We are pleased to announce the chronicle August issue with a number of articles.
On the Home Page, the latest update on IIT conversion issue is discussed. We have posted obituaries of 3 of our alumni. Also published are the announcements for Pulse and Goonj magazine published by our student community.
On the News page (all pages are listed on top menu bar), we have published news about our institute, BHU, national education and about IITs.
On the reports page, we have published news about IIT conversion. Under Career section, we have published info about “Come & Learn” project to Practice Spoken English For Free-by University of Maryland
Under Campus View page, we have published several articles about our campus activities by IT-Gymkhana. It also contains the interview of Miss Srishti Didwania who is IIT-JEE topper for our institute for 2009-10 admission. It has also an article advising students to wear safety helmets while riding motorbikes.
On the Alumni World page, we have reported the alumni profile of Anshul Gupta for his Pro-Avenues venture for learning. The report is first ever meet of Texas Chapter is also published. Under alumni news section, we have published news media reports about five of our illustrative alumni (Mr. Ram Charan, Mr. Yugal Sikri and Dr. Prem Chand Jain.
The Interview page contains interview of three of our distinguished alumni. Prof. Akhlesh Lakhtakia (Electronics 1979) of Penn State University working in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics; Ms. Sreevidya P. (ECE 1992) who has started Business Infoware; and Arun Grover (Civil 2003) who has taken up script writing for film and TV industries.

The proposal for conversion of IT-BHU to IIT is being processed in MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development). The Telegraph India has reported that HRD Minister has signed the necessary paperwork for conversion of our institute to IIT.
It is expected that the Union Cabinet will accord their approval soon. After the Cabinet approval, this is further expected to be placed in November Parliament Session
Amendment to the Institutes of Technology Act is expected to be passed by the Parliament during its November Session, if all the formalities by that time is completed. The name of our institute will be changed to IIT-BHU.
The Institutes of Technology Act will be modified to include names of the eight new IITs being set up in the country, along with our institute.

The September 2009 issue of PULSE magazine is published. It is a campus magazine published by IT-BHU student volunteers. The 8-page colorful magazine contains a variety of articles (written and edited by students’ community), including news, interviews, sports, cartoons, etc.
The Pulse magazine is magazine is managed by a team of volunteers as listed on the front page of the magazine. Editor-in-chief for this (2009-10) session is Nandit Pathak, 3rd Ceramic Engineering. Email: nandoo1989@gmail.com.
Like the previous issues, this issue was printed and hundreds of print copies were distributed to departments, hostels and other public places of IT-BHU.

On a sad note, one of the active members of Pulse Team, Mr. Divya Jyoti Das (2nd year Metallurgy student) died in a tragic road accident after distributing Pulse issue print copies in the previous night. His obituary is published on the front page of this Chronicle issue.

With deep regret, we have to inform that Mr. Ranganathan Shankar breathed his last at 7.10 PM on 4th July 2009 at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. This also happens to be his wedding anniversary date.
He was diagnosed with a rare disease called 'amyloidosis' in late 2003. This is a rare condition in which amyloid proteins are abnormally deposited in organs and tissues affecting their functioning. Slowly all the vital organs of the body get affected and begin to fail. It always affects the kidneys first. There is no known cure for this deadly disease. Both his kidneys failed in Nov 2004 and he was on hemodialysis three times a week since then.
Cardiac arrest was said to be the cause of death, though the renal failure and continuous dialysis along with progress of amyloidosis that had affected most parts of his body including his intestines and blood vessels were the main culprits.
He was hopeful that someday organ transplant laws in this country will change and he will get out of this mess. But nothing happened he just waited in vain. He also hoped that one day he will recover and visit our college campus.
Profile
Mr. Shankar was born in Chennai on 8th March 1955. His father, late Shri K. Ranganathan, was IA & AS Officer. He completed his Senior Cambridge from St. Edmunds School, Shillong. He had brilliant academic career. After brief stint at a chemical company at Kota, Rajasthan, he joined IIM-Bangalore and got MBA degree in 1980. He also obtained SAP certification from SAP Germany in 2002.
After obtaining MBA, he worked as management trainee in Productivity Cell at Mukund Iron and Steel Works, Mumbai. He left the company in 1986.
After leaving Mukund in 1986, he joined Sriram Fibres Ltd, Chennai where from planning executive post he rose to the level of DGM. He left the company in 2001 and took up SAP. He got himself certified in the SD (Sales & Distribution) model thereafter taking up the exam conducted by SAP Germany. He was practicing as an independent SAP consultant from 2002 till 2004 and was also a SAP faculty with Siemens India.

He is survived by his wife Rajeshwari, daughter Aishwarya, son Anish, mother Mrs. Ranganathan and brother R. Shridhar.

- Younger Brother Shridhar (IIT-M and IIM-C) works in Bangalore
- Daughter Aishwarya is doing her PG in journalism at the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.

- Wife Rajeshwari is a practicing chartered accountant.

I read the news about Shankar's untimely demise with great sadness. Shankar was not only my classmate (Chemical, 1977) but also a member of one of our “discussion groups” at BHU where we spent many evenings discussing and debating every possible topic under the sun. Later we were colleagues at Shriram Chemicals in Kota where Shankar worked for a year before joining IIM-B. When I bought a scooter during that time Shankar helped me take its delivery and taught me how to ride it. After Kota our paths diverged, he going into the world of business in India and I, into the world of research in the US. Thanks to the 2007 reunion discussion initiated by Yogesh, Shankar and I reestablished e-mail contact; I still remember reading with a shudder the e-mail Shankar wrote to inform me about his illness. Fortunately I had to travel via Chennai in November 2007 and was able to stop by his residence and visit him and his mother. As usual he was very gracious and insisted that I have lunch with him. As in the past we talked about many different things. As usual he was very well informed and inquisitive about things. I still remember Shankar as an intelligent, physically and emotionally robust, and very gracious person, which makes his passing away all the more difficult to comprehend. I would like to convey my sincere condolences to his family and wish them the fortitude required to cope with this great loss.
September 19, 2009 5:17 PMIt is really sad to know the death of our class-mate, R. Shankar. He was always smiling and well-liked by us. He also topped GRE/TOEFL exams. Our batch of 1977 will surely miss him.

With deep regret we announce the demise of Prof. P. N. Kaula. He was a distinguished Librarian of our country and abroad. He classified and standardized Library and Information system.
A condolence meeting to mourn Prof. Kaula was organized on September 05, at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh (see additional links below).

(Below is the tribute paid to Prof. Kaula by Ratni and Siban Raina
Dear All:
A very sad news. Prof P N Kaula, Padma Shree, is no more with us. He left for his Heavenly journey on Sunday, August 30 at Lucknow. He was hail and healthy at 85, working on his subject passionately.
A doyen of library science, he was recipient of Padma Shree Award besides scores of other international honors and awards. In his name and honor, a few countries established international awards, given annually. More details can be found through Google search engine.
A true Karma Yogi who worked 18 hours daily as a teacher, philosopher, writer, editor, publisher, social worker, member and fellow of national and international bodies. He was one of the most sought after expert in library science world over. He glorified BHU and Indian intellect. Kashmiri Pandit community, the nation and the world have lost a great citizen.
He was one such individual who did not require our recommendations for heavenly aboard--Vidhata would have created a permanent residency in Param Dham for retaining him there, otherwise Kaula Sab would fly down to his editors room in Lucknow to continue with his work with devotion and dedication relentlessly. I pay my humble tributes to this giant of a genius. I also pray to God to give strength to rev. Mumyji, to bear his absence stoically, the way she assisted him to achieve his noble goals; to Phoolaji, Rajivji, Babliji, Neeruji, Anilji and their respective spouse to carry on his legacy. We shall miss deeply his sense of responsibility and humor--an odd combination which he only could handle.

With great regret, we announce the tragic death of Divya Jyoti Das, a Part-II, Metallurgical Engineering student (from Orissa) on Sunday, September 5th, at around 8:00 AM.
Mr. Divya Jyoti Das expired in a serious road accident while going to Lakhaniya Dari. He was in fact working with Pulse team (Pulse is a campus magazine published by IT-BHU students) till late night on the distribution work. Early in the morning, he and other branch mates decided to visit Lakhaniya, on the way to which a truck hit the bike (which DJ was riding) from behind.
DJ was an amazing kid. He was a very dynamic, hard working and dedicated student. He and Arif Kazi (a batch mate of his) designed the whole edition of Pulse.
It is indeed sad when a young life passes away at the prime of youth. May his soul rest in peace.

I have a message to the students:
Friends this is not the first time our institute has lost a young engineer en route to Lakhaniya dari/other adventure spots.
Please take extra-extra caution when ever you go on any adventure/picnic trip.
Please think twice about your parents before you go out, that will help you refrain yourself from taking undue risk while driving
