Gurukul

It was an opportunity to listen to our role models and stalwarts inspires us to greater heights! With this in mind, Anveshan hosted several guest lectures by top academicians, management gurus, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs; people who rule their fields with their brilliance and dexterity. These lectures were in the form of interactive sessions and the speakers shared with us their vision, success stories, advice etc.

Srijan, the Model Making competition

Srijan aimed at providing students with scope for imagination and explore their creative acumen by practical application of their knowledge. It was basically a manual/semi-autonomous robotics event where robots were made by the participants using motors, electronic circuits to comply with specific task to make a real-time working model of a metallurgical problem statement.

 Prashna – Industry Defined Problem

This event called upon some of the brightest mind of the country to confront with real life problems faced by industries and propose a logical solution by applying their knowledge in realm of the practical world. This gave a wonderful opportunity for students to have a practical exposure to the industrial problems.

Simulare - Simulation & Coding Event:

Struck by the insidious, computer-driven tendency to take things out of the domain of theory to the domain of practicality, Simulare gave the participants a platform to solve some fundamental problems in metallurgy by using basic programming and simulation tools. Some metallurgical problems were to be solved by using basic programming and simulation tools. The codes were built on C/C++ or Matlab.

 Stratgem - Case Study:

In this event, participants were presented with an economical, technical or social problem. The competition urged the students to analyse the specific details of the particular case and suggest a practical solution for it.

Cadence - Literary Events:

This event provided an opportunity for students to hone up their soft skills. Here the students took the centre stage to exchange their views, discuss and debate on various raging topics, in the presence of eminent judges like Dr Anupam Raghuvanshi (Head of TIME coaching, Varanasi) and Professor Anita Mohan. It also included quiz competitions where the general knowledge of students was put to test.

 Innoviz - Social Innovation Idea:

Innoviz provided a vehicle for taking student innovations from ideas to reality, Innoviz aimed at contributing to the society with a path breaking idea that revolutionizes the way society lives.

Rekrut – Mock GD/PI:

Rekrut aimed at providing the students with a firsthand experience of a Group Discussion Board and an Interview Panel. We will make the future managers and engineers ready by helping them in the first step of getting their dream job-interviews and group discussion. While coming out in flying in high colours is almost indispensible in getting a dream job, Anveshan helped them to feel the heat of the interview board.

 Informals:

A variety of informal events were conducted during Anveshan. These mind-tasks like solving Sudoku, puzzles were to engage the audience present.

About GATE Examination:

http://gate.iitm.ac.in/

432-GATE.png

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy or Master's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for Master/Doctoral programmes in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. GATE qualification, however, is not required for candidates with Master's degree in Engineering /Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy, who may be seeking scholarship/ assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.

Some institutions specify GATE as the mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist / Engineer.

_______________________________

Praharsh Sharma interviews Snehal Pawar about his achievements in GATE exam:

Q-1: Snehal, please tell us about GATE exam.

GATE score is taken for the admission in IITs and IISC for their M. Tech. programs. Also many industries take GATE score for their recruitment process eg. IOCL, NTPC, DRDO etc. Top rank holders in some GATE papers are entitled to apply for “Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship” awarded by CSIR. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/ Engineer.

Forms for GATE exam comes in the month of October and exam is conducted on the second Sunday of February. This year GATE paper consisted two sections, in 1st section, there were questions asking for CORE knowledge and in the other section 10 questions were there to judge your aptitude skills. The total marks were 100 and out of which I got 85.33. Generally a GATE score above 95 percentile is considered to be a good score.

Q-2: What advice will you give to fellow students to score better in GATE?

GATE only asks you questions on the subjects that you already have been taught to you, so GATE doesn't require any special efforts. But it is still important to be thorough with concepts. Nothing pays better than consistent hardwork. One should be regular in studies from 2nd year onwards. Revising formulas at the end also comes in handy.

Q-3: What are your plans for future?

I hope to leverage my unexpected good performance in GATE 2010. This gives me a very good oppurtunity to go for the research in IISC or IITs. But I aim for a good job experience before going for higher studies. My sole reason behind GATE was to qualify for the GD/PI stage in IOCL and I hope that I will crack that too.

Web Talk by Dr Animesh Pathak (CSE 2003) with students of the CSE Department
@ Apr 27, 2010
view in one page and print

(Reported by Mahanth K. Gowda, 4th yr Computer Engineering. Email: mahanth.gowda.cse06@itbhu.ac.in)

A web talk by an alumnus of IT-BHU, Dr. Animesh Pathak (CSE 2003) was organized on 20 March 2010 at the "Batch of 98 hall", Department of Computer Engineering, IT-BHU. The talk was organized mostly by the senior students of the CSE Department in association with ACM- IT-BHU students' chapter and around 40 students attended the talk. Skype video chat was used for the web talk with students seated in the hall with mikes, camera, and speakers, while Animesh delivered his talk from Paris.

The theme of the talk was “Some thoughts on making most of the life at CSE IT-BHU” and it was directed towards the students of the CSE department, IT-BHU. Animesh started with a very humble self-introduction and some words on the kind of work he does at INRIA. He then explained to the students the importance of internships. He spoke about the types of internships- Academic and Industrial- what one is expected to do in each kinds of these internships, advantages etc.  Most importantly, he gave some invaluable suggestions on writing good applications for internships. He then spoke about the need towards doing good projects. He stressed upon the application of analytical and theoretical skills in the development of projects, which will show that an individual is capable enough of making use of the concepts he has learnt. Such projects will be of great aid in one's endeavour for jobs/internships. He then enlightened the students on his own area i.e Research. He meticulously outlined the work of a researcher with well chosen illustrations and instances. He also spoke about time management, concentration in classes, the importance of asking questions during lectures etc.  More than all, he shared some of his own experiences of life in IT-BHU, the way one can can excel in both academic and non-academic activities. Amidst the talk, he responded to queries from students with great enthusiasm.

The discussion then shifted towards 'student-alumni interactions' and Animesh highlighted some of the ways- Internships, guidance on competitive exams, projects or even non-conventional careers- in which alumni can help the students. He also spoke of the IT-BHU Global Alumni Association (IBGAA) which has been making tireless efforts for the welfare of the student community and in reaching out to the entire network of IT-BHU alumni. He gave some useful suggestions to the students in ways of approaching the alumni and the IBGAA.

To sum up, it was a very enlightening talk, especially from the point of view of the second yearites who made the most of the audience and who will be facing some of the crucial junctures of their college life in the next few days. One could instantly notice, how the quality of CVs from CSE department improved after gaining insights from the talk, as reported by Animesh's teammates at INRIA. Two more students got selected for an internship at INRIA this year in addition to one who was already selected. The web-talk set an example of how the gap between student-alumni can be abridged and many thanks to Animesh for pioneering with such a talk. We are looking forward for more such student-alumni interactions in the future.
