VARANASI: Sensing the increase in applications and growing strength of various faculties due to implementation of 27% reservation under OBC quota at the Banaras Hindu University, the varsity administration is eyeing on construction of new hostels for accommodation of outstation candidates this year.
While the construction of nine new hostels under various faculties of the university is in progress, nearly half of them are looking on the verge of completion, ready for accommodating students with the start of the new academic session (2011-12) this year. Also, sensing the rising number of girls taking admission to various UG and PG courses at the university, two new girls' hostels are also set to be completed this year.
Talking to TOI on Thursday, dean of students R Tripathi said "between four to five new hostels are all set to be ready for accommodating students with the start of new academic session that would begin in July this year."
The remaining hostels would be ready to accommodate students in the next academic session (2012-13). It would reduce burden on hostels, where doubling or tripling (sharing two or three students in a room) is being done to accommodate students.
It may be mentioned here that there are a total of 64 hostels under BHU that accommodate around 15,000 students. As many as four hostels (three for boys and one for girls) are situated on Rajiv Gandhi South Campus (Brakchha, Mirzapur).
