Prof. B. N. Dwivedi (Department of Engineering Physics) receives India Gandhi Prize

Prof. B. N. Dwivedi (Professor & Head, Department of Engineering Physics) received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Popularization of Science (2011) at an award ceremony held at Rajghat Besant School, Varanasi on 18 February 2011. The Award was given by Indian National Science Academy.

He showed a ~ 12 min movie

(cf.,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgwRVyXneNc&feature=player_embedded) on "Educating People when the Sun smiles at the Ganges" (He had prepared the movie for this unique event which was released by Prof. T. V. Ramakrishnan & Prof. P. Krishna). Prof. Dwivedi also delivered the Award Lecture on “What Makes the Sun Shine?” The citation was read by Prof. Dhananjai Pandey (School of Material Science & Technology), IT-BHU which followed the presentation of the Prize by Professor T. V. Ramakrishnan, FRS, Emeritus Professor, BHU.

Popularization of Science     Indira Gandhi Prize for Popularization of Science

The award was instituted by the Academy in 1986 to encourage and recognize popularization of science in the country. The prize shall be awarded once in three years for outstanding work done by an individual for the popularization of science in any Indian language, including English. The nominee must have had a distinguished career as a writer, editor, journalist, lecturer, radio or television programme director, science photographer or as an illustrator, which has enabled him/her to interpret science (including medicine), research and technology to the public. He/ She should have a knowledge of the role of science, technology and research in the enrichment of cultural heritage and in solution of problems of humanity. The first award was made in 1986.
