We are also pleased to state that it was the first such alumni funded project to support a student for internship abroad. The funding was as follows:

Total cost of the internship (including travel, stay, food, local expenses, etc.) was Rs. 150,000.

Contribution made by Host Institute was Rs. 68,000 (including air-fare)

Contribution made by Alumni was Rs. 82,000. The amount was raised by a small group of alumni.

2010 summer internship abroad-funding by alumni association

We plan to launch more such programs with increased funding for the year 2010 and beyond. Depending upon fund collected through donations, we propose to send up to five students for summer internship abroad. First, the student will be required to get financial help from the host institute as much as possible. The balance amount (maximum of Rs. 100,000) will be provided by the alumni association. Selection criteria will include, high grades achieved by the student and the reputation of the host institute.

The need for providing financial help to students for summer internship abroad

This will among the most desirable alumni funded projects, which will be launched soon. The project provides immense benefits compared to the cost involved. The advantages for launching the project are:

* It will help a student to get high quality training at premier institutes abroad. This will be good for the career as the students will then hope for better job opportunities in industry or in teaching/ R & D field.

* As more students go abroad for internship, the institute’s name will be known in India/abroad, resulting in more qualified IIT-JEE students desiring to join our institute.

* If a student successfully completes internship abroad, it will open the door for other students to join that institute.

*The student will also be exposed to cross-culture experience at the early stage of life.

I did my internship under Prof. K. V. Rao, Department of Material Science, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. I decided to take internship in KTH because Prof. K. V. Rao is a world renowned professor and KTH is among the top 10 institutes of Europe.

I worked on Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMG).My work was to nanocrystallize the BMG so as to enhance magnetic properties.

I will advise students to definitely go abroad for an internship once because it will give you a chance to look at life in a different way. It will give you an opportunity to know about new people and about their different traditions and culture. It will give you a chance to look how advanced people have become across the globe.

I will suggest scoring highest grades and then apply to top ten institutes in U.S., Europe, U.K. and Japan. Any good project inside or outside the institute will also add to your chances of getting foreign internship.

Good CGPA always help but it is not the only factor which determines foreign internship. You have to start working on projects now in 2nd yr and then have to look for people working in this field.CGPA has nothing to do with projects. see in what sort of project you are interested in. If you are not able to find your interest then associate with top professor of your department and do work under him whatever he suggested.
