Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao Memorial Science Quiz organized-Report

We are pleased to publish the report on Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao Memorial Science Quiz for school children held on October 26. The quiz was held at National Metallurgical Laboratories, Jamshedpur, in which 25 schools participated. The quiz was held in the memory of late Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao. The quiz was jointly sponsored by Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao memorial Fund and National Metallurgical Laboratories, Jamshedpur.

Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao (1942-2010) was a student, faculty member of our institute and also served as Vice-Chancellor of our university. He was among the leading metallurgists in India.

Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao Memorial Science Quiz: A brief report

Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao Memorial maiden science–quiz for students of classes eight, nine and ten was held on the 26^th of October 2010 at the National Metallurgical Laboratory Auditorium. It was a pleasure for the organising committee to put together this Science–Quiz keeping in mind, Prof. Rao’s affection for children and his constant emphasis on dissemination of knowledge to the school level. The Director’s welcome address was elaborate which weaved together many lesser known facts about Prof. Rao’s life.

We were blessed to have Mrs. Sudha Rao, spouse of Prof. Rao, as the chief guest of the Event. Her address to the school kids was really touching in which she emphasized the need for children to read, read and read more- the mantra Prof. Rao believed in. The Quiz Master was Dr. Shantanu Chakraborti, an employee of TATA STEEL and well-known in the country for conducting Quizzes, his personal association with Prof. Rao really made the event special because he was passionately involved in all aspects of the Quiz. Seventy-five children from 25 reputed schools of Jamshedpur participated in the event which lasted for close to two hours and consisted of eight rounds. The rounds, were different and tickled almost all areas of the brain, they were--Alpha Numeric, Our world-Your world, Connect the Disconnected, Metals and Materials, Shining Scientists, Experimental Excitement, Friendly Fight and Quick Bullets.

Five schools were short-listed after a written test of 30 min, which included some real smart questions and even a cross-word. The schools which made it to the STAGE were J. H. Tarapore, Little Flower, Tagore Academy, Loyola and Kerala Samajam Model School and it is worth mentioning that all these 15 children have been given an annual subscription of Down to Earth Magazine. The School which was proclaimed the winner was J. H. Tarapore and all the three kids were given lovely gift hampers worth Rs 3000/- each consisting of books, CDs, a flash drive and cash. The runners up team was from Little Flower school, a close finish with just two points away was also given similar gift hampers worth Rs 2000/. In addition, both the schools got two trophies each, one for the Quiz and the other as the official memento of NML’s Diamond Jubilee being celebrated this year on the 26^th of November. It was a packed auditorium and the event was videographed /photographed and covered well by the Local Press. The official sponsor of the Quiz this year was Materials Research Society of India (MRSI), Jamshedpur Chapter in addition to some individual sponsors.
