VARANASI: The establishment of a college of veterinary sciences under Banaras Hindu University promises to change the face of discipline besides improving milk production in the east UP region.
As per AK Srivastava, director, National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal (Haryana), there is a lack of awareness and education about scientific rearing of cattle (milch animals) and the establishment of the veterinary college will go a long way in improving the situation in the region. Saying that UP had the highest livestock populations in the country witnessing nearly 20 million tons of milk production out of total of 1,200 million tons produced in the country, the veterinary expert also emphasised that the state had the highest load of veterinary doctors (one veterinary doctor for over 25,000 cattleheads) against the recommended load of one veterinary doctor for 5,000 cattleheads by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI).
It may be mentioned here that UP has only two veterinary colleges, one under Narendra Dev Agriculture University (Faizabad) and other at Meerut Agriculture University, both state agriculture universities. Similarly, Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), one of institutes under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is situated at Izzatnagar (Bareilly) in west UP.
According to MP Yadav, former director, IVRI, though the state leads in terms of dairy, meat, fish and egg production, it has the potential to double the production. Nearly 80% of farmers in UP rear Murrah breed, considered as the best breed of buffaloes in the country. "But, the average milk production from these animals is low as compared to other parts of the country where scientific rearing and diverse agricultural activities have been promoted," he added.
As per Alok Jha, coordinator, Centre for Food Science and Technology, the average milk production of 1,200 gm (just over a litre) per animal which is 10 times lower than average milk production per animal in European and developed countries. "The milk production per animal in east UP is even lower than the national figure," he added.
