First ever alumni meet at Toronto, Canada on March 27-Report
@ Apr 27, 2010
view in one page and print

Report on First meet of the Canada chapter of IT-BHU Global Alumni Association

(Reported by Rahul Hari (CSE 2006). Email: rahulhsaxena@gmail.com.)

The first meeting of the Toronto chapter of IT-BHU Alumni Association was organized on 27th of March 2010. It was attended by 21 Alumni and their family members ranging from classes of 1969 to 2007. It was held at the Tandoori Flame Restaurant in Brampton, Ontario.

The meeting started with informal introductions and discussion topics ranged from Maggi noodles at the Hyderabad Gate to stories about Malaviya Ji. We also came to know about some bonus stories about Malaviya Ji from Mr. Manu Varma (Electrical 1971) since his father also happens to be an IT-BHU Alumnus. Although there was no PDP (Personality Development Program) for the juniors, Mr. Dev Kr. Tyagi from the class of 1969 sponsored the drinks for everyone in true IT-BHU senior style.

We decided that we should have a larger get together sometime soon to keep the momentum going. As a result, the next get together is planned on Saturday, May 15th 2010 at Milne Dam. Further, a new Google group has been created at itbhu-canada@groups.google.com. This group is open to all IT-BHU Alumni who are currently located in Canada or nearby regions.

The get-together was organized by Manu Varma (Electrical 1971) and Rahul Hari (CSE 2006).

Rules and Regulations for calculating points

1. The order of precedence and the number of points per publication/presentation are determined based on the points as follows

a.         Highly-reputed world-class peer-reviewed journal with Page Rank >7 (For e.g., Science, Nature, Macromolecules, Langmuir, etc.)                                     10

b.         Reputed peer-reviewed international journal with Page Rank >3 (e.g., Journal of Amer. Chem. Society)                                                                                              8

c.         Other international journal publications                                                          7

d.         International conference papers/presentations                                              6

e.         National journal publications                                                                              5

f.          National conference papers/presentations                                                       4

g.         Student conferences (1st/2nd/3rd Award receiver at any of the conferences at IITs, IISc, IT-BHU, NITs & other reputed Institutions)                                                          2

h.         Student Conferences (Others at any of the IITs, IISc, IT-BHU, NITs & other reputed Institutions)                                                                                                            0.5

2. The number of points will be determined by a sum of all the publications/presentations.

3. If there is a tie, the student who has maximum points according to the order of precedence will be awarded. For example, A has published in 1 international journal and 1 national journal, while B has presented in two international conferences; both have 18 points, but the scholarship goes to A.

4. Presentation implies oral presentation. Demonstrations, posters will be scored as

publication/ presentation minus 1 point.

5. The order of the authors in a publication is not a criterion. If two or more students are involved in the publication all the students will be considered for scoring. In case of a presentation the presenter will be considered for scoring. The rest of the student authors will be awarded main presenter minus 2 points.

6. Same subject matter published/presented at multiple locations will not be taken into consideration. The student can determine which publication/presentation should be taken into consideration. If there is a significant development after the first publication/ presentation, please submit both the publications/presentations for consideration.

Award committee will decide which is taken into final scoring.

7. GPA is not a qualification and/or rate of measure for this award. All the decisions are made by the award committee and are final.

* - Even though the name suggests that the conference is international, the points are decided based on the Affiliated Association(s)/sponsor(s), number of attendees, number of presenters, location of conference, chair person(s) of the conference, etc. The decision of award committee on the merit of a venue will be final.
