The following is the report for fund-raising lunch event at Bangalore and meeting with our institute director on Nov 21, 2009.
________________________________________
The Bangalore chapter of the IT-BHU Global Alumni Association (IBGAA) organized its Alumni Luncheon and IT-BHU fundraiser on Saturday, November 21, at the house of V. L. Narayanan (Electrical 1983, President, ITBGAA) in Jayanagar.
As luck would have it turned out to be a sunny day as the city was having one of its worst rainy weeks in years. Must be the blessings of the Kashi Vishwanath!
About 70 alumni showed up and they had a great time. The occasion was made special by the presence of Shri S. N. Upadhyay, Director of IT-BHU who flew in from Varanasi specially to meet alumni. He brought along with a box of Prasad from Sankat Mochan Mandir. Special guest was Prof V. V Challam, former head of Dept. of Electrical Engineering, who retired in 1988 and lives in Bangalore. The surprise participant was Shri Natarajan from the 1946 batch, who looked good for his age and reminisced fondly of Morvi and Rajputana hostels.
Food was excellent and by popular choice one of the local caterers (who happened to be from Banaras) made kachoris and jalebis on the lawns itself. Paan made the occasion memorable.
This being a fund-raiser occasion, we raised an all voluntary sum of Rs. 40,000 INR; checks were made out to the ITBGAA fund in Varanasi.
Quite a few of the alumni showed up from the 70’s and 80’s batch and they made it a point to schedule the next get together sometime in March.
The director made a short speech and gave us an update on the progress towards IIT-BHU. He added that if all goes well we expect the 2010 incoming batch of JEE entrants to be admitted to IIT-BHU.
Special Guests Included:
Prof. S. N. Upadhyay, Director, IT-BHU
Prof. V. V. Challam, former Head, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IT-BHU
Pankaj Chandra, Mining 1983, Director, IIM-Bangalore
Vish Narayanan, Electrical 1983 President, ITBHU Global Alumni Association
Mr. Natarajan (1946 batch)

O'Brien: The Influencers of Silicon Valley
By Chris O'Brien
Mercury News Columnist
Posted: 12/13/2009 01:00:00 AM PST

(Vish Mishra)
The untimely death earlier this year of Rajeev Motwani, the Stanford professor who had advised Google's co-founders, unleashed an astonishing wave of tributes to this classic Influencer.
Inspired by his example, I've been assembling my own list of The Influencers of Silicon Valley. I wasn't interested in touting, yet again, Steve Jobs, Mark Hurd and their high-profile counterparts. Instead, I wanted to identify others like Motwani — quiet, unheralded people who are shaping conversations and ideas across the valley and around the world through their research, their advising, their teaching, their networking or their investing.
Through conversations, e-mails and tweets with colleagues, friends and sources, I compiled an initial list of more than 100 candidates, including many I had never heard of. Then I whittled it down, in part by focusing on those who are having a real, quantifiable impact. In many cases, these people might be superstars in their realm yet barely known outside of it. My final 10 are not necessarily the most influential, but they are playing an essential role in shaping the valley's innovation economy.
Consider this list a celebration of what is best about Silicon Valley.
……………………………….
THE CONNECTOR
Vish Mishra is go-to guy for Indian, valley entrepreneurs
After 30 years on the high-tech scene, Vish Mishra, 64, could be forgiven for throttling back a bit.
Instead, Mishra seems to be accelerating, a whirlwind of activity that has him traveling, speaking and advising startups and entrepreneurs.
Officially, he's a partner at Clearstone Venture Partners. But what keeps him on the go these days is his role as president of TiE Silicon Valley, the largest and original chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs. Mishra was one of the founding members of TiE, which was started in 1992 by a group of Indian professionals in Silicon Valley to create community and better networking opportunities. But its reach has expanded well beyond the Indian community to be a major resource for entrepreneurs across Silicon Valley.
"TiE is not just for the Indian community," Mishra said. "There's only one vision. It is purely about business entrepreneurship."
TiE helps startups through year-round training programs and networking events. Among the main events is the annual TiE conference. And if you've never attended one, then you've missed one of the truly awesome gatherings of entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley.
Mishra's term as president began this year and runs through 2012. In that position, he serves as one of the main hosts and organizers of the annual confab, which drew 3,600 people last May. Though the event draws people from beyond the Indian community, it's also an unmistakable reminder of the prominence of Indians in Silicon Valley.
Through his work at TiE, Mishra shares the wealth of lessons he's learned after being a CEO of four startups and a director on countless others.
"My passion is just to help others," Mishra said. "My knowledge, I'm not going to take it back with me. If I can lift up someone else's life, then that's great."

For implementation of the proposed Health Information Network of the National Knowledge Commission:
http://www.knowledgecommission.gov.in/recommendations/hin.asp
the Government of India has formed a Working Group on Health Literacy. We are glad to inform that Prof. Supten Sarbadhikari is one of the nominated members of that working group.
Following are the coverage by Education Express of Nov 30, 2009. Please see PDF of page # 1 & 4 for the article, “Informatics, a road less traveled.”

Excerpts from Page 4:
There are a few other distant mode certificate / diploma courses from India that are based on printed text materials and for ethical reasons I shall not comment on them. In my online course I have been getting students from all over the world – e. g, USA, UK, Europe, Africa, Iran, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The general feedback is very good since all my modules have a mandatory time-bound assignment that is akin to a real life problem,” says Dr Suptendra Nath Sarbadhikari, (MBBS, PhD) the Founding Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at PSG IMS&R, Coimbatore and also the Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Medical Informatics (2007-2011).
Currently job openings are not many in India. However, participants successfully completing courses on health informatics are likely to be involved in the identification, planning, implementation and use of computer-based information systems in all areas of the healthcare industry, including hospitals and health directorates.
Right now not many hospitals in India are fully digital. However, within 5 - 10 years the laws of the land will most likely require mandatory digitization of the hospitals. The early movers are likely to benefit more in such a scenario.
“Those who take up training in such disciplines now (when there is clearly not much of a demand) will naturally gain a lot as and when health informatics in India becomes a routine requirement. My personal guess is that within the next 5-10 years all healthcare delivery will be somehow linked to ICT. Even the WHO aims to make all persons in the world have access to an informed healthcare provider by 2015. Anyone (either from healthcare or technology background) associated with and/or interested in healthcare delivery can pursue such courses,” Dr Sarbadhikari says.
About Dr. Suptendra Nath Sarbadhikari
Currently Professor, Dept. of Biomedical Informatics, PSG Institute, Coimbatore.
He received PhD, in Biomedical Engineering, on neural network aided analysis of electrophysiological signals in stress and exercise, from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, in 1995. US TV stations to broadcast Indian American animator's films
Tue, Nov 24 09:33 AM
Chicago, Nov 24 (IANS) Several PBS television stations in Colorado are set to broadcast animation films made by Indian American Manick Sorcar in time for the holiday season.

(Manick Sorkar)
All of Sorcar's animations are based on fables from the Panchatantra and other Indian classics.
The series will contain 'Deepa and Rupa: A Fairy Tale From India', winner of the Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival and nominated for three Heartland Regional Emmy Awards; 'The Sage and the Mouse', winner of the Gold Medal at the International Film Festival of New York; 'Sniff', winner of the C.I.N.E. Golden Eagle; and 'The Woodcutter's Daughter', a finalist at the New York Festival.
'The Sage and the Mouse' and 'The Woodcutter's Daughter' are based on the Panchatantra, and 'Sniff' on Aabol Tabol ('Nonsense'), a popular book of poems by Sukumar Ray.
Acclaimed as the cultural bridge between East and West, Sorcar's animations are staples at elementary schools and have been telecast for the past 17 years on PBS channels during the holiday season.
Sorcar first came into the spotlight in the early 1990s, when his 'Deepa and Rupa: A Fairy Tale From India', recorded as India's first animation mixed with live action, received a host of prestigious awards including the Gold Plaque at the Chicago International Film Festival, and was nominated for three Heartland Regional Emmy Awards.
An electrical engineer by profession, Manick is the son of legendary magician P.C. Sorcar. His engineering firm did the lighting design for the Denver International Airport, sport centres in Japan and palaces for Saudi princes. He is also the author of three university texts on lighting.

Cab pool to the airport and save money
Abhijit Dev Kumar
Now share a cab to the airport by registering on ‘ www.rideinsync.com’ |
A ride from the airport to the city will cost Rs. 250, Rs. 300 respectively depending on the time
Keeping security in view, service launched only for those working in corporate houses

Innovative: Deepesh Agarwal, founder of the cab service Ride In Sync.
Hyderabad: How many times have you travelled to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in a cab and ended up paying just short of Rs. 1,000? May be you would save more if you just ‘Ride In Sync’. Christened as a ‘cab-pooling’ service, Ride In Sync helps to cut down travelling costs to the airport. The catch is one has to share their cab.
Ride In Sync’s concept revolves around sharing a cab with a trusted co-passenger of one’s choice. To avail the service, all one has to do is register themselves on ‘ www.rideinsync.com’ with their corporate email id, fill in details to find a co-passenger.
The service, which was conceptualised by Deepesh Agarwal, an alumnus of Indian School of Business, was launched for students of ISB during April this year. With its popularity among the students, Ride In Sync took off commercially on September 15 and today, the service is used by over 500 registered users.
But what made him take up such an initiative? “While travelling to the airport, I’ve seen that most of the cars had only single passengers. I started working on the project and formed Ride In Sync, a platform where you can find reliable people who are willing to share a cab to the airport,” says Mr. Agarwal.
Moreover, keeping security in view, the service was launched only for those working for corporate houses. “Only employees working in corporate companies can use the site by logging in with their official email address. This way, passengers will have a little background information about their co-passengers,” points out Mr. Agarwal.
A ride from the airport to the city in a shared cab will cost Rs. 250 from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Rs. 300 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
“According to the tariffs, one can save almost about 50 per cent travel costs and if five per cent of the airport travellers start using the service, about 220 cars will be off the airport stretch,” says Mr. Agarwal.

International Forum on Coal Conversion High Technology was held at Xian, China during Nov. 11-13, 2009. Over 150 delegates from various countries participated in the forum. Dr. Deepak Waikar, IT-BHU Alumnus and Hon. Vice President, International Energy Foundation (A Non-profit Group), Regional HQ - Asia-Pacific, was invited as one of the plenary speakers for this conference. Dr. Waikar gave presentation on "Global Coal Conversion Development". Currently 28% of world energy consumption is met by coal which is likely to grow in coming decades. America, China and India use coal to generate about 60% or more of their electricity needs which contributes to high level of pollutions and CO2 emissions. Coal Conversion technologies provide alternatives that could be less polluting. However, capital cost is very high and technology transfer is tightly controlled. Nevertheless, efforts must continue to find a balance for cleaner & greener environment.
Site visit to one of the petrochemical plants was also organised.

To lead company’s aggressive strategy to achieve triple digit growth
New Delhi, November 10, 2009. Headstrong, one of the world’s leading IT consulting firms in the financial services industry today announced the appointment of Sandeep Sahai, President and Chief Operating Officer, as CEO of the company effective January 1, 2010. Sandeep will be based at the firm’s corporate headquarters in Virginia, USA and takes over from current CEO and erstwhile co-founder of the HCL Group, Arjun Malhotra, who will continue as Chairman of the company.
Sandeep’s appointment is designed to cement and accelerate Headstrong’s emergence as Wall Street’s dominant IT consulting company, in light of the transformation faced by the financial services industry in general, and the securities sector in particular.
"Sandeep had spearheaded our entry into the financial services sector years ago, and I am confident he will not only ensure absolute global leadership for us in this space but also transition the company from a medium-sized niche firm to a large outsourcing corporation that will compete with the established global IT behemoths," said Arjun.
"While competitors are reducing their exposure to financial services, we continue to invest aggressively in chosen verticals, given the deluge of regulatory changes and the continual emergence of new financial products," said Sandeep.
Headstrong’s strategy continues to focus on helping clients transform their fixed-cost structures to variable ones. Headstrong recently acquired mortgage processing company Lydian Data Services, making it a leading provider of correspondent loan fulfillment services. The acquisition of boutique firm iXPartners additionally boosted capabilities in middle and back-office operations to asset management institutions. Globally, the company today has close to 3000 employees spread across 19 offices in 8 countries. Headstrong’s India operations include 1500 employees and development centers in Noida, Bangalore and Hyderabad.
Note to editors:
Headstrong specializes in “domain-led” consulting services, focusing on niche verticals in financial markets including asset management, derivatives, wealth management, prime brokerage, reference data, compliance and mortgages. Services range from strategy consulting to application development and maintenance to operations outsourcing in its stated areas of expertise.
Sandeep Sahai, 46, was a founder and partner of the IT consulting firm TechSpan that merged with Headstrong in 2003. (The following is the preliminary report on brand-building project activities by IT-BHU global Alumni Association. In anticipation of getting IIT status for our institute, it was decided to create brand image for the institute and our IT-BHU community. For brand-building, a special interest group led by Vish Laxmi Narayanan (Electrical 1983), President of IBGAA and Varun Grover (Civil 2003) was formed. Contact details are as follows:
Vish Laxmi Narayanan: Email: vish.narayanan@gmail.com
Varun Grover: Email: varun.grover26@gmail.com
Sig group for brand-building: Email: sig.brandbuilding [AT] itbhuglobal.org)
The Idea: In 2007, a YouTube video of a female singer performing in some Indian college became a rage online. The reason being – it was titled 'Hot IIT girl singing'. That is the power of a brand; it can sell anything, anywhere.
In the course of many discussions among the alumni group (called 'Brand Building Team') as we approached the long-pending IIT announcement, it was constantly re-echoed that we at IT-BHU have many USPs, many brand-worthy novelties, and a legacy like no else in Indian education world. Then why not milk it? Why not expose it to the world? Why not take it to its logical conclusion – doing something about it!
The Plan: We all pitched in with our ideas; our own 'personal favourite' USPs of IT-BHU. The most notable were the location (the grand old city of Varanasi), the campus (Malaviyaji's BHU), the student life experience (with all the extra -curricular clubs, high quality hostels and mess etc.), and future perfect (one of the best placements and a shining alumni base).
It was planned to make some tangible products using these brand attributes – products which one could keep (posters), gift (table calendar), show (a music video), play (a song) or display with pride. A series of initial products were finalized (song, video, posters and table calendar) and a volunteer team decided upon to go to Banaras and start working on it.
The idea was to make products which are as good as any memorabilia available in the high-end market, as well as make products which have long term utility (like calendars). The three main target segments for the products are: 1) Students and Alumni (pride and memories factor) 2) Corporate and Industry, the visiting companies or companies where our alumni are heading or working (know-our-legacy factor) 3) New students (still undecided JEE qualifiers who want a quick tour of our ethos and philosophy)
Execution 1.0: Amitanshu Nath (Electrical 2003) volunteered to compose the song, written by Varun Grover (Civil 2003). The song called 'Toh Bana' is an ingenuine mix of sounds, words, imagery, and philosophy that make-up the unique experience IT-BHU is.
The song and a first-cut video were officially played at the Bangalore Alumni Meet in November.
Execution 2.0: Varun Grover and his wife Raj Kumari, a professional product designer and photographer, landed in Varanasi in November 1st week to click pictures and get some detailed research done on the history of IT-BHU. Oddly, there was very little, if any, documentation available regarding its history.
Prof. B. B. Bansal (Mechanical Engineering) was the only support system available and if not for his absolute support, the simple task of clicking pictures in BHU and reading up some material in Central Library would have been impossible.
Execution 3.0: The posters are being made, calendar design is being finalized, and IIT announcement is very much awaited. The first few steps towards a holistic branding have been achieved but more important steps of getting the products to reach its targets is still pending. That needs some funds, and more importantly, people willing to take responsibility. People, who know how to market or how to distribute, will be an asset in this last but crucial stage of first project by Brand Building Team of IT-BHU Global Alumni Association.
