We are pleased to state that Prof. Yoginder Paul Chugh (Mining 1961) has won SME (Society for Mining, metallurgy & Exploration) Distinguished member Class of 2011 Award. He is Professor and Director, Combustion Byproducts Recycling Consortium- Midwestern Region for Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois, USA.
About the Award
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) is an international society of professionals in the minerals industry. The SME membership is more than 12,000 strong, with members in nearly 100 countries. A member society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), SME's roots date back to 1871.
The SME Distinguished Member Award is awarded to a long-standing member who has demonstrated sustained outstanding contributions to the minerals industry as a leader in exploration, production, manufacturing, environment, basic sciences, engineering applications, education, management or public relations. Contributions may be evidenced by patents, technical papers, educational activities or managerial contributions. Only about 1.8% of the members are awarded this honor.
About the citation
Chugh has been at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) since 1977 and is currently a Professor of Mining and Mineral Resources Engineering. He has BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Mining Engineering; the latter two from the Pennsylvania State University in 1968 and 1971. Currently, he is active in rock mechanics and ground control and dust control research.
Students are the first love for Chugh. He wants them to excel in whatever they choose, and assists them to achieve their goals. At the undergraduate level, he emphasizes fundamentals of science and engineering and interdisciplinary topics. At the graduate level, he strives for cutting-edge research that can be commercialized for social and economic good. International linkages are an integral part of his teaching and research excellence. To date, he has graduated over 60 MS and PhD students. Currently he is guiding five PhD and two MS students. He enjoys training PhD level students to be faculty members. At SIUC he has attracted over $20 million in external research funds.
His major scholastic awards include Department Outstanding Teacher Awards; Professor of the Year Award from National Stone Association; Invited Professorships in USA, India, Brazil, China, Singapore; Adjunct Professorship at the Indian School of Mines; Fulbright Fellowship; and international linkages programs with Poland, China, Brazil, and India. He won the College Outstanding Scholar, Outstanding Faculty, and Outstanding Teacher Awards. He also received the Illinois Mining Institute Award of Excellence for Technical Support in 2008, two national level awards in 2009; The Rock Mechanics, and the Howard N. Eavenson Awards, and IMI Honorary member Award in 2010. He has been a member of SME since 1965 and served on the Accreditation Board.
