(Report forwarded by Devender Singh Maun, B. Tech. part-IV, Ceramic Engineering. Email: devender.maun@gmail.com)
Robotics club, Co-curricular activities (CCA) wing, IT-gymkhana has launched an intralan website containing online learning material for students of IT-BHU. Website contains presentations, which are usually given during workshops organized by CCA wing for varying fields ranging from aeromodelling to electronics, tutorials and e-books.
There was a sort of tradition in IT-BHU where senior students (mostly in 4th year) used to make tutorials for juniors batches of whatever they have learnt in four-years. All these tutorials were usually updated and shared before Technex especially for the event Modex, providing students with sufficient knowledge required to build their own models. Unfortunately, from past few years Technex could not be organized and this tradition was lost. But, with the announcement of Technex’2011 dates as 4th-6th March, this year’s team revived this tradition and that too in a way that it will remain permanently, by launching first-ever online tutorial facility for IT-BHU students.

Website is an intralan website i.e. those accessing internet from BHU premises alone can have access. URL of the website is http://itlib.bhu.ac.in/robotics and is currently sharing more than 100 tutorials through presentations, articles and PDF files. CCA wing has planned to make it public for general view but only after resolving copyright issues and necessary permissions. Revenue, if any, generated will be used for technical activities at IT-BHU. Anyone on BHU campus can access the website but limited access has been given for non-registered users. Any IT-BHU students with valid id can become member and have access to all the tutorials free of cost.
Content in the website has been made by students, taken from websites and is divided in three sections. First section contains brief and to-the-point knowledge in form of presentations in the fields of: aeromodelling, electronics, simulation tools, mechanical, materials science, and hardware like motors, etc. Second section contains articles written on various concepts and topics related to practical knowledge like electronics, mechanical, etc. Third section contains knowledge in the form of books, sample projects, projects from seniors, etc. There is forum facility in the website where students can post their problems and get advice from moderators which are seniors (3rd and 4th year).
CCA wing has planned to upload some video tutorial for more effective learning. Apart from this, CCA wing plans to take this website online for students from other colleges and that will make it first online-learning website for college students made by students.
Website doesn’t cover topics related to academics and is focusing on practical aspects of concepts with the aim to empower students with technical knowledge. For example, in mechanical section information about use of various motors is given, in simulation section information regarding use of tools like MATLAB, Mathematica is given, in electronics various microcontrollers and datasheet of various circuits has been provided, and topics like serial port and parallel port interfacing has been covered. Some of these topics are not covered in academics curriculum but are very important in today’s world.
Students have started using website and there have been more than 200 downloads/day of tutorials especially presentations. One of the students, Vishnu of 3rd Mathematics and Computing told us, “Robotics club and its activities creates a platform to learn discuss and apply basics to engineering which an engineer is not given an opportunity in his/her regular curriculum. The website helps in doing the same in a more organized manner making easier to find people to discuss and clarify simple questions, and find people to do interesting projects”. Milind Bhamawat, IDD 5th year electrical, a student who has been involved in technical activities from 2nd year told us that, “It is a good start and I think it will be very beneficial for students and future batches to come.”
Website has been designed by Kaustubh Kumar, Satyam Purwar, Satyam Mandloi and Akshay Samadhiya. Content has been contributed by technical teams from 3rd year and 4th year of Technex’2011.
