A web talk by an alumnus of IT-BHU, Dr. Animesh Pathak (CSE 2003) was organized on 20 March 2010 at the "Batch of 98 hall", Department of Computer Engineering, IT-BHU. The talk was organized mostly by the senior students of the CSE Department in association with ACM- IT-BHU students' chapter and around 40 students attended the talk. Skype video chat was used for the web talk with students seated in the hall with mikes, camera, and speakers, while Animesh delivered his talk from Paris.

The theme of the talk was “Some thoughts on making most of the life at CSE IT-BHU” and it was directed towards the students of the CSE department, IT-BHU. Animesh started with a very humble self-introduction and some words on the kind of work he does at INRIA. He then explained to the students the importance of internships. He spoke about the types of internships- Academic and Industrial- what one is expected to do in each kinds of these internships, advantages etc.  Most importantly, he gave some invaluable suggestions on writing good applications for internships. He then spoke about the need towards doing good projects. He stressed upon the application of analytical and theoretical skills in the development of projects, which will show that an individual is capable enough of making use of the concepts he has learnt. Such projects will be of great aid in one's endeavour for jobs/internships. He then enlightened the students on his own area i.e Research. He meticulously outlined the work of a researcher with well chosen illustrations and instances. He also spoke about time management, concentration in classes, the importance of asking questions during lectures etc.  More than all, he shared some of his own experiences of life in IT-BHU, the way one can can excel in both academic and non-academic activities. Amidst the talk, he responded to queries from students with great enthusiasm.

The discussion then shifted towards 'student-alumni interactions' and Animesh highlighted some of the ways- Internships, guidance on competitive exams, projects or even non-conventional careers- in which alumni can help the students. He also spoke of the IT-BHU Global Alumni Association (IBGAA) which has been making tireless efforts for the welfare of the student community and in reaching out to the entire network of IT-BHU alumni. He gave some useful suggestions to the students in ways of approaching the alumni and the IBGAA.

To sum up, it was a very enlightening talk, especially from the point of view of the second yearites who made the most of the audience and who will be facing some of the crucial junctures of their college life in the next few days. One could instantly notice, how the quality of CVs from CSE department improved after gaining insights from the talk, as reported by Animesh's teammates at INRIA. Two more students got selected for an internship at INRIA this year in addition to one who was already selected. The web-talk set an example of how the gap between student-alumni can be abridged and many thanks to Animesh for pioneering with such a talk. We are looking forward for more such student-alumni interactions in the future.
