act will be modified to include names of the eight new IITs being set up in the country, along with our institute.
