VARANASI: Bringing laurels to the Banaras Hindu University in the field of research on Drosophila, BN Singh, professor of zoology, faculty of science, BHU has been positioned at 24th position in the list of 34 most prolific researchers on Drosophila at global level.

As per reports of varsity spokesperson on Friday, BN Singh is the only Drosophila researcher from India to be included on the prestigious list. The list has been prepared from the contributions made by over 48,000 researchers across the world in the field of Drosophila research from the year 1990 to 2008.
It may be mentioned here that Dr Singh has published more than 200 articles (research papers, reviews, chapters in books and others) in national and international journals of repute. He has made significant contributions in the field of evolutionary genetics by employing Indian species of Drosophila and his work is highly cited by others. His PhD thesis on population genetics of Drosophila ananassae was highly commended by the foreign examiner Theodosius Dobzhansky from the US, the leading evolutionary geneticist of his time.

Fruit fly
Drosophila is a genus of small flies, belonging to the family Drosophilidae, whose members are often called "fruit flies" or more appropriately (though less frequently) pomace flies, vinegar flies, or wine flies, a reference to the characteristic of many species to linger around overripe or rotting fruit.

Welcome to Department of Zoology
(Centre of Advanced Study, DST-FIST Supported Department, (Estd. 1921)
Brief write-up about the Department
Founded in 1921, the Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University has been one of the leading departments in the country. It has not only provided up-to-date teaching resources but also taken lead in introducing newer disciplines to the teaching curricula. Thus, introduction of subjects such as Genetics, Ecology, Endocrinology, Biochemistry, and Evolution in the decade of sixties in the teaching curricula, much ahead of other departments in the country, helped develop the understanding of Biology as a living, growing science.

Brief write-up on area of specialization/awards/achievements:
The area of specialization is Evolutionary Genetics with particular reference to the work done on population and behaviour genetics of Indian species of Drosophila. The important findings pertain to the role of natural selection and random genetic drift, dynamics of inversion polymorphism, heterosis, balanced polymorphism, genetic coadaptation, linkage disequilibrium, population substructuring, sexual isolation, sexual selection, genetic basis of hybrid male sterility, fluctuating asymmetry, trade-offs, genetic variance and thermal adaptation, size-dependent sexual selection, rare-male mating advantage, female remating and sperm displacement which are of considerable evolutionary significance. Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India, and Indian Society of Genetics & Plant Breeding; Recipient of Gold Medal of Zoological Society of India
