Report on International Conference on Recent Advances in Pharmaceutical Sciences (ICRAPS-2010)

A two day International Conference on “Recent Advances in Pharmaceutical Sciences” was organized by Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University on December 22-23, 2010 to commemorate the sesquicentennial birth anniversary celebrations of Mahamana Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviyaji, the great visionary, patriot and founder of Banaras Hindu University.

About 600 delegates from Academia and Industry participated in the conference. The dignitaries were accorded a warm welcome by the Chairman of the Conference, Prof. R. S. Srivastava and the Organizing Secretary, Dr. Sushant K. Shrivastava. The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Piyush Trivedi, Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi Technical University (RGTU), Bhopal. In his inaugural address he stressed on the urgent need to build a consortium of pharmaceutics, biomedical engineering, biochemical engineering and electronics engineering to tackle the challenges of life threatening diseases like cancer and malaria. Presiding over the inaugural function, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University Dr. D.P. Singh stressed on the need to upgrade the existing interdisciplinary model within the university to provide a possible solution to the emerging problems. Guest of honour Dr. Abharam Patani from Hyderabad was bestowed upon the life time achievement award during the conference for his outstanding contribution in research and as an industrialist in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The plenary sessions started with a presentation by Prof. Kattesh V. Katti, Director, University of Missouri, Cancer Nanotechnology Platform on “Green Nanotechnology in Molecular Imaging and Therapy of Cancers”. In his talk he gave an insight on the role of plants and plant species for the production of nanoparticles which is directly related to the creation of an important symbiosis between Nanotechnology and Green Chemistry.

 Dr. Sibu Chakrabarti, a practicing pharmacist and consultant from New York, USA gave a talk on “So, you want to build a biotech company” in which he gave an overview of the different biotech business models which one can adopt to launch a successful biotech enterprise.

Prof. Krishna Kumar of Howard University, USA highlighted the emerging challenges and new dimensions of pharmaceutics, stressing the need for development of new formulations.  Prof. S. S. Agrawal, OSD, DIPSAR, New Delhi, in his presentation stressed on an urgent need for standardization of preparations of cosmetics in the country.

In his talk entitled “Quality by Design (QbD) – A new paradigm for design and development of pharmaceutical products” Dr. Suneel Rastogi, Research Manager at Covidien, Greater St. Louis Area, MO, USA stressed on the objective of pharmaceutical development to design a product and process to consistently deliver the intended product performance.  He gave an insight about Quality by Design (QbD) approach to drug product development based on sound science and quality risk management; as well as its advantages over the traditional approaches which are often empirical and quality is ensured only by rigid specifications and extensive testing. 

Other eminent speakers who shared their views on various recent advances in pharmaceutical sciences during the plenary sessions included, Prof. S. R. Dhaneshwar, Vice Principal, Poona College of Pharmacy, Pune; Prof J.S. Dangi of Guru Ghasidas Central University  Bilaspur;  Prof. M.R. Yadav from M.S. University Baroda; Prof. V. R Sinha of Panjab University Chandigarh; Dr. H. K. Singh, Ex. Dy. Director, CDRI Lucknow; Prof. Subhini A. Saraf, Director BBDNITM Lucknow and Prof. Shailendra Saraf, Director (Pharmacy) NIEC Lucknow.

In order to encourage the development of scientific temperament and soft skills among the students a scientific poster session related to various spheres of pharmaceutical research was also held during the conference. Ms. Pooja Upadhyay of Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences bagged the best poster presentation award in Pharmaceutics for her poster entitled “Preparation and optimization of Tamoxifen Citrate Nanosuspension for targeted drug release in breast cancer cells”.

 In Pharmaceutical Chemistry the best poster award was awarded to Mr. Chandan Prasad Kashyap from Rayt Bahra Institute of Pharmacy, Mohali Panjab for his poster entitled “Development of Validated UV-Visible Spectrophotometric Method For Simultaneous Estimation Of Esomeprazole And Ondansetron as API and in Tablet Dosage Form” and Ms. Shruti Swaraj of Panjab University for her poster entitled “Indomethacin-thymol codrug as Gastrosparing NSAIDs.

Mr. Mohd. Arief from Kashmir University was adjudged with the best poster award in Pharmacognosy for his poster entitled “Investigation of Medicinal value of Epimedium Elatum on the basis of pharmacologically active constituents Icariin and Icariside-II.” The best poster award in Pharmacology was conferred upon Ms. Bhagwati Saxena from Department of Pharmaceutics, IT-BHU for her poster entitled “Effect of Citalopram in Stress Related Mucosal Disorder (SRMD) in CRS model” and Mr. Debasis Sahu of Roland Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences Odisha for his presentation on “Involvement of Monoaminergic System in antidepressant like activity of Zizyphus Jujuba leaf extract.”

The International Conference concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by the Organizing Secretary Dr. Sushant K. Shrivastava. In his valedictory speech, he thanked all the members of the local organizing committee for their support and guidance to organize a scientific congregation of this stature.
