IIT-BHU director selection: Handpicking chances bright
Thursday, 12 July 2012 23:50 Deepak Kumar Jha | New Delhi
After granting full-fledged IIT status to IT-BHU, the HRD Ministry has initiated the process to appoint its Director.
The institution, recently established as IIT-BHU through Act of Parliament, has also sought for a vision statement for the institution from the prospective applicants.
Sources said that although the Director’s appointment will follow the normal selection-cum-search committee procedures, the possibility of the HRD Ministry ‘handpicking’ the Director of IIT-BHU cannot be ruled out.
“Since most of the Directors who by default are also chairmen of the respective Senates had given sleepless nights to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal recently, the chances of the new IIT-BHU Director being handpicked looks bright,” sources said.
“The Director will be appointed after obtaining the approval of the competent authority based on the recommendation made by the search-cum-selection committee. The appointment will be on contractual basis for a period of five years or till the attainment of 70 years, whichever is earlier, as per usual terms and conditions,” said a top HRD Ministry official.
The HRD Ministry through the Joint Secretary Technical Education is likely to issue the notification during the next couple of days and will invite applications which will be forwarded to the search and selection committee by the beginning of September 2012.
Since IITs are autonomous institutions fully funded by HRD, the Directors are appointed by the Ministry who then is either a member or part of the highest decision are making body of Council of IIT.
The Institute of Technology (Amendment) Bill 2011, granted the status of Indian Institute of Technology to IT-BHU passed by the both the Houses of Parliament. Unlike other IITs that are autonomous, BHU Vice-Chancellor will be the chairman of the board of directors of IIT-BHU for three years and the new appointee will report to him. Subsequently, he will nominate either himself or any of his nominees as vice-chairman so that there is a permanent linkage between the IIT and the BHU.
Other appointments in the process are two members for board of directors of IIT (BHU) who will be sent by the Executive Council of BHU and three members will also be nominated by the Executive Council of the BHU to the Senate of IIT-BHU.
