Interview of Akash Anand, JEE topper
@ Aug 28, 2010
view in one page and print

The ‘IT-Kholu’ (IIT-JEE topper among incoming students for the 2010-11 session) is a laidback 17 year old, Akash Anand. He has opted for B. Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering with IT-JEE All India Rank of 1558.

411-akash.png

(Akash Anand)

He was interviewed by Aviral Srivastava (B. Tech. Part-III, Mechanical) for Chronicle. Here is what he had to say in an interview with the Chronicle:

_______________________

CHRONICLE: Congrats Akash! So how does it feel to be the JEE Topper or the ‘IT-Kholu’ for the batch of 2014?

Akash: Thanks! Yeah, it feels nice. But I am really not that excited about it. After all, the real adventure’s only just begun!

CHRONICLE: Tell us something about yourself, Akash.

Akash: I was born in the holy city of Varanasi and I guess one of the reasons I chose ITBHU was my attachment to this city! My father is a bank officer in the Kashi Gomti Samyut Grameen Bank and my mother is a housewife. I studied in Children’s College, Azamgarh till Class 10 and secured 95% in my Board exams. I studied the next two years in Kota at Bansal and Vibrant Institute.

CHRONICLE: So, why did you opt for B. Tech in CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) at IT-BHU?

Akash: I did not have any particular interest in CSE but I felt that it is a rewarding branch with lesser academic burden. I could have opted for Electrical or Mechanical in IIT-Roorkee. My mother also wished that I take up Chemical Engineering at IIT-Kanpur. However, given the reputation of IT-BHU and the Computer Science and Engineering branch, I ultimately decided in favour of the best branch-and-brand combination.

CHRONICLE: How good has been the decision (CSE, IT-BHU) so far?

Akash: Well, I am very happy with my decision of choosing IT-BHU and totally satisfied with what I am getting here. College has been a fantastic experience so far.

CHRONICLE: Tell us something about your interests, hobbies and your plans for the future.

Akash: I love reading novels. My favourite author is Dan Brown. I have read all his novels and especially loved “Da Vinci Code”. Presently I wish to take up a job after B. Tech and maybe pursue an M. Tech after adequate job experience.

CHRONICLE: We wish you all the best Akash. Thanks for your time and concern.

Akash: Thank you very much.

About summer internship reports
@ Aug 28, 2010
view in one page and print

We are pleased to publish first hand reports about summer internships from our students. There are two reports in this issue. One report is from Nishant Kumar, who took training at INRIA, France-a prestigious academic institute in the world. He was able to get summer internship due to efforts by our alumnus, Animesh Pathak, who works there as Research Scientist after completing his post-doc study there. We invite our alumni to help our students to find suitable summer internships at their workplace/institute. Getting internships at suitable places is still a burning issue for our students.

Other report is from Navin Hemani who took training ay Kansai Nerolac Paints, Jainpur, UP. Being a 2nd year student at that time, it was difficult for him to find a suitable internship in his chemical engineering field. After much effort and help from Kiran Nayak, (our alumnus who is General Manager at Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd.) he found one, and his report testifies it. We hope this will inspire our students in 2nd year to search for summer internship of their choice.

We invite our students to send their first hand experience about summer internship for publishing it chronicle. We shall randomly select few entries to be published in September/October issues of chronicle.

Send your entries to: chronicle@itbhuglobal.org.

Summer Internship at INRIA, France by Nishant Kumar-First Hand Report

(Nishant Kumar is final year student of Computer Science and Engineering.  He can be reached at: nishant.cse07@gmail.com).

(Nishant Kumar)

I pursued my Summer Internship at ARLES Project-Team, INRIA, France
for duration of 8 weeks (May-July 2010). I worked under the direct supervision of
Dr. Alessandra Toninelli [1] and Dr. Animesh Pathak [2].

Dr. Animesh Pathak is an alumnus of ITBHU. He is a graduate of CSE 2003 batch and received a PhD in Computer Engineering at the University of Southern California [3], LA in 2008.  He is currently a researcher at project-team ARLES at INRIA.
He along with his colleague (Dr. Alessandra Toninelli) notified all students of
CSE Part III in March 2010 of an opening for a summer internship at their research group to work on “Middleware for Managing Mobile Social Ecosystem”. I followed up the notification and had an online interview taken by them. Finally, I was selected for the internship.

INRIA and the ARLES Project Group

INRIA [4] ( Institut national de recherche en informatique et en automatique,
in English: National Institute for Research in Computer and Control Sciences)
was established in 1967 at Rocquencourt near Paris. Under the supervision of
French Ministry of National Education, Advanced Instruction and Research and
the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry, INRIA does research in theoretical
and Applied Computer Science. It has produced a number of widely used products
like Scilab, TOM etc. Based on areas of research, INRIA is organized into several autonomous project teams. I was a part of the ARLES Project-Team [5] with around
15 members lead by Valérie Issarny [6]. ARLES investigates solutions to
architecture-based development of distributed systems

The atmosphere at INRIA is tailor made for research and development. One gets to interact with the most eminent of the researchers. Visitors, frequently invited from diverse fields, give enlightening talks on their areas of research. The office infrastructure equipped with seminar rooms, review rooms, white-boards form an excellent and ideal atmosphere for research.

Specifics about my work and experience

My work during the internship was entitled as Data Extraction in Mobile Social Ecosystem. It was carried out under the guidance of Alessandra Toninelli and Animesh Pathak. I designed a Data Extraction Manager (DEM) for Android phone.
It was a part of the ongoing work at ARLES projet-team to develop a middleware for managing Mobile Social Ecosystem. My work also includes assessment of existing techniques to process graph based data (e.g. RDF) on Android phone. I analyzed different framework and finally implemented Androjena library on Android phone.

I got a first-hand experience on Web semantics, Jena, Sesame, JRDF, Piglet, Ontology, Android. I got full support and guidance from my mentors at every required stage of the project. Moreover, I got exposure to talks and seminars on various topics by eminent researchers from different places e.g. Florida, London. I also got interaction with researchers from Greece, Tehran, China, Italy, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India who were working in numerable fields at INRIA. In a nutshell, the work experience was a perfect sample of a research life.

Compensation Received/Monetary arrangements

I was given free air tickets by INRIA for onward and return journey. Moreover,
I used to receive a stipend of 900 euros/month from EGIDE (Égide is an organization managing international exchange programs for foreign grant-holder students and interns on courses in France or abroad), during my stay in Paris. This was enough not only for a decent living in Paris but also for touring the entire city. Without having any visa related restrictions in Europe, some of my friends had also toured nearby countries - Switzerland, Italy, Netherland.

Accommodation and Living

I was accommodated at La Clairere (A hostel sort of a residential building) near INRIA where people from diverse backgrounds and regions used to live. The rent for my room was 14 euros per day. I shared the dining hall, kitchen, TV room etc with them and even played a number of games like Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis and Badminton. For non-vegetarians, Europe is a paradise as far as food is concerned. Living a vegetarian in Europe is a bit hard according to many, but fruits, salad, pizza, pasta, boiled vegetable soups, rice, hot French fries, eggs etc makes a balanced diet. I even used to cook occasionally whenever I missed Indian food. I got completely used to a living in a foreign land.

Ending Notes

To recapitulate, my internship gave me a perfect sample of research and development life and a complete exposure to a foreign life. A judiciously selected foreign internship should, give an individual, a strong exposure to new areas, broaden his perspectives and enrich his knowledge. The skills gained will certainly prove very beneficial in one's pursuit for opting research as a future career.

Summer internship at Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd., Jainpur, UP by Navin Hemani-First hand report
@ Aug 28, 2010
view in one page and print

(Navin Hemani is 3rd year student of Chemical Engineering.  He can be reached at: navin.hemani.che08@itbhu.ac.in).

__________________________________________

This summer I got an opportunity to undergo my summer internship at “Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd.” Jainpur plant, Kanpur. (http://www.nerolac.com/index.jsp).

432-hemani.png

(Navin Hemani)

Kansai Paints Co. Ltd., is the number one paint company in Japan. It is a global leader in innovation and is known best for its product innovation, R&D and sensitivity towards the environment, Kansai commands a leadership position in providing state-of-the-art solutions in décor and in industrial applications in South East Asia, also parts of Africa, Europe and America.

Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd is a subsidiary of Japan based Kansai Paint Company Limited, which is one of the top ten coating companies in the world. It usually invites applications for 3rd year students. But being a 2nd yearite I had to apply on my own. Therefore I contacted Mr. Kiran Nayak (Chemical 1983), General Manager, Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd., Mumbai.

I must say that the experience as a trainee there was way beyond expectations. I got to work on two projects, which were “Determination of charging time of the ball mill”; and “Minimization and tracking of losses in production of primer.” I got the opportunity to devise a method which could reduce the losses in production of primer and could work for company’s benefit.

I learned a lot of practical applications of the 4th semester course “fluid particle Mechanics and mechanical operations.” This was my first experience to work in a professional environment and I must say that working in a professional project is way different from the usual academics ones.

I also got a chance to work in the sophisticated quality control and testing lab of the company, and the experience which I gained there was over the edge.

My guides and mentors were very helpful Mr. Lokendra Singh Chauhan (HOD) production department, Mr. Rajesh Kumar Singh (HOD, filling department), Mr. Manish Yadav (HOD) guided me in every way possible. It was a very flexible and cool place to work.

Since I wasn’t provided with any accommodation or stipend, I had to bear all that on my own.  But at the end of I must say that overall experience was really great and helped me learn many technical know-how applications and I also made contacts with various influential people there, which might help me in future endeavors.

My advice to 2nd year students is that, start searching for internships as early as possible and start building contacts with the alumni, 2nd year internships are not that easy to grab. Industrial intern is much better option for 2nd year summer internships instead of some research project.
