IT-BHU students unleash their robots

VARANASI: The 3-day all-India techno-management festival 'Mettle-2011', of the mining society under the department of mining engineering, Institute of Technology (IT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), kick-started on Thursday.

A robotics event 'Geomac' featuring a number of manually controlled robots capable of passing through rugged terrains with circular bends attracted maximum attention of young engineering students and visitors from different parts of the country on the inaugural day.

As per Vishwa Mohan, student convener of the fest, 40 robots including 15 wireless ones developed at various engineering institutes including IT-BHU, ISM (Dhanbad) and NITs, participated in the enthralling contest.

Students showed their technical skills in mine machinery and automation in this event.

Similarly, 'Agrimensura' - a surveying event of the festival also started on the inaugural day, as budding engineers tested their surveying skills with limited resources at their disposal.

The event also tested the ability of young technocrats to work in teams and improvise in situations of crisis to rely on their surveying knowledge.

Earlier, V K Singh, president, coal mining, Reliance Power, inaugurated the three-day fest being organised as part of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Pt Madan Mohan Malaviya, founder of BHU, who also established the oldest mining engineering college in the country in the university campus.

Stressing the need to come up with thermal efficient mines, he laid emphasis on ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions resulting from fires after washing of coal.

IT-BHU director K P Singh, dean G N Agrawal, department head B K Srivastava, chairman and professor-in-charge, mining society, S K Sharma and other senior faculty members were also present on the occasion.

It may be mentioned here that as many as 30 colleges of engineering and allied disciplines from across the country are participating in the all India techno-management festival.
