During my recent visit to our campus, I had meeting with Vice-Chancellor of our university, Prof. Dhirendra Pal Singh about IT-BHU to IIT-BHU conversion issue. He informed me that IIT conversion is on its way. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1963 will be modified by the parliament during February/March session.

He also added that BHU Act, 1915 will be modified along with the amendment of IT Act at the same time (concomitant way). I also got confirmation about this while discussing with a member of BHU Executive Council. The last time BHU Act was modified was in 1985.

Currently our application is cleared by the Planning Commission and it is lying with EFC (Expenditure and Finance Committee) of HRD ministry. Followed by EFC meeting, the suitable Cabinet note will be prepared by MHRD for the approval by Union Cabinet.

The Institutes of Technology Act, 1963 will be modified to include names of the eight new IITs being set up in the country, along with our institute.

We all had attended the funeral of former VC, BHU - Professor P Ramachandra Rao on the 13th of this month and paid our homage. We attended the final rituals today at his residence. Most of his close relatives, his colleagues and a host of his students and admirers, including his teachers: Former Director, ITBHU - Professor PM Prasad and Professor P Rama Rao, Former Secretary, DST & Former VC, Central University of Hyderabad and a number of other luminous dignitaries, were present on both occasions. CONDOLENCE MESSAGE

We, the members of BHUMET family are deeply shocked to learn about the sad demise of Prof. Patcha Ramachandra Rao on January 10, 2010 in Madurai.

Professor Ramachandra Rao was not only a distinguished alumnus of our Department but also served the Department as an exemplary teacher. His pioneering research in the area of rapid solidification in the country became a golden nucleus for the creation of a school of researchers in the general area of non-equilibrium processing. His alma-mater proudly counts him amongst select few who held many prestigious positions, such as Coordinator, School of Materials Science and Technology, Director, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur and Vice-Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University. During his stay at BHU, Professor Rao inspired many youngsters with his child-like scientific curiosity to carry out outstanding research.

He is survived by his wife Smt. Sudha Rao, daughter Smt. Suparna and son Ch. Animesh. In this hour of grief we express our heart-felt condolences to the bereaved family and pray the Almighty that his soul may rest in peace.

(Shamsuddin)
