News about Google's Open Source projects and programs

It's time for more tasty statistics about Google Summer of Code 2005 - 2009. After much crunching and gathering, we have added the 2009 Accepted Students by School data to our published statistics page. Here are some highlights...

* We had a total of 591 schools represented this year, including 199 new schools, and a small but interesting number of "distance learning" schools. (These make tabulation interesting. If the student is studying remotely should the school, a.k.a the place of study, be the country where the school is - or where the student is?) This brings our total numbers of schools represented during the 5 years of the GSoC program to 1382.

* The 591 schools in 2009 are in a total of 81 countries, including seven countries that have not participated in past years. These include Kazakhstan with two participating students, and the following new countries with one participating student each: Comoros, Dominican Republic, Iceland, Moldavia, Morocco, Nigeria.

* For all you anxious alumni out there, here's the good part - which school has the most number of students participating. University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka continues to dominate the field with 22 students accepted.

Top 10 Schools in 2009 by # of Accepted Students

Sri Lanka - University of Moratuwa - 22

Brazil - University of Campinas / UNICAMP - 12

India - Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani, Goa campus - 9

Sweden - Royal Institute of Technology - 9

India - Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University - 8

Singapore - National University of Singapore - 8

And for comparison:

Top 10 Schools 2005 - 2009 by # of Accepted Students

Sri Lanka - University of Moratuwa - 79

Brazil - University of Campinas / UNICAMP - 37

Canada - University of Toronto - 34

Austria - Vienna University of Technology - 31

China - Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences - 30

United States - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - 28

Poland - Wroclaw University of Technology - 27

Hungary - Budapest University of Technology and Economics - 21

Canada - Carleton University - 21

Romania - Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi - 20

We hope you find these numbers to be of interest - there's lots more to see online.

Here's where we ask for the readers help: as you review the list of schools, please keep your eyes open for any duplicates, misspelling or missing institutions. We did our best, but as you can imagine, the report represents a bunch of small bites of data, we had more than several languages to parse, and we always try to respect each student's wishes as to how their school is designated. If you find something that looks wrong to you, especially in the 2009 data, please let us know in the comments section so we can take a look and correct as needed.

The Report on BOSM' 09 at BITS, Pilani
@ Sep 08, 2009
view in one page and print

(Report forwarded by: Satyendra Nath, General Secretary, Sports Wing, IT-BHU)

The BOSM’ 09 (BITS Open Sports Meet 2009), an inter-college sports competition was hosted by BITS, Pilani during 16-20 September.

As we started our journey on 14th Sept. 2009 from Kings Pavilion, I.T. Gymkhana with the blessings of our Director - Prof. S.N. Upadhyay, President I.T. Gymkhana - Dr. P.K. Mishra and Admin. Officer I.T. Gymkhana – Mr. Satish Kanaujiya, the contingent of 90 students (along with 4 officials), were pretty excited. The team reached the Cantonment Railway station to get our train, Marudhar Express for Jaipur. We reached the pink city Jaipur at 1:00 PM on 15th September. We left Jaipur for Pilani by Bus.

After reaching BITS Pilani at 10:30 PM., we finally got registered and got accommodated there.

Next day on 16th Sept. we attended the splendid Inaugural Function of BOSM-09 at 7:45 p.m. which was really an awesome experience. After the inaugural function we all gathered at basketball court. There we all discussed our plans and game strategies and exchanged good wishes for each other’s matches.

We started our victorious haul on 17th Sep with bronze in 5000 meters in early morning, in afternoon we got the silver and bronze medals in 100 meters race (girls).

The next day 18th Sept. was a golden day for IT-BHU. We got one gold medal in javelin (girls), one silver medal in 400 meters (boys), one bronze in swimming, one bronze in squash, and one bronze in weightlifting.

On 19th Sep we got one silver medal in long jump (boys), one silver medal and one bronze in long jump (girls) and one bronze in 1500 meters race (girls).

We finished our campaign by getting one silver in 4x400m relay (girls) and one silver in mixed doubles lawn tennis.

Along this, we also had games like volleyball (boys and girls), basketball, hockey, football and badminton. In all the games our team put up a good show against every opponent. The Volleyball (girls) team played very well against the sports college and put up a good fight but they unfortunately lost the match in 3rd set. We got 14 medals in all including one gold, six silvers and seven bronze. Out of 14 medals, 10 were won by girls with their awesome performance on ground. I feel that if we can provide extra coaching facilities to our team members, it will increase the level of our competence as we have much more talented boys and girls than any other college.

Seminar on the Indian Power Sector- Opportunities and Challenges ahead (December 18, 2009)
@ Sep 08, 2009
view in one page and print

(We are pleased to state that a seminar on the Indian Power Sector is being organized on 18th December at Lucknow jointly by Institution of Engineers (Lucknow) and Department of Electrical Engineering, IT-BHU, Varanasi. This is the first announcement for the seminar.

The information about the seminar is provided by Mr. Rakesh Goel (Electrical 1974). He can be reached at: goelrak@yahoomail.com.)

* Background

Major opportunities and challenges lie ahead of us to meet the electrical energy requirements of the country.

In spite of the Electricity Act 2003 paving the way for a competitive power sector, the progress is not enough to meet the requirement for a reliable supply to the entire population even by 2012 as aimed by the Govt. of India. Even if we plan to achieve China’s per capita consumption (in 2005) by the year 2012, installed capacity of around 450,000 MW would be required by 2012 to meet the peak demand of our country. This involves a mind boggling capital investment of around Rupees 30 lakh crores; but China has been adding a capacity of 70,000 MW year after year, and phasing out the smaller inefficient plants.

The seminar aims to have presentation of papers by experts to deliberate on this issue. The recommendations of the seminar are proposed to be sent to the Govt. of India in a report format.

Paper presentation and participation is sought from utility companies, manufacturers of electrical equipment, academic institutions, consultants, representatives from the govt. concerned with the power sector and regulatory commission.

Detail of the conference

The 2009 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference was organized by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists with the theme of Advancing Health through Innovation in Biotherapeutics, in the heaven of America Seattle, Washington, USA scheduled on June 21-24, 2009. Around one thousand peoples attended the conference and exchange the ideas with fellow scientists from over twenty countries around the world. The different technical session designed for four days like Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality, Drug Design and Discovery, Physical Pharmacy and Biopharmaceutics, Biotechnology, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research, Manufacturing Science and Engineering, Regulatory Sciences. The section provides an open forum for the discussion and dissemination of scientific developments. The conference presented 300 contributed papers for poster presentation in three days parallel sessions.

 Experience

2009 AAPS National Biotechnology Conference provided the platform to share ideas, experience and pose questions about the speakers’ research and presentation in symposia and round table discussion. The basic theme of conference to discussed about the innovation in the field of biotherapeutics with co-support of pharmaceuticals to provide the better medicine to treat the different type of diseases. The association gave the chance for direct talk session with speakers that is “Bio-Talk- connect with the speakers” an informal luncheon networking opportunity. In Bio talk sessions we shared ideas about complementary technology and new business ideas.

The technical session invited to participate in a variety of topics including sessions onDrug-drug Interactions, Protein Engineering, Drug Product Manufacturing, Computational Modeling, Translational Research of Biotherapeutics, and QbD. The conference concluded by offering participants the opportunity to attend one of three AAPS sponsored short term courses, all of which are certain to engage your interest. In the poster session although most of the papers at the conference were interesting, there were very few papers that were directly relevant to my research work because the conference was the hybrid of biotechnology and Pharma-technology. Selected graduate students, from reviewed posters, had an opportunity to highlight their major research conclusions. This session had a unique opportunity for attendees to learn about important scientific achievements and obtain a concise preview of some of the best posters at the conference. There were more than 100 exhibitors including manufacturers and suppliers of the materials used in the development and evaluation of biotherapeutics and pharmaceuticals. The AAPS career center offered the various services in expo for the participants like online submission of resume, interview with top companies and networking with recruiting companies.

I am thankful to Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology to provide me opportunities to stand in front of a dynamic international forum that is American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. The forum provides the platform to exchange the knowledge among the scientists to enhance the contribution in research and safety of human health. I interact and shared my view with almost 13,000 individuals representing from industry, academia, government and private institutions. The AAPS provide me chance to update my knowledge with the different field members like research, teaching, product development, quality control, clinical testing, regulatory affairs, and administration management. They offered the well managed scientific programs and ongoing education gives the opportunities for the networking and professional development.

I am very thankful to Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists), USA and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi for providing financial assistance to attend the conference and mange the expenses related to travel, accommodation and registration.

Need for use of Safety Helmet while riding a motor-bike
@ Sep 08, 2009
view in one page and print

(We are producing an open letter written to our student community and administration by our alumni, Vasudevan Raghavan (Mechanical 1983) and Animesh Pathak (CSE 2003). Here they are stressing the need for use of safety helmet by students while driving motorbikes. This simple step will save many lives lost by students in tragic road accidents, as seen in the recent tragic death of Mr. Divya Jyoti Das, a student. Divya Jyoti was killed few weeks ago while driving a motorbike and colliding with a truck. V. Raghavan can be contacted at: vasuerfolg@gmail.com and Animesh Pathak at: animesh@gmail.com)

431 Use of Helmet.png

(Use of helmet while riding a motorbike)

We, the alumni of our beloved institute are deeply grieved and shocked to hear about the tragic accident and subsequent death of one of our very capable students - Divya Jyoti Das, (2nd Year Metallurgy) on 5th Sept. Apart from being a very good student, he also had a well-rounded personality, participating in the design and writing of the edition of Pulse, the institute's student-run newsletter, which was revived this month. In the death of Divya Jyoti Das, we have definitely lost someone with a great potential, but before it could bloom into its full.

We are all aware that this was not the first such accident that claimed the life of promising young person, but we are convinced that we could make this the last such incident, if we all put our heart and will together to take some concrete actions.

We, the alumni are aware that the BHU administration has "officially" banned the usage of scooters and motorcycles by students within the campus, but the reality is that the students work around this ban by parking the bikes outside the university walls and by using it outside the campus. This being the reality, we feel that the institute should proactively take steps that can make it safer for the students to ride the bikes.

It is possible to make helmets available to the students at an affordable price and the institute certainly has the wherewithal to make this happen, by facilitating the sale of helmets at a discount to the students.  The administration can motivate the dealers to sell helmets at an attractive price, and if necessary, some funds could be made available to the students through institute from the alumni's end, enabling them to get helmets at a subsidized rate.

The institute can initiate the following action points:

1. Initiate a program at the institute to make students acutely aware of the necessity to wear helmets and in other aspects of road-safety.

2. To approach the dealers of helmets to negotiate a suitable price at which helmets become affordable to the students.

3. To let alumni know if we could help in this program in any other manner.  We are all very nervous about such incidents of death due to road mishaps happening from time to time and would like our students to complete their stay at the alma mater in complete safety.

We sincerely hope that the bike-owning students of the institute will come forward to make full use of the administration's assistance, and will resolve to use the helmets, both for the rider and the pillion, while riding their bikes.

We look forward to students and the institute administration taking some pro-active action to prevent such mishaps in future.

With warm regards,

Vasudevan Raghavan

LakshyaIIT E-portal started by Raghav Kansal and Mohit Singh (3rd year Civil)
@ Sep 08, 2009
view in one page and print

(LakshyaIIT-an educational website/ portal is started by our 3rd year Civil Engineering students, Raghav Kansal and Mohit Singh. The website helps students prepare better for IIT-JEE exam, according to its website: http://www.lakshyaiit.com/).

432 Clippings.png

Profiles of co-founders:

432 Raghav Kansal.png

(Raghav Kansal)

Raghav Kansal: He worked at Mavcomm Consultancy for summer internship. He has also worked in a start up in tourism sector, as a branding strategist. His expertise lies in bringing off-beat solutions to the table. His ability to somehow reach to the influential people in the industry and attract their attention has served as an important milestone for the venture. He is the key person behind the publicity, marketing and branding strategies of the venture. He can be contacted at raghav@lakshyaiit.com or rknexus@gmail.com.

432 Mohit.png

(Mohit Singh)

Mohit Singh: His ability lies in getting the work done by the people and keep them motivated to strive for the best. He is effectively leading the team of 17 people, carefully distributing the work, so that everyone does what he or she is best at. Also he is an avid mathematician. He is the co-author of the first book of Lakshya Publication, which will be launched in the market shortly. He has worked as a trainee under Delhi Metro Rail Cooperation. He can be reached at mohitsingh.itbhu@gmail.com.

Chronicle posed some questions:

Q-1: When was the website started? How was the idea conceived?

I (Raghav) have been guiding my younger brother for last two years for his IIT-JEE preparations. I helped him regarding what to study, how to study, the study resources, what is important, how to avoid silly mistakes, motivating him and keeping him hundred percent efficient. All of sudden I remembered my IIT-JEE preparation days, and a thought struck my mind, that if I had someone to guide me then I would have done much better in the exam and with much less effort. I discussed this with my friends and surprisingly all of them felt the same. And then we thought about the big picture. About the lakhs of students who have no one to guide them and who are constantly working hard but not getting the desired results. And that is when the idea of lakshyaiit.com originated. We wanted to provide a platform where IIT-JEE aspirants from all over the country could be guided towards not only working hard but also working smart to achieve their ambitions. And in this era of technology, what could be a better platform than an e-portal. The website was officially launched on 17 September 2009 and has received around 1500 hits within first 15 days.

Q-2: Throw some light on your Business Model?

We have a very simple, but effective business model in place. We are fulfilling the counselling requirement for JEE aspirants through our website and will fulfil their course material requirement through our publication house which we are to start shortly. The profits will be generated through the advertisements placed on our website and through the sales of the book which we are to publish shortly. Both the book and the website will complement and promote each other. The website is already running under profit.

Q-3: Don't you think that the market is overloaded with IIT-JEE preparation books. What chance do you stand?

No doubt, there are hundreds of books in the market. But still no such book exist (especially in maths and chemistry) which excels in all the fields (i.e. theory, solved examples, questions and sample papers). You ask any experienced person in this field, which books to study from and what you will get to listen is something like "theory from book 1, practice from book 2, sample papers from book 3...". Our idea is to provide the full package, by integrating the best possible features into one and using the combined effort of our team I am sure, we will be able to do it. Also this is first time a book in this sector has been written by the students. That is another point of distinction for us.  All the details of the book have been uploaded on the website, and students have already started showing interest.

Q-4: How do you plan to arrange for the initial investment required for Lakshya Publication?

1. Through the profits which we make from the website.

2. By placing few advertisements in the book. If magazines and newspapers can have them, why not the course books!

3. We are planning to apply at our institute's Malaviya Centre for Innovation, Incubation, & Entrepreneurship.

4. We will not launch the book on a very big scale initially thus the start up cost will not be very high.

5. We have taken special measures (like arranging paper directly from a paper mill, etc.) to keep the cost per book minimum.

Q-5: What is the average cost of training, success rate for IIT-JEE, how many students enrolled per year?

A total of 384,977 candidates appeared in JEE-2009 and out of them 10,035 candidates have been declared qualified. That implies success rate of around 2.5%. One year coaching for IIT JEE can cost you anywhere between 25-80 thousand rupees, depending upon the coaching you are choosing.

Q-7: Near future plans.

Having received unexpected media coverage, we have started receiving a very large number of queries daily, although right now we have sufficient time, but soon exams will start. That implies, more work and less time. We have plans to expand the team by hiring people from second year, so that workload per person is considerably reduced and we can keep the website functioning during the end semester exams also, which at present is the biggest challenge. Also we will be applying for the copyrights of the book and once we are done we will launch it in Varanasi at a grand scale amongst thousands of students. The entire event will be sponsored and thus not add to any extra cost.

Q-8: Anything else you want to say.

The entire project is not only a great learning experience but also a lot of fun. I feel it's a much better and more interesting way of learning business than joining a 2 years course in a B-School. Although this is a business venture, but it feels really nice when a student tells you that your advice has been very helpful to him and his problem is solved. The acknowledgement of the fact that you are leaving a positive impact (no matter how small) on so many lives is a wonderful feeling. Also we feel grateful to all our friends cum team members whose diligent efforts made this all possible, especially Maghesh Kumar Singh, Malay Goel, Saurabh Singh, Anjaneya Dixit and Jaskaran Singh. At the end of the day, what matters is how the experience has been, and we are sure, it will be one of the most wonderful phases of our lives.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/news/city/varanasi/Lakshyaiit-to-help-IIT-JEE-aspirants/articleshow/5056818.cms

TNN 25 September 2009, 10:07pm IST

VARANASI: To help the IIT-JEE aspirants in their preparations, some students from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Delhi have come together to launch an e-portal.

"IIT-JEE is not a difficult examination but an examination with a difference. You don't need a PhD-level study to crack it. All you need is a guided and concentrated effort. The portal 'Lakshyaiit' would help and support them at every step and in every way possible," said Raghav Kansal of IT-BHU, who is leading the project.

According to him, the portal has many features that would be highly motivating to the IIT-JEE aspirants. The team is also working on a unique discussion forum, which will be moderated by a team of IITians. This forum will serve as a platform for the JEE aspirants to discuss their doubts and problems directly with the IITians.

Not only this, the team has also planned to launch a series of books covering the entire syllabus of IIT-JEE. "The first book of the series is scheduled to be launched in January next," said Maghesh Kumar Singh, another member of the team.
