A proposed plan for a new proposed BPO project- by Raghav Wahi (Meta 2007)

Purpose/aim/business of the new start-up:

To explore , first as summer interns at a multi-national BPO company at Gurgaon, the profitability of the concept and to see whether there is a market for this concept and then either sell the idea, or go forward with a business.

I'm looking for people to join me in setting up a new Knowledge based processing outfit. This is being done in conjunction with a multi-national BPO unit located in Gurgaon. The company has taken a strong interest in the same and I have had preliminary discussions with them about the work that is to be done.

Organizational structure and Business plan:

A company Board consisting of five prominent industrialists/CEOs from reputed industries is in the process of formation. All the members have given the consent to join the Board.

The concept of a new Knowledge Process Outsourcing Industry:

A.Generic Data Searches:

1)Today is the information age .Apart from the relevant information that is required over the course of any activity; you must have noticed a lot of useless information or Noise that accompanies the important data. These needlessly clutter up the decision making process at hand and thus delay it, by increasing the inefficiency of the process. This occurs when the persons mind is diverted to the irrelevant, at the cost of the relevant.

Hence, the question arises: while searching for the important, why fill up your mind with useless bits of information? This process of sorting out the relevant from the irrelevant, the important from the unimportant, can be easily done by somebody else. Just as one rises up the 'Work value chain' , doing the more important things while leaving the smaller, subsidiary details to others, one also rises in the 'Information Value chain' . Thus, to do that, one has to outsource his data/information needs and info searches (on the internet and from social networks) to people who are expert at them. This is where we come in. We shall setup an office to service this very need.

2) Every business has its own information needs. They might be general, or specific. In fact, the decisions are best made 'Blink', but it is in getting to know all the options that take all the work. This is what requires the data agglomeration to be done. Each executive tells his/her subordinates to get the info on various things that they do. If that's the case, why outsource to us? Coz we're the specialists, we have the expertise to do this work quickly, efficiently, and with a greater turnaround time.

Thus, we need to first and fore mostly, identify the data needs of a typical executive, and identify the ways in which we can help him to enhance his productivity by increasing the efficacy of his data gathering ability.

(The above is the first step of the project; to find out the exact information need of an average executive. Thus we'll know as to what data-requirement calls we should expect in the second step of the plan.)

The second step is to have 3 people with PCs and hotlines with them to sit in an office and receive phone calls about the data needs from executives. They then do the Google searches, search their existing database, and make a few calls to sources, and agglomerate all of the relevant, sorted knowledge, into a Microsoft Word file to send back to the executive who asked for the information. We shall also make a Tree structure having a summary of 'the agglomerated data' along with the complete information file , for the executive to have an overview of 'the agglomerated data' (Henceforth, 'Agdata' ).

B. Intra company networking:

1) 'Business Orkut' and instant messaging and Voice over Internet clients:
Suppose you're Mr. Sharma, sitting in General electrics Delhi office, and you want to find a specific piece of information from a guy sitting in your New York General Electric office. Now you know only Mr. Maguire in the New York office. He's not the guy who knows what you want, it’s actually Mr. Wright. He has Mr. Feynman and Mr. Weinstein above him and Mr. Maguire on top of them both. So, it'd take an average of 3 or 4 phone calls to actually get the correct info, and also disturb the routines of 3 guys in the process. Let us apply the Orkut principle to this. You have a site in which everyone has a profile listing their interests, abilities and areas expertise. Thus, when we require something specific, we go onto Business Orkut and then contact only the relevant people. There are already such sites in existence, such as Open BC and Ryze.

2) Thus, we should get a custom made SuperIM-Business networking (Business Orkut) site for the multi-national company. This shall enhance the on time and on the dot forays/ contacting by the multi-national employees for information. The calls can thus be made cheaply and easily to any person around the globe, on the multi-national company’s ne
