Chronicle posed some questions:

Q-1: When was the website started? How was the idea conceived?

I (Raghav) have been guiding my younger brother for last two years for his IIT-JEE preparations. I helped him regarding what to study, how to study, the study resources, what is important, how to avoid silly mistakes, motivating him and keeping him hundred percent efficient. All of sudden I remembered my IIT-JEE preparation days, and a thought struck my mind, that if I had someone to guide me then I would have done much better in the exam and with much less effort. I discussed this with my friends and surprisingly all of them felt the same. And then we thought about the big picture. About the lakhs of students who have no one to guide them and who are constantly working hard but not getting the desired results. And that is when the idea of lakshyaiit.com originated. We wanted to provide a platform where IIT-JEE aspirants from all over the country could be guided towards not only working hard but also working smart to achieve their ambitions. And in this era of technology, what could be a better platform than an e-portal. The website was officially launched on 17 September 2009 and has received around 1500 hits within first 15 days.

Q-2: Throw some light on your Business Model?

We have a very simple, but effective business model in place. We are fulfilling the counselling requirement for JEE aspirants through our website and will fulfil their course material requirement through our publication house which we are to start shortly. The profits will be generated through the advertisements placed on our website and through the sales of the book which we are to publish shortly. Both the book and the website will complement and promote each other. The website is already running under profit.

Q-3: Don't you think that the market is overloaded with IIT-JEE preparation books. What chance do you stand?

No doubt, there are hundreds of books in the market. But still no such book exist (especially in maths and chemistry) which excels in all the fields (i.e. theory, solved examples, questions and sample papers). You ask any experienced person in this field, which books to study from and what you will get to listen is something like "theory from book 1, practice from book 2, sample papers from book 3...". Our idea is to provide the full package, by integrating the best possible features into one and using the combined effort of our team I am sure, we will be able to do it. Also this is first time a book in this sector has been written by the students. That is another point of distinction for us.  All the details of the book have been uploaded on the website, and students have already started showing interest.

Q-4: How do you plan to arrange for the initial investment required for Lakshya Publication?

1. Through the profits which we make from the website.

2. By placing few advertisements in the book. If magazines and newspapers can have them, why not the course books!

3. We are planning to apply at our institute's Malaviya Centre for Innovation, Incubation, & Entrepreneurship.

4. We will not launch the book on a very big scale initially thus the start up cost will not be very high.

5. We have taken special measures (like arranging paper directly from a paper mill, etc.) to keep the cost per book minimum.

Q-5: What is the average cost of training, success rate for IIT-JEE, how many students enrolled per year?

A total of 384,977 candidates appeared in JEE-2009 and out of them 10,035 candidates have been declared qualified. That implies success rate of around 2.5%. One year coaching for IIT JEE can cost you anywhere between 25-80 thousand rupees, depending upon the coaching you are choosing.

Q-7: Near future plans.

Having received unexpected media coverage, we have started receiving a very large number of queries daily, although right now we have sufficient time, but soon exams will start. That implies, more work and less time. We have plans to expand the team by hiring people from second year, so that workload per person is considerably reduced and we can keep the website functioning during the end semester exams also, which at present is the biggest challenge. Also we will be applying for the copyrights of the book and once we are done we will launch it in Varanasi at a grand scale amongst thousands of students. The entire event will be sponsored and thus not add to any extra cost.

Q-8: Anything else you want to say.

The entire project is not only a great learning experience but also a lot of fun. I feel it's a much better and more interesting way of learning business than joining a 2 years course in a B-School. Although this is a business venture, but it feels really nice when a student tells you that your advice has been very helpful to him and his problem is solved. The acknowledgement of the fact that you are leaving a positive impact (no matter how small) on so many lives is a wonderful feeling. Also we feel grateful to all our friends cum team members whose diligent efforts made this all possible, especially Maghesh Kumar Singh, Malay Goel, Saurabh Singh, Anjaneya Dixit and Jaskaran Singh. At the end of the day, what matters is how the experience has been, and we are sure, it will be one of the most wonderful phases of our lives.

VARANASI: To help the IIT-JEE aspirants in their preparations, some students from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), IIT-Kanpur and IIT-Delhi have come together to launch an e-portal.

"IIT-JEE is not a difficult examination but an examination with a difference. You don't need a PhD-level study to crack it. All you need is a guided and concentrated effort. The portal 'Lakshyaiit' would help and support them at every step and in every way possible," said Raghav Kansal of IT-BHU, who is leading the project.

According to him, the portal has many features that would be highly motivating to the IIT-JEE aspirants. The team is also working on a unique discussion forum, which will be moderated by a team of IITians. This forum will serve as a platform for the JEE aspirants to discuss their doubts and problems directly with the IITians.

Not only this, the team has also planned to launch a series of books covering the entire syllabus of IIT-JEE. "The first book of the series is scheduled to be launched in January next," said Maghesh Kumar Singh, another member of the team.
