About GATE Examination:

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy or Master's degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for Master/Doctoral programmes in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. GATE qualification, however, is not required for candidates with Master's degree in Engineering /Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy, who may be seeking scholarship/ assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.
Some institutions specify GATE as the mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist / Engineer.

Praharsh Sharma interviews Snehal Pawar about his achievements in GATE exam:
Q-1: Snehal, please tell us about GATE exam.
GATE score is taken for the admission in IITs and IISC for their M. Tech. programs. Also many industries take GATE score for their recruitment process eg. IOCL, NTPC, DRDO etc. Top rank holders in some GATE papers are entitled to apply for “Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Fellowship” awarded by CSIR. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/ Engineer.
Forms for GATE exam comes in the month of October and exam is conducted on the second Sunday of February. This year GATE paper consisted two sections, in 1st section, there were questions asking for CORE knowledge and in the other section 10 questions were there to judge your aptitude skills. The total marks were 100 and out of which I got 85.33. Generally a GATE score above 95 percentile is considered to be a good score.
Q-2: What advice will you give to fellow students to score better in GATE?
GATE only asks you questions on the subjects that you already have been taught to you, so GATE doesn't require any special efforts. But it is still important to be thorough with concepts. Nothing pays better than consistent hardwork. One should be regular in studies from 2nd year onwards. Revising formulas at the end also comes in handy.
Q-3: What are your plans for future?
I hope to leverage my unexpected good performance in GATE 2010. This gives me a very good oppurtunity to go for the research in IISC or IITs. But I aim for a good job experience before going for higher studies. My sole reason behind GATE was to qualify for the GD/PI stage in IOCL and I hope that I will crack that too.
