Impressive show by IT-BHU.
The inter faculty football tournament was held from 15-20 October in the Amphi-theatre ground. The IT-BHU team was confidant and energetic after an emphatic performance in the sports meet at IIT Kanpur, where IT-BHU’s defence was widely appreciated and very difficult to be broken. The enthusiasm showed by each and every one of the players impressed one and all, supporters and opponents alike.
In the first match IT-BHU put up a dominating performance against not-so-prominent agricultural science team. The score line after the match read 4-0 with goals netted by Shashank Ganesh, Nitin Upadhyay, the captain and a duo by Navneet Tomar.
Even though they were the underdogs against a strong Commerce team, the emphatic victory in the first round had given them the confidence to look ahead of reaching the finals, a remarkable feat in itself! After surviving a few scary moments, IT managed to hold its head high and given a good fight with Kranti Kumar scoring the winner for IT-BHU and making its way to the finals.
As expected the formidable Arts team had made their way easily into the finals with their captain scoring a hat-trick in the semi’s. Most felt that it would be a cake walk for the arts team as they were on a four year winning streak. With IT having a bad history with Arts losing 5-1 and 3-0 in the previous encounters the players as well as the officials thought nothing mush was left in the finals. Not surprisingly the match started with the Arts team dominating the game with their precise passes and ball possession. Yet IT-BHU team was not willing to give up and managed to hold its nerve, to get to a fighting draw, till the final whistle. It was time for a nail biting penalty shootout! The two teams could not be parted even after the initial five rounds of kicks. The score standing at 3-a-piece. It couldn’t have got better with the finals of a tournament reaching the rounds of ‘Sudden Death’ in penalties where each team takes a kick one after the other and any team which falls back -loses. Under immense pressure, IT-BHU missed the target and there ended the match with IT turning out to be the proud runners up. Though they lost the match, they gained respect!!
The success of this IT team can be credited not only to the players, due to their efforts on and off the field, but also to the strong bench strength! The team looks set to continue its winning ways for the next few years as there is lot of talent and enthusiasm among the first years! Hoping for the best for the IT-BHU football team.
