Q-4: What are your future career plans?
I look forward for getting an MS degree in future. I think that if you do something, do it until you become the master so I also plan for a Masters in my field. Moreover, I have not been very much in research in these four years, so I hope I could get better opportunities for research with an MS degree.
Q-5: What advise will you give to fellow students to take part in sports and cultural activities?
Being involved in almost every activity of the college, I always advise that one must be a part of at least one sport which helps with better health and at least one activity of your choice; be it music, art or dance, which keeps you mentally fresh. Most students think that taking part in sports or other activities will affect their studies but I always could concentrate and score better in academia after getting involved in all those things. The exposure and enthusiasm for sports and cultural activities that you can get in college, you can never get after passing out.
Q-6: Please tell us about your personal life.
I really like to write poems and to read Hindi literature. I actually inherited this love for Hindi poetry from my father who is a very good Hindi poet. Music is a big part of my life-I play flute and a little bit of synthesizer and congo, listen to soft Indian music and sometimes movie songs. Pencil sketching and craft work are also my hobbies.
I am always eager to learn new things. I hope to learn tabla and violin in future.
I always love to play or watch cricket. I am a big fan of Sachin Tendulkar and his devotion in his game motivates me in all my endeavors.
I like challenges in life and always try to fight the problem, to be positive and cheerful in every condition. Even if I am a little down, my family is always there to support me.
Prachi, it was nice talking to you.
The pleasure was all mine. I just had the loveliest four years of my life. There’s still so much more to see, so much more to achieve –
“zindagi ki asli udaan abhi baaki hai,
Humare iraadon ka imtihaan abhi baaki hai.
Abhi to naapi hai bas mutthi bhar zameen,
Aage saara aasmaan baaki hai. “

Yogesh K. Upadhyaya from Chronicle took the opportunity to interview him for his teaching and research work:

(Prof. P. Rama Rao)
Q-1: Welcome, Sir. Please introduce yourself to our readers
I was born in 1937 in Kurnool Town, which was then part of the composite Madras State. It was only after 1953, when the state of Andhra Pradesh was created, that Kurnool Town became part of Andhra Pradesh.
My parents were orthodox brahmins and observed rigor at home in regard to food and other habits. My father was a leading lawyer of the Kurnool Bar. He was noted for his fiercely independent mind which was rooted in high sense of probity. Although he was a prosperous lawyer, my parents followed the dictum “waste not and want not”. They lived very frugally, abhorred waste and engaged themselves in religious activities.
I studied in Municipal High School, Kurnool where teaching was in telugu medium. When I was through with my Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, I was less than 14 years in age. I was thus below the age required for admission to any college in the state of Madras. However, I got admission into one of the best pre-independence colleges, viz., St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore of Mysore University which did not have the age restriction for admission to their colleges. St. Josephs was indeed one turning point in my life (and later encountering Professor T. R. Anantharaman was the next turning point). We had brilliant teachers during my two-year intermediate course which enabled me to perform well enough to get admitted to the Presidency College, Madras in their coveted 3-year B.Sc. (Honours) Physics course. From there I went to Andhra University to study M.Sc. (Nuclear Physics) which was introduced for the first time in that University in the year 1956. Thereafter I joined Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for PhD by research in the Department of Metallurgy. My goal was to enter the portals of IISc. and I joined the Department of Metallurgy only because one of my brilliant college mates (from Presidency College) was studying metallurgy at IISc, Bangalore.
Until 1990 or so, only Government organizations provided promising careers. At least that was the general perception. Therefore, I went into government departments during my later career.
Q-2: Please tell us about your current job as Chairman of ARCI, Hyderabad
As Chairman of International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), my role is to preside over the meetings of the Governing council where all technical activities and the budgetary matters pertaining to the Centre are discussed and approved. It is based on these approvals that the Department of Science and Technology (DST, under whose aegis ARCI functions, extends financial support.
Q-3: You held very important positions in various government undertakings:
I have held positions formally in three government departments, viz., Department of Defence Research & Development (DRDO), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department Atomic Energy (DAE).
I was Director, DMRL and was elevated to the position of Distinguished Scientist in DRDO. DRDO is mandated to provide R&D support to the development of military hardware and the associated technologies.
I held the position of Secretary to Government of India in DST. DST is the nodal department of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Besides contributing to science and technology policies of the Government of India, DST extends financial support in practically all disciplines of science. DST is known for helping open-ended research and up-and-coming individual researchers. In addition, DST also helps in bridging science and society.
In DAE, I held the position of Chairman, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). AERB is the regulatory authority for all operating nuclear reactors and the use of radioactive isotopes in various applications. AERB is an independent regulatory authority reporting directly to the Atomic Energy Commission, Government of India.
Q-4: What are the research institutes set up by you?
I had a role in setting up 6 institutions. These are the following:
* Heavy Alloy Penetrator Project (HAPP) at Tiruchirapalli which later became an Ordnance Factory to produce anti-tank ammunition.
* Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC) came into being with the help of the Department of Mines and DRDO. Its principal function is to develop technologies in a way as to allow commercialization. Barring the initial corpus, NFTDC has been self-supporting by engaging itself in contract research. In this respect, NFTDC is unique in the country.
* International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) is a product of the Integrated Long Term Programme (ILTP) of cooperation in science and technology which is a major bilateral programme between India and the Soviet Union to start with and later between India and Russia. ARCI works on selected areas such as surface coating technologies, high temperature ceramic-based materials and products developed from metallic and non-metallic powders (of nano sizes at this time).
* National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai was set up during my tenure as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Ocean Development which position I held concurrently as Secretary, DST. Until then, the Department of Ocean Development did not have any laboratory support. NIOT, Chennai was conceived as a counterpart in the east coast to the National Institute of Oceanography, a CSIR Laboratory, located in Goa on the West Coast. NIOT is principally dedicated to developing instrumentation and other devices for ocean-going applications. They are also managing a number of moored data buoys in the Bay of Bengal.
* The other two organizations, to the creation of which I had made a contribution, are Safety Research Institute (SRI) at Kalpakkam and the Technology Development Board (TDB), New Delhi.
SRI was set up as a wholly research-based organization to provide support to AERB and therefore was largely engaged in safety-related research programmes.
TDB came into being through a separate Act and was intended to provide financial support either in the form of loan, equity or grant to industries to facilitate commercialization of technologies developed in the national R&D laboratories with or without the participation of academic institutions.
Q-5: You have been teaching at Dept. of Metallurgical Engineering, IT-BHU for a long time.
I joined the Department of Metallurgy (later Department of Metallurgical Engineering), Banaras Hindu University in 1962 as Lecturer. It was during this period that I completed my doctoral research work which was started at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. This happened because Prof. T.R. Anantharaman, who was my Research Professor at Bangalore, moved to BHU and I migrated along with him from Bangalore to Banaras.
I subsequently went to University of Pennsylvania in 1966, and worked there as a post-doctoral research associate. On my return in 1967, I was appointed Reader in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and later on I became Professor of Physical Metallurgy at BHU.
Funding for research in those days at BHU was trivial by today's standards. However, the motivation was high, largely inspired by the academic leadership of Professor Anantharaman. Only research projects involving inexpensive tools had to be chosen for research to be carried out by the M. Tech and Ph.D. students. Yet, journal publications in science periodicals of repute came out in significant number. The decades of 60s and 70s were the most memorable, in hind-sight, from the point of view of the drive for original research against heavy odds.
Q-6: Please describe your college days
At the University of Pennsylvania, I carried out research related to characterization of thin films in the Laboratory for Research on Structure of Materials (LRSM) which was a brand new laboratory at the University. I was greatly inspired by the leadership of Prof. Robert Madin, Director of LRSM (now, over 90 years, interested in archeo-metallurgy). Although, the University buildings were part of the city of Philadelphia, going through the corridors of various departments of science and engineering was in itself thrilling.
At BHU, I started off living in a research scholars’ hostel (Ramakrishna hostel). Within 2 years of my hostel life at BHU, my wife, whom I had married one year earlier, joined me at Varanasi. Consequently, I left the hostel and started a home in a small flat in Durgakund, not far from BHU campus. I still remember the heavy amount of cycling I used to do between home and the department, at least four times a day. During my period at BHU, the Vice-Chancellors were Justice Bhagawati, Dr. Shrimali and Dr. Triguna Sen. The Institute of Technology was formed during the later part of my BHU days. The first Director of IT-BHU was Prof. S. S.Saluja of the Department of Mining. During most part of my days at the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, Prof. Anantharaman was the head and towards the end, when Prof. Anantharaman became Rector of the University, Prof. S. L. Malhotra took over as head.
The subjects I taught were physics of metals, dislocation theory, mechanical behaviour of metals and metal forming.
Q-7: Please tell us about your personal life
My family consists of my wife, Rekha, son Nagendra and daughter Suman. My son is a PhD (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne) in Applied Mechanics and is now located in Palo Alto, California. My daughter is a Masters in Environmental Sciences (North Carolina State University) and is now located in Princeton, New Jersey. My son married a girl from Chennai and my daughter married a boy from Hyderabad. They have 2 children each.
I am largely interested in reading. While I used to play games like Table Tennis, Tennis during my younger days, I gave them up as I became older and busier.
Besides my parents, Prof. Anantharaman has had a dominant influence in my life. I was also fortunate in having outstanding friends; some of them were gifted minds and were very scholarly. These associations have moulded my interests.
My philosophy is to be of help to those associated with science and technology institutions. Besides, I am also associated with a couple of charitable organizations.
My present mission is to work for the T.R. Anantharaman Educational and Research Foundation which seven of us, students and colleagues of Professor Anantharaman have set up at Hyderabad.

IT-BHU is hosting Railways cricket tournament. Among the stars that descended onto the field was one sporting legend, Sanjay Bangar. He is an all-rounder and has represented India in Tests and One Day Internationals.
Bangar began his career playing in the youth teams of Maharashtra and Bombay, but at state level he made his name representing Railways which he has played for since the 1993-94 season. He often opens both the bowling and batting for Railways due to his lively medium pace bowling and sound defensive batting technique.
Bangar also represented Deccan Chargers and the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL first season. Currently playing for Western Railways, we caught up with him for a quick chat during a match break when his team was on the verge of victory.
For Chronicle, Krishna Teja (1st year mechanical) interviewed him:

Q. How do you feel about the Tournament till now?
SB: It is a well contested tournament. This is a very important tournament to all departments. So every team is giving its best out there. There's a lot of competition out there.
Q. What do you think about the IT-BHU infrastructure?
SB: It’s magnificent. The sports complex is vast and supports almost every game there is. The grounds and the gymnasium are very good. If any student wants to make a profession out of sports this is the place for him/her.
Q. Please tell us about your experiences when you played for the Indian Cricket team.
SB: It was with great honour and pride that I played for the team. You get a mental satisfaction when you've done something like that. The job satisfaction that I got then is unparalleled to this day. I was proud that I played for the team.
Q. What’s your take on the IPL this season? Who do you think will win?
SB: That's a difficult question. There were a few disappointments. But still you can never say. The two most probable teams are Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers. If you ask me I pitch for RC.

India's Sanjay Bangar (L) and teammate Rahul Dravid celebrate after winning the fourth one-day international between India and West Indies in Ahmedabad on Friday (Nov. 15, 2002). India won by five wickets.
