Talking to reporters on Monday, IIT-BHU director Rajeev Sangal said that students who took admission in 2006-2007 onwards would get their degrees. All the degrees will have the new graphic logo and logo type of the institute, Sangal added.

The convocation was the much-awaited event for the institute as the graduates who passed out in 2010, 2011 and 2012 did not receive degrees because IIT status was awaited, which was received in 2012.

It may be noted that traditional dhoti kurta and sarees would replace the colonial academic gowns and caps in the convocation ceremony.

More than 2,300 graduates would receive degrees. As many as 1,288 degrees of B. Tech/B. Pharm, 649 degrees of M. Tech/M. Pharma, 287 degrees of integrated dual degree programme and 159 PhD degrees would be distributed. As many as 113 graduates from all three years would receive gold medals.

IIT-BHU director said that a convocation ceremony for 2013 batch would be held in the October.

c) Kalam highlights importance of research culture

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-newdelhi/kalam-highlights-importance-of-research-culture/article4903354.ece

Allahabad, July 11, 2013

“Think out of box,” former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam advised students on Wednesday, while pointing out the importance of a research culture in Indian institutes.

“You will be remembered for creating that one page in the history of the nation--whether that page of invention, innovation or discovery or creating societal change or removing poverty or fighting injustice or planning and executing mission of networking of rivers”.

Dr. Kalam was addressing students on the “Convergence of Technologies for Rural Transformation” at the first convocation ceremony of Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University.

The convocation was much-awaited as graduates, who passed out in 2010, 2011 and 2012, did not receive degrees because the institute’s IIT status was still awaited then.

More than 2,300 students who were admitted in 2006-07 onwards received degrees at the ceremony while 113 graduates from all three years received gold medals.

Pointing out the importance of Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) in creating sustainable enterprise models at rural levels, Dr. Kalam suggested that IIT-BHU could implement one such complex covering around 50 to 100 villages on the outskirts of Varanasi.

“This PURA will be called IIT (BHU) PURA, which will empower local villages in this region and facilitate faculty and students an intensive programme in societal transformation entrepreneurship,” he said.

Dress code

The convocation ceremony also stood out for its dress code as the traditional black gown and cap were scrapped in favour of kurta pyjamas, sarees and dhotis .IIT-BHU director Rajeev Sangal listed “comfort, aesthetics and beyond” as the reasons for the change.

“It is a relief to wear the comfortable kurta pyjama. In the gown and cap we just sweat...Can we have a proud and strong nation, if people have such a complex regarding their own dress, and own customs?” he asked.
