(Report forwarded by Dr. Arvind Sinha. Email: arvind@nmlindia.org. Dr. Arvind Sinha completed his PhD in Materials Science & Technology (School of Materials Science & Technology, IT-BHU) in 1993, under the supervision of Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao
This is a brief report on quiz held at NML Jamshedpur on Nov. 25th 2012, prepared by Dr. Suprabha Nayar, Convenor, Science Quiz.)
__________________________
The third Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao Memorial science–quiz for school students was held on the 25th of November, 2012 at the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory Auditorium. The Quiz was for students of classes 8-10 from all Jharkhand schools. It is worth mentioning that in spite of the day being a public holiday for Muharram and a Sunday, the auditorium was packed with about 430 participants.
After the written round comprising of 25 questions that covered almost all aspects of science, the children watched a brilliant movie on the life and scientific achievements of Nicola Tesla (a copy of the movie has been mailed to all the schools post the event too) and then lunch. Post-lunch, students were introduced to the life and philosophy of late Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao by his student Dr. Arvind Sinha, followed by a very practical down to earth lecture on Stress Management by Prof. H. S. Ray and then the results of the written round was declared. The Quiz Master was Chennai based Mr. V. V. Ramanan, resident quizmaster of the newspaper ‘The Hindu’, same as for 2011 quiz, but he had a completely new format of bounce and pounce for all the rounds. It really kept the participants and the audience on their toes. It must be mentioned that there were interesting questions and gifts for the audience too.
Of the 50 schools who participated from all over the state, the winning team was from Little Flower School, Telco, Jamshedpur and all the three participants received a cash prize of Rs. 5000/- each as well as the Winner’s trophy for the school (the design of which was frozen in the year 2011). The runner’s up team was from Kerala Samajam Model School, Sakchi, and Jamshedpur which also won a cash prize of Rs 3000 /- for each member along with the Runner’s–up trophy. The other schools to reach the finals on stage were JH Tarapore, Dhatkidih, Jamshedpur, DBMS English School, Kadma, Jamshedpur, JVM, Shyamli, Ranchi and Surendranath Centenary School, Ranchi.
This is the third consecutive time that Mrs. Sudha Rao, spouse of Prof. Rao, has been gracing the occasion and this makes the event really special to the organisers. Director, NML not only presided over the function but also spent the whole day with the young children. The event was photographed and videographed by the local press and Doordarshan.

Buck Gee and Vish Mishra: Silicon Valley and our Asian-American advantage
By Buck Gee and Vish Mishra

Buck Gee at a 2011 event of the Advanced Leadership Program for... (Dai Sugano, Mercury News)
Archimedes was right. You can move worlds.
As the ancient Greek engineer observed, all you need is a place to stand and the advantage of leverage.
Our Asian-American workforce has grown to 50 percent of high-tech jobholders from 39 percent in 2000, as recently reported by the Mercury News. Yet in Silicon Valley's 25 largest companies, only 12 percent of the executive leaders and 8 percent of board members are Asian-Americans, a situation that has not substantially changed in the past decade.
As Silicon Valley veterans with over 70 combined years of experience in leadership in the tech and venture capital industry, we see leverage as the key to tapping into the underutilized potential in the Asian-American community to generate innovation, boost the Bay Area economy, and confirm the region's leadership in the global marketplace.
Asian-American leaders have always occupied a prominent place in the legend of Silicon Valley, with people such as Vinod Khosla cofounding Sun Microsystems to create the technical workstation market, Koichi Nishimura growing Solectron into a global manufacturing powerhouse, and Albert Yu leading Intel's microprocessors to market leadership. Today, we have Vidia's Jen-Hsun Huang, Adobe's Shantanu Narayen and SanDisk's Sanjay Mehrotra as successful CEOs.
Lost in this narrative, however, is the simple fact that they have been the exceptions to the rule.
But why? A combination of culture and chemistry?
It is not because Asian-Americans do not aspire to executive roles. On the contrary, Asian-Americans are more ambitious than their peers in seeking leadership roles, as reported in a 2011 survey published by the Center for Work-Life Policy.
We believe that the key reason few Asian-Americans become Silicon Valley executives is that many bring a cultural background and a focus on individual achievement that leaves blind spots in their understanding of organizational leadership, especially with soft skills and business vision. We have witnessed this in the reactions of participants in a unique advanced leadership program for Asian-American executives at the Stanford Business School, a partnership with ASCEND and Asia Society that we helped initiate three years ago. To paraphrase an Intel engineering director's closing feedback last August, it helped him go from "unknowing to awareness in six days."
But we worry that there is a different narrative in the community. In a 2009 survey, 71 percent of Asian-Americans polled felt that they were disadvantaged in workplace promotions. This has not significantly changed since 1993, when another study found that 80 percent of Asian-Americans in Silicon Valley thought that a glass ceiling existed.
While these feelings persist among Asian-American professionals, we believe there is also a question around "chemistry" at the workplace, a chemistry that is rooted in their cultural upbringing. The Asian culture promotes individual excellence and leadership by mastering hard sciences, such as math, physics, biology, engineering, medicine, gymnastics or music. But when it comes to executive leadership, where people skills matter more than anything else, there is lack of mastery of social and organizational sciences. This is where chemistry matters more. And for leadership roles, soft sciences, which tend to enhance soft skills, such as interpersonal relations, teamwork, cooperation, motivation, compromise, negotiations, etc., are crucial.
This combination of culture and chemistry could give rise to significant business implications. A few years ago, one of us was asked to reassure an engineering team of a newly acquired group in China because team members were considering quitting when they found few corporate executives were of Asian descent. As they observe the growing economies in India and China, many valley tech professionals now see limits to their career growth in the U.S. and are returning to their home countries -- moving economic growth, innovation and jobs out of America.
With an Asian-American majority in the high-tech workforce, the question of unfulfilled ambition and underlying discontent is an unsettling issue in Silicon Valley's future.
What can be done?
Silicon Valley businesses thrive on their ability to attract and retain the best talents from every culture. We believe that the top leadership in Silicon Valley is culture- and color-blind and could be more aware that there is a pool of ambitious individuals in their firms to tap into for executive leadership roles.
We see middle management replete with Asian-Americans who are recognized and well compensated for making outstanding contributions to the organization. Today's picture in the middle ranks has much improved since 1993, when an estimated 6 percent of Silicon Valley managers were Asian-American. We also see many excellent management training courses offered in-house and many mentoring/professional development programs from external professional groups, including groups we support as active board members (TiE and Ascend).
Nevertheless, despite the efforts of those programs, we continue to see few Asian-Americans reaching the higher executive levels.
What's missing? Leverage.
We suggest that the missing piece in this puzzle is the leverage that can only be applied from within the corporate walls to recognize the scarcity of Asian-American executives, identify talent for the internal high-potential pipeline, and develop requisite organizational leadership skills.
Missing has been internal executive awareness of the leadership gap. We have found that most Bay Area executives, even those leading HR and diversity teams, are surprised with the data when we raise the question with them. But their subsequent comments are always supportive, with the discussion leading to what internal data can be reviewed and what can be done. So top-level visibility and support is paramount.
Also missing have been internal priorities. Although there are a plethora of Asian-American diversity programs and employee resource groups, few are actually organized or funded to address leadership development, the most relevant issue for Asian-Americans in the workplace. Each company needs to define an action plan to address those issues, work to identify potential Asian-American leadership talent, and fund appropriate training within the context of its internal leadership development pipeline.
Finally missing inside many companies has been the active engagement of the Asian-American community, especially its executive leadership. We leaders have been successful because we have focused on solving challenging business problems and growing shareholder value in transforming our companies into world-class leaders in global markets. It's time for us to recognize our additional corporate responsibility and start proactively leading our internal communities to change because, unfortunately, this issue will not go away if we merely lend our passive support. It's also time for the community to demonstrate that you care enough to learn because we have seen that Silicon Valley leadership cares enough to listen.
We already have a world of talent in our Asian-American community. We also have a special place that fuels innovation and growth for our country.
Now all we need is more leverage, greater ambition and drive.

THE CONNECTOR
Vish Mishra is go-to guy for Indian, valley entrepreneurs
After 30 years on the high-tech scene, Vish Mishra, 64, could be forgiven for throttling back a bit.
Instead, Mishra seems to be accelerating, a whirlwind of activity that has him traveling, speaking and advising startups and entrepreneurs.
Officially, he's a partner at Clearstone Venture Partners. But what keeps him on the go these days is his role as president of TiE Silicon Valley, the largest and original chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs. Mishra was one of the founding members of TiE, which was started in 1992 by a group of Indian professionals in Silicon Valley to create community and better networking opportunities. But its reach has expanded well beyond the Indian community to be a major resource for entrepreneurs across Silicon Valley.
"TiE is not just for the Indian community," Mishra said. "There's only one vision. It is purely about business entrepreneurship."
TiE helps startups through year-round training programs and networking events. Among the main events is the annual TiE conference. And if you've never attended one, then you've missed one of the truly awesome gatherings of entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley.
Mishra's term as president began this year and runs through 2012. In that position, he serves as one of the main hosts and organizers of the annual confab, which drew 3,600 people last May. Though the event draws people from beyond the Indian community, it's also an unmistakable reminder of the prominence of Indians in Silicon Valley.
Through his work at TiE, Mishra shares the wealth of lessons he's learned after being a CEO of four startups and a director on countless others.
"My passion is just to help others," Mishra said. "My knowledge, I'm not going to take it back with me. If I can lift up someone else's life, then that's great."

Executive Management Changes Follow Closing of Series C Round for Power Electronics Innovator
Press Release: Green Plug – Mon, Jan 7, 2013 6:08 AM EST
Green Plug Appoints Kevin Jones to New Post of Chief Scientist, Names Rajeev Prasad VP of Engineering
SAN RAMON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Green Plug (www.greenplug.com), the first company to bring fully programmable mixed-signal controllers to the high volume AC-DC power converter market, today named longtime executive Kevin Jones to the newly-created position of Chief Scientist and appointed semiconductor industry veteran Rajeev Prasad to succeed Jones as VP of Engineering.

(Rajeev prasad)
Prasad and the Green Plug management team will be on hand during 2013 International CES, at the company’s suite at the Platinum Hotel (211 E. Flamingo Road, 702/365-5000).
The appointments mark the next phase of Green Plug’s growth, as the company focuses on executing contracts with strategic partners and shaping the future of innovative programmable power control in a number of related fields. The announcement follows on the heels of Green Plug’s Series C investment round, from U.K.-based strategic investor Imagination Technologies Group plc (LSE: IMG), joined by longtime institutional investors Herald Ventures and Killik & Co., both of London; and Peninsula Ventures of Redwood City, Calif.
Jones, who joined Green Plug as VP of Engineering in early 2008, has nearly 30 years’ experience in building and validating complex hardware and software systems. “Kevin’s breadth of knowledge, his ability to think outside the box and his versatility in working with all kinds of technologies make him absolutely ideal for the Chief Scientist position,” said Frank Paniagua, Jr., Green Plug CEO. “Kevin has enabled Green Plug to focus our technology on a critically needed area in AC-DC power conversion -- the use of fully programmable controllers for high volume, low-cost applications. Developing programmable control in specific markets is a genuine innovation.” Jones earned a Ph.D. in Computing Science from the University of Manchester, a M.Sc. in Computation from Oxford University and a B.Sc. from Reading.
Prasad has more than 20 years of engineering and management experience at delivering successful energy-efficient products in wireless, PC, embedded and consumer electronics. “Rajeev excels at delivering, at getting designs out the door, and brings to Green Plug strong connections with the semiconductor industry,” Paniagua said. “Under his leadership, Green Plug Engineering will continue to innovate in AC-DC power conversion, cost reduction in the lower-power device market, integration of higher switching frequency technologies like GaN and SiC, additional non-linear software algorithms, and more. With Rajeev’s guidance, Green Plug will pursue novel approaches to achieve further energy savings, and will continue to make real advances in communication technologies and their use in the power market.”
Prasad began his career at Intel, where he designed numerous 486 and Pentium-based chipsets during a six-year period. He holds an executive MBA in marketing and finance from University of California, Davis, M.S. in electrical and computer engineering from University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from IIT-BHU, India.
About Green Plug
Green Plug (www.GreenPlug.com) develops and licenses innovative technology that enables consumer electronics manufacturers to upgrade from traditional analog-controlled power adapters to “smart” digitally controlled systems that save power and dramatically speed product design and development. Green Plug is the first company to offer real-time programmable control for multiple control algorithms in a single-chip package at a cost-neutral price point, thus eliminating the major barrier to adoption in consumer AC-DC power converters. The company’s patented mixed-signal technology provides unprecedented flexibility in design through software programming and also enables communication between electronic devices and their power sources – an important precursor to developing power products that leverage the Smart Grid. Founded in 2006, Green Plug is privately held and headquartered in San Ramon, Calif.
