http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/varanasi/Green-mining-system-for-efficient-use-of-coal-energy/articleshow/5359871.cms
TNN, 21 December 2009, 07:17am IST
VARANASI: Can clean coal technology bring about efficient and eco-friendly use of coal energy, the largest energy source in the country? If energy experts are to be believed, the country needs early adoption of green mining system (in coal fields) for sustainable and environment-friendly use of coal energy.
"More than 50 per cent of country's energy requirement is dependent on coal and the situation is not going to change in the coming 50 years," said Prof YP Chugh, energy expert from the US while talking to TOI on Sunday. "There is a growing need for sustainable development of mining system and switching over to green mining system like the US could be a better option," he added.
It may be mentioned here that Prof Chugh is a member of the International Task Force working for sustainable coal development in China that has world's largest coal deposits. In addition, he has also worked for sustainable development of mining system in the US.
"It is not necessary that the technology used in the US is also feasible in India, but efforts should be made for promoting energy-efficient and eco-friendly methods for generating energy," he said, hinting at the use of green mining system with some modifications. The target of energy production should be to cause minimal loss to the environment, in addition to coming up with cheap and reliable technology, he added.
Saying he had worked for dust control in underground coal beds in the US, he added it was important to minimise the exposure of work force to particulate matter, the pollutants in the coal fields. Similarly, efforts like reduction of amount of silica and coal dust apart from coal combustion by products including fly ash, bottom ash and other gasification by products could also be introduced in the green mining system, he said.
Prof Chugh was a key participant of the three-day international conference on issues and challenges in energy conversion and management (ICEM), organised in the department of Mechanical Engineering, IT, BHU, also concluding on Sunday.
"The country can no longer afford to use coal energy without taking care of the environment as it can backfire with colossal loss to human life and property," he said. "The focus should be on developing cheap, reliable and sustainable technology that leads to efficient energy consumption besides protecting the environment," he concluded.

This spring as the mercury would start its climb; there would be another source which would heat up the campus environment in BHU. Anveshan 2010, which will be held from 26th to 28th March 2010, will be the first edition of the annual Techno-management Festival being organized by the department of metallurgical engineering, IT-BHU.
The basic objective of this festival is to promote an out of the box thinking scheme among students so that they can stand out in a crowd. While academics play a very important role in one’s career, it takes a little extra to maintain a competitive edge from others. This festival will provide that platform for students where they change from job-seekers to those chased by companies.
This event will serve as an opportunity for all students to come out and take the centre stage. A plethora of technical events will help them in developing their scientific acumen and attract them to the field of wholesome research. Interacting with various professionals will help them in realising the challenges ahead so that they can be prepared when it is their turn to stand and deliver. There are various events planned like case study, IDP which helps the students working in tandem with the industries. This will also serve as an important aspect of the Industry-Institute partnership. Self-confidence attained from such events results in double enthusiasm in academic and other pursuits. The cultural events like Debates etc. would help the students brush up their soft skills. Also events like the business plan will help promoting the entrepreneurship skills among students.
The event will be conducted at national level. Students from various colleges all over the country would be invited to participate. Also dignitaries from various industries as well as research institutes will be invited to judge encourage and enlighten the students. It will also give an opportunity for some good outside the classroom interactions between the faculty and students which is very important considering we have a tradition of Guru-Shishya relationships.
This event will be a showcase of the talent hidden among the students. The future of our country is in these hands and they will show how well they are prepared to shoulder the burden. Be there...

(Report by Abhinav Pandey (part-III Electrical Engineering. Email: abhinav.pandey.eee07@itbhu.ac.in)
C.C.A. Wing, IT-Gymkhana and Goonj Team published a couple of GoonjKY editions (one just before KY and one during KY).
The Kashiyatra was held on IT-BHU campus during 22-25 January, 2010. You can view both the editions here.
The Goonj team received a great success by heralding the formation of the students’ Media Club under the CCA wing IT Gymkhana. The Media Club would take care of the student publications in the campus. The team published two newsletters in the KY period titled Goonj KY. One was a four-page illustrated pre -KY edition of which 3,000 copies were published. These were distributed in all IT hostels as well hostels of other faculties including medical and commerce to name a few. This edition comprised of a roundup of events, pronites and covered interviews etc.-everything the Goonj way. The other was a two page newsletter which was distributed on the last day of KY containing a witty take on the first three days of the festival. The team had a great learning experience altogether .We often had to work overnight for the timely publication of the newsletters especially in the KY days. All in all it was another feather in the cap of the Goonj team which is still in the age of learning.
