JODHPUR: The new campus of the IIT-R, to be constructed about 25 km from Jodhpur at Karwad village on Jodhpur-Nagaur Highway, will be an environmental masterpiece, one of the most eco-friendly green institutions the nation has today. According to experts, this campus is likely to have a temperature at least 10 degrees lower than outside because of the design.
The possession of the land was given to the IIT-R by the divisional commissioner a couple of months ago and the IIT administration is drawing up a master plan for the campus, which will be spread over 872 acres, of which 196 acres has been earmarked for various centres of excellence. P K Kalra, institute director, said by the time, the Environmental Impact Assessment for environmental clearance is complete, which is expected to take 1 year at the most, we will have our master plan ready for the campus followed by the ecological and hydrological surveys of the location. "Based upon the completion of these formalities, we hope to begin construction sometime between July and December 2012 and complete first phase to correspond with the 2013-14 session," he said. Meanwhile, construction of the boundary wall is set to begin soon.
Kalra said the campus will be developed keeping in mind the local environmental conditions. This campus will be independent in terms of its energy and water requirements and will be completely eco-friendly. The energy needs of the campus will be met by its own 10 MW solar power plant keeping the 10 years energy need of the IIT-R in mind. "But with the spurt in the energy requirement in future following the addition of the features, we will expand the plant further", he added.
