Will IT-BHU be converted to IIT? If so, When?
Yes, and very soon. According to the details being updated at this page, we are hopeful that the conversion will happen in the monsoon session in 2010 [July-August].

Will I get an IIT degree if the conversion happens after I join?
Yes. The degree is given in the name used at the time of graduation.

A survey has ranked the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as the number one university in the country. The varsity was established in 1916 by great visionary Madan Mohan Malviya. In the survey, the BHU was adjudged better than Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), University of Delhi, University of Calcutta and other prestigious universities on a number of parameters.

Sad demise of Prof. B. B. Bansal

With extreme grief, we have to announce the sad demise of Prof. B B Bansal. He died today (Monday) morning after a long illness. For the past one month, he was ill and stayed at home. He was professor at dept. of Mechanical Engineering. During his 40 yrs career at our institute, he was also head of the Mechanical Engineering department and TPO (Training & Placement Officer).

Paving the way for creation of a new IIT in Varanasi, the Finance Ministry today gave the go- ahead to a proposal to convert Institute of Technology of Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) to an IIT.

The Expenditure Finance Committee under the Ministry cleared the HRD Ministry's proposal to provide additional Rs 238 crore grant to IT-BHU in the next three years. Now the matter will now go to the Cabinet for consideration.

We are sad to announce the demise of Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao. He died on Jan 10 at Coimbatore due to a heart attack. He was 67 year old. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Prof. P. Ramachandra Rao was a world renowned metallurgist. He had unique distinction of the only Vice-Chancellor (2002-05) of Banaras Hindu University who was also a student (1963-68) and faculty (1964-92) at the university.
